After a rather lacklustre 4th episode, Dororo is back in full force for its fifth one. Rather than introducing us to the focus character for the episode almost immediately, we’re given a bit of time with Dororo and later the Priest trying to help Hyakkimaru out after he’s been overwhelmed by his new sensation of hearing, and then the focus character is naturally introduced as a singing voice that Hyakkimaru is drawn to. And she’s a friendly young lady who works for the local soldiers in order to earn money and feed a group of crippled orphans she’s gathered. Immediately a more interesting concept than “hungry sword” and it’s also just much better paced. Perhaps because this mini-arc will probably be 2 episodes (this was part 1 after all) but the pacing in this episode was just pretty good, letting most of the exposition come through in character actions and stuff and stuff. For example, when old priest dude finds a building he thinks would be super safe for the lady and her orphans to move into other than the Demon occupying it, she vows to work even harder as well as do work for the other army too, and Dororo, worried for her safety, follows her only to see her prostituting herself. It’s like, this is a neat plot twist that the episode hinted at but only made explicitly clear when it was actually witnessed by Dororo himself. Hyakkimaru, eager to help the lady, also runs out to kill the aforementioned Demon, only to lose his leg (like, a flesh and blood leg) due to fighting while ignoring his earlier injuries, so actions have consequences and stuff. He did get his voice back though, and with how quickly his hearing has picked up on Japanese, I wonder how long before we see him talking.
