3DMG Blade(Not Grip) Tutorial

A tutorial on how to get super shiny blades for your 3DMG(or any sword for that matter!) without using spray paint!

With expensive metallic spray paints vs tin foil method:

What you'll need:

Already cut out blade(mine is wood, it can be anything as long as it can take a little bit of stress)

Super glue

^ This is the best super glue I've found so far. Great control in flow and glues two very different surfaces together really easily.

Something small with a flat surface on the bottom

Tin foil, I recommend heavy duty and a well known brand name

Table or other flat surface

A pair of scissors

The first step is to get a strip of tin foil long enough for your blade, unless you want it to show, I don't recommend having it in different pieces. Once you have it, take the tin foil and take that small object(I used the container of super glue) and rub it smooth against the blade, getting a general outline for how much you'll need.

Cut off excess, don't make it perfect, leave extra in case you need it.

It should look something like this once you're done. 

Now, take your glue, lift it up just slightly enough to get the glue underneath without moving everything too much. With it smoothed out(mostly) you don't want to end up gluing it down in a weird spot. 

Like this, I started at the bottom and moved up the blade.

Don't use too much glue, and once you put the tin foil back down, take the object and rub it flatter, on the tougher spots try rubbing down in a different direction. Just be careful not to tear it.

Once that's all glued, trim the edges so there isn't much hanging over. What is, just fold it tightly to the edges. Repeat on the other side.

You'll get something like this:

The next step is to get the effect of the lines going through it or a blade's edge, you can use the other side of the tin foil.

For my 3DMG I cut very thin strips of the foil:

Use the side that's less shiny, and for this I use craft glue(Elmer's) because I don't really fancy gluing my fingers together trying to get it to stick. 

Decide what angle you want and how far apart, I did mine about 4 1/2 inches apart.

Just take the glue, rub it all down where you're going to glue it, and place the strip down, and use a thin object(I used the scissors) and rubbed it flat.

The purple glue dries clear, so no need to worry. Repeat this all down the blade until you've completely it on both sides and down until there not enough room for another.

Once it's done, mine looked like this!

The process takes about 1-2 hours for each blade, but it's worth it.

Your 3D Movement Gear posts are not only inspiring but will help me quite a bit with my own build. Are there any dimensions you could share for the propulsion device? That part is killing me. I would appreciate it more than you can imagine ^-^

Always glad to be of help to others who are attempting their own builds! The propulsion device is definitely one of the most difficult parts to work out, so I’ve composed a little diagram of my dimensions for you: 

Keep in mind that these are approximate, and that I feel mine is a little off scale wise, but it’s a place to start. Hope it helps!

3DMG tutorial short thingy!

I drew out the patterns for the blades on my plywood. I used the foam board blade to trace, just not adding the too tiny pieces or a lot of the details. It'll need sanded for the finer details.

Ten bucks for it! The blade is about 22 inches, plus 7 inches for the handles.

Then i started on opening my paper clay for covering the exposed sides of the foam board and filling gaps. For the work I had toothpicks, a bowl of water and a butter knife. Although I didn't end up using the knife.

I rolled out small pieces with my fingers and sculpted it messily onto the edges. It sure does look better so far! Lol.

I cut a long piece and glued it to the top of the box, then glued two small pieces of foam together, for this part:

I took my two water bottles and cut the craft foam just right, then attached it to them. Then I cut a small piece of foam, two long strips of craft foam and glued them to a kid's glue stick. Then glued the stick to the bottle top. Voila!

I'll be covering the rest of the exposed foam, cutting the blades, then it'll be onto gluing. I'll probably take a lot of explanation pictures for that step. Then I might not put anything else out until after Colossalcon. I'll be compiling a big, better tutorial for the gear all together after.

The gas can isn't glued FYI, that's why it's crooked xD
