Difficult sensations, emotions, etc arise and pass. In practice we build our capacity or what is called distress tolerance by recognizing and letting it be. In the beginning it may be that we are with it for just a breath or a few breaths and over time we grow our capacity to let it be without trying to change or manipulate it. As we do this we discover that there is more space to be with all phenomena. We discover a sound is just a sound. Living according to these words, is a wholesome way of walking through life. We don’t get attached to anything, because we realize that at some point it will be gone. So we hold experience lightly, without becoming identified with what arises. Joy, anger, happiness, sorrow, loss...all experiences that are happening in the moment; a part of life. Not good or bad just experience. Grieving, reacting to A pleasant unpleasant,it’s just what the mind does. So we work towards staying present, and meeting what’s here in a way, where we stay connected to life. This sometimes means we bring compassion towards the difficult, Sometimes it means we shift our attention to something neutral like the breath, to help stabilize the body, mind and heart. This is a practice worth exploring. It shifts our experience so we are more open hearted and open minded. TBT- we have grown up learning to divide the world into categories-good bad, right wrong. There are no categories in nature. What if we could drop the label if only for a minute and see a person, animal etc not as good or bad but just a living being that feels just as I do, wishes to live and connect as I do? On the spiritual path it’s about inclining towards aligning with what is wholesome and healing so we begin to notice the patterned ways we react to pain and start to notice the suffering that follows reactivity. And we bring compassion, understanding and patience as we stay present with what is often pain augmented by stories of future stress or past hurts. We attend and befriend what’s arising in the present and in this way we come back to this wise heart mind.
