I just —" that grin gentles into something softer, as does his playful grip. "Wanted to say thanks. For making him happy." It's more than any of them ever managed.

jade is still unsure what to make of rielle’s brothers — the ones he’s met, at least, and he knows he hasn’t met all of them. russel is one he has met a time or two so far, is particularly vexing. some parts of him seem almost familiar to jade, although they seem less deliberate on russel’s part ( or at least not the same type of deliberate ).

but that’s hardly the point when russel throws an arm around his shoulder despite the height difference between them and jade lets himself be pulled down a bit in that direction. the words catch him off - guard, and his usually serene and unreadable expression falters into something more open than he usually allows. “ there’s nothing to thank me for, ” he replies, and this isn’t his weaponized false modesty.

“ this isn’t one - sided. he makes me just as happy. ” the words are sincere but short — he isn’t used to speaking so candidly about his emotions, so he keeps himself carefully in check.
