I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Genius and asking him 4 simple questions. He is a creative genius and a jack of all trades. he creates music, art, and has his own brand called A.R.T.S. Museum, which stands for Always Remember To Smile. In these tough times that we are facing, Matt Genius hopes to inspire and remind us to smile and spread love regardless of the hate and anger and racism that others may try to infect us with. I captured his response through pictures. check out the interview below: iLilyRose: What is your deepest desire? Matt Genius: To be loved. iLilyRose: By whom? Matt Genius: By everyone. iLilyRose: What makes you smile? Matt Genius: Inspiring people. When I see people do things because I inspired them. That really makes me smile, really makes me feel fulfilled. iLilyRose: What/whom do you truly trust? Matt Genius: I trust creativity. iLilyRose: What is your gift to the world? Matt Genius: My overcoming adversity, my story. I think it inspires people to do what they want no matter what the circumstances are. I think my brand is also a great gift to the world because the world doesn't really have positivity like that right now.
4 Questions with D-Tension
Q: You recently announced your new album “The Violence of Zen”. How did you come up with that name?
Zen is a state that I cannot achieve until I have removed all darkness from within myself and from my immediate surroundings. The past two years have been the most difficult of my adult life. I’ve had to reevaluate some friend ships, business partnerships and other relationships that were bringing me down. In order to achieve Zen, the state of meditation and insight that will allow my energy to benefit myself and more importantly those who I come into contact with, I had to extract all of this darkness from my life. Violence! The record is largely me being honest with myself about myself and crushing the things about me that I don’t like. I can be my own worst enemy sometimes. Violence! The album hasn’t come out yet but the figurative death of the infidels that I once called friends has already begun. Now I’ve got an amazing job, a part in a Hollywood film, recorded a new album and got back to working on the FM dial. I converted his false flag friendship, converted it into positive energy and now I am back with a calm vengeance that will frustrate the hell out of my enemies while it also pays my bills. Violence! I just rented a lake house on lake winnipesaukee. I’ll be fishing for trout for dinner this summer. ZEN!
Q: Any special features fans should be looking forward to?
A: Diamond D, Tash of The Alkaholiks, Pace Won, Big Ben Hillman, Effect and at least three others that aren’t recorded yet but will be in the next week or two.
Q: What is your observation on how Independant hip hop has changed over the past few years?
A: The more things change the more they stay the same. It’s mostly shitty artists with a beat program and a mic. Juts add water, instant rappers. There are some stellar acts as well. Nothing about it has changed. I saw this article about “why Boston hip hop doesn’t blow up.” and I realized that someone writes that same article every year for the past 20 years. Same old shit. Limited venues, limited press, limited radio, limited talent. I still get my point across with humor. Not much has changed. Two things have changed that I can say for sure. 1. I don’t give a fuck about being all up in the game and booking shows and helping people “get on”. I did enough of that for a lifetime and there is very little “thank you” or returning of favors out there. I appreciate those who are dope. I appreciate those who appreciate me. 2. I’ve stepped up my game. I’m 45 and I am a better artist now than I have ever been.
Q: Will your puppet make an appearance in an upcoming video? A: I generally don’t use the same trick over and over. I doubt the puppet comes back. Then again the Santa suit will be in my next video. You never know!
4 Questions with Weapon E.S.P.
Q: As an artist, how do you feel like you have grown in the past 3 years?
A: Over the past 3 years I have grown as an emcee due to the fact that I was so hungry and taking every opportunity I was offered to be heard. I would take any show whether there was a packed house or 5 people. I was also traveling to all areas of the North East to do shows and have my music reach more ears. After the drop of my debut in 2014,I chose to take more time on my newer material and met and built with a larger variety of beat-makers and this has improved my sound. My ability to rock a crowd has improved because of the 100's of shows I've done in recent years. I bumped into Mass Acre Music group emcees Time and Lepp while we were both opening for Termanology and Edo G at the Electric Haze in Worcester one night and we immediately connected and knew we had to work together. Mass Acre is now my team and it consists of Time, Lepp, illa Truth(producer/Manager) and myself! Together we are grinding and taking bigger and bigger opportunities. I guess you could say the grind to catch recognition is a tough one, but it helps build you and develops you into a beast if your hungry enough. Weapon E.S.P
Q: What new project are you currently working on?
A: I have two projects I am currently working on. My solo album( Weapon E.S.P- Devolution) and my duo project (East Agents) with Aperiod.
Q: Are you planning on any videos for your tracks?
A: Ideally I would like to do a vid for every song, but I am still in the process of narrowing down which ones to do visuals for. I promise it'll be dope and the director I am using is the same from my first video "Tundra", Shane Mclellan.
Q: You take your name from Wolverine aka Weapon X. Talk about your love for the character
A: Ever since I can remember Wolverine was my favorite character because I just feel he is the most badass. Logan is more rugged than the rest in his style, habits, attitude, berserker rage..etc..Most importantly I use Weapon E.S as an alias based off Weapon X, which is when Wolverine was captured and scientists laced his entire skeleton with adamantium, creating a weapon. Wolverine was always a loner, he drinks, smokes and the ladies love him. I am just angry there is a girl Wolverine now haha, but I'm not getting into that.As far as the name goes, I feel my skills on the mic and my hunger has made me a lyrical weapon so I adapted the name. At first the "Weapon" was not an official part of my emcee name, but now it is Weapon E.S.P.
4 Questions with Stiz Grimey
Q: You recently released a single "Maybe" with Evan Black. How happy are you with the response to the video?
A: Im def pretty happy with the Maybe video.. The director Jon Walley did an amazing job, and I feel like it got a great response.. While i wish we were getting more coverage from blogs, and more national press, I take pride in knowing that pretty much anyone whos seen it, fucks wit it.. And s/o my guy Evan Black who did his thing on that record!
Q: Aside from Evan Black and Superstah Snuk, any other features that the fans can look forward to?
A: Locked In The Vault is beats exclusively from J1k's The Vault beat tapes, and features Evan Black, Moroney, Grover, Kam'Geez, Easy Money, n JTronius.. I really reached out to artists who I thought would sound good on the particular beat I was working on.. Super grateful for all of them getting involved.. As well as Shawn Patel and Producers United who are sponsors of the project..
Q: When is the Stiz Grimey tour?
A: Mannn listen! I wish I was touring nationally and internationally ritee the fuvk now!! But as of yet, I havnt had the opportunity to be on a legit tour.. If I had the financial backing, I could get on a tour tomorrow.. I think before you can even think about a step like that tho, you need to have alot of things already established so that youre able to take full advantage of what a tour offers.. I dont wanna tour just for the sake of saying I did.. I want it to be the logical next step in a series of planned movements..
Q: What has working on the WAAF morning show taught you about the radio industry?
A: Its funny, cuz I truly believe everything Ive done prepared me for wat was to come next.. Working at WAAF, I get to use my creativity, studios and protools, marketing etc.. All of these things are skills that Ive been honing with Stiz Grimey.. Ive created these songs, got into studios and recorded them, and then networked and marketed myself to try and get maximum exposure.. And thats what I told Hillman when I interviewed for the job.. Nothing was to small or too big a task.. If someone needed a coffe, I could do that.. And if you needed a rap about how fat Pablo Sandoval is, written and recorded in a half hour, I can do that too.. One thing thats been different tho, is working for a machine.. With the Stiz Grimey brand, Im the boss.. Its me making all the decisions on how content should be created, and how said content should be marketed and released.. With WAAF, Im working for a company that has a Program Director, a General Manager, a team of lawyers.. So the decision isnt mine to make.. I can only present what I feel is best.. But overall its been surreal to land a job on a morning show that I was such a fan of.. Not to mention one of the top morning shows in the market.. And our market in general is nothing to sneeze at.. Ive really just been trying to learn as much as possible from everyone there.. But its so amazing to have a job that I truly love, and where I not only get to explore my creative side, but Im rewarded for doing so..
