Could I ask 5, 19, and 20 from the Temeraire ask game?

5. A character you hate

For a while I thought "you know, i don't actually hate anyone I think" but then, then I remembered Ning. Lung Tien Ning is, in my humble opinion, the most irritating character in the whole series. Thank god she's only in one book. I think what sets her apart from other characters I really don't like is how she waits to see who will win before picking sides. That must be it because a lot of things that are frustrating about her and also present in Iskierka but at least Iski picks a goddamn side.

Yeah, I really dislike Yongxing, I love to hate Rankin, but man, Ning gets to me on a whole new level.

19. Least favourite scene in the series

Oh this is hard, one scene I can think of of the bad is in book 5 when all the French dragons are being shot down. That scene was very sad and hurt my heart a little. So, I don't know if it counts as "least favorite" but it definitely sprang to mind for a scene that I don't love.

20. Your favourite Dragon breed

Maaaaaaaaan you can't ask me to choose only one! 😖 While I love many many breeds and my favorite changes on my whims, but I will say the Yellow Reapers have consistently been the focus of my love and affection. I just love them so so so so much! They are hearty and caring and thrive under any condition. They have pure little hearts and love company. They are the glue in the formations they're in, they can turn a company of dragons flying together into a group of friends! Anyway, Yellow Reapers are very near and dear to my heart, maybe even more so because they are viewed as common and unimportant.

16. Your favourite headcanon

oh boy now that's opening Pandora's Box isn't it? I have many many headcanons, all of which are beholden to my petty desires and flashes of fancy. Which is to say what is my favorite headcanon today may not be my favorite tomorrow. I think one I am particularly enjoying at the moment is that Regal Coppers lose their vibrant colors with age, while across the channel their counterparts the Grand Chevaliers shift from brown and grey to dusty pink and rose gold in their twilight years. Some Grand Chevaliers will even gain tints of lavender, lilac, or baby blue to their scales. So basically when the magnificent colors of a Regal begin to fade, the radiance of the Grand Chevalier is only just making itself seen.

27. What do you tell your friends when recommending Temeraire books to them?

Well, the only person who listened to Temeraire on my recommendation is my sister, and that was result of me talking about it to her non-stop for over a year. But idk, for someone else I guess I would say how it has an interesting take on dragon and human interaction and how the differs around the world. And idk say something about how cool it was the Laurence (who's already a good man at the start of it) has his own "redemption arc" into a better man. Or I might say how it's super fun and if you love dragons and want a good time go ahead and give His Majesty's Dragon a shot ahah.

Tenzing Tharkay. Sometimes I wonder why I still read the books he doesn’t appear in.

11. Something you would change in the series

The portrayal of the United States of America. To me it’s just too perfect. I mean, in EoI it is said how incredibly difficult it is to establish/hold a colony against tons of enemy dragons. The Native Americans do have tons of dragons. So why, after some decades of being slaughtered - as it happened in Africa - didn’t some tribes group together and threw those stupid white people out, as it happened in Africa? Why did they instead decide to work with the whites and form a country that by 1810 already goes from east coast to west coast (if I remember correctly)? How did that happen?

I don’t have one. There is only one place for an OTP in my heart and that is already eternally assigned. I do ship a lot of them, though. Laurence/Jane, Granby/Little, Laurence/Tharkay(/Granby)... whatever the canon/fandom comes up with.

Tharkay delivering his dowry a.k.a. ‘Oh, look, I happened to pass by some twenty dragons so I decided to bring them to you, no big deal.‘

Yes, I know, I’m a little bit behind the schedule, so I’ll do two every day for some days to catch up. I have an excuse, too: I couldn’t think of a favourite scene for ToJ...

6. Your favourite moment in Throne of Jade

... because it’s my least favourite book in the series. The voyage to China takes FOREVER, and what happens in China... well, too much talking, not enough action/fun.

So my favourite scene is the Great Shopping Adventure, closely followed by the Hun-Hun attack.

7. If you were in Temeraire universe, you would be…

Perscitia’s Captain! Like her I rather watch fights from a safe distance. Unlike her I’m not a math genius, so I’d spend all my time admiring her ability for algebra and her casual cleverness and forcing other people to acknowledge her intelligence.

5. A character you hate

At the current point of the series there isn’t really a character I hate. Rankin’s just not worth the effort and I can at least understand Lien’s feelings.

But until Crucible of Gold there is Iskierka.

I was SO EXCITED about the Kazilik egg and then she hatched and immediately turned out to be a danger to everyone around her. Granby is one of my favourite characters and I wanted him to get a nice dragon. Instead he got a dragon who:

was thankfully mostly asleep throughout much of her out-of-shell time in BPW but nevertheless managed to be annoying (like almost burning others or the “This is my cow”-incident)

forced her captain to wear the most ridiculous outfits in EoI

disobeyed orders in battle whereby other dragons got wounded, also got herself AND her captain captured because she wanted to earn more glory and prize money (VoE)

shipped herself to Australia to get an egg from Temeraire, but continued to bother and insult him (ToS)

in CoG without telling anyone tried to marry her captain off to the Inkan Empress FOR GOLD (and because Temeraire rejected her?), I mean WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, ISKIERKA, YOU KNEW GRANBY WAS GAY! YOU KNEW HE WOULD BE UNHAPPY AND YOU DIDN’T EVEN ASK FOR HIS OPINION! ARGH. And then she took the whale that had been caught their whole group and sold it on her own to buy Granby a FUCKING GOLDEN HOOK as if he’d ever wanted the stuff she threw on him. Luckily she got better after his refusal to wear it but I’m not sad that she’s not in BoT, not in the slightest.
