Rob: This episode deepens the mystery of Dean’s time in Purgatory. How did you decide what to reveal here? Especially about his loyalty to Castiel? Was that storyline mapped out or was it something coming together as episodes progressed? Andrew Dabb: It was something we really focused a lot on the first 2 weeks when we were in a room. Honestly at that point probably more- ‘Cause, I think, again we kind of know what a reunion between Sam and Dean is gonna look like. We don’t know the particulars but we know the shape of it. We kind of know what world we are walking back into. Purgatory was a complete blank slate for us. So what was it gonna look like? Obviously it can’t look too crazy because we don't have that much money. And so a lot of a time we spent- I mean at one point we went big and Dean was gonna be some kind of weird Road Warrior type monster ia a post apocalyptic landscape. But then we go ‘Oh, we can’t afford that.’ So we just put them in the woods. So we spent a lot of time mapping that out. Purgatory’s storyline was essentially broken, written in the room on its own. At least the major steps of it. Rich: And then you broke it up into flashbacks? Andrew Dabb: Exactly. So we knew this episode we were responsible for X, Y and Z flashbacks. Where normally when you’re going into an episode, you don’t have that much going into it, when you’re breaking it on your own. You have ideas and goals but that one Jeremy and Bob really focused on breaking a version of in a room early on, because it was such an unknown for us.
