She awoke with a start. Blood streaming down her chin. She had bitten off her tongue in the night, and would quite possibly never speak again. She arose from her bed, tossing the sheets to the floor as she rushed to the bathroom to inspect. Opening her mouth was a difficulty, for any movement made the pain throb in waves, her heartbeat rushing to her face.
From behind her there was a scream, as her roommate witnessed the mangled state of her. She too would have screamed if she had seen such a thing in the middle of the night. She tried to calm her roommate, but the girl would hear none of it, shaking her had with her hands over her ears, repeating this isn’t happening this isn’t happening. But, it wasn’t happening. Not to her at least. Her reaction though, dictated that perhaps she was the one who would come out of this more damaged.
She slapped her roommate quick and fast, snapping her out of her stupor, then she grabbed her cellphone and wrote in a text. Calm down, I just bit off my tongue.
Oh, said her roommate as she took a few breaths, hand over her heart, sorry, there’s just so much blood and I--sorry.
She rolled her eyes and went back to cleaning up her face. Disinfecting it was very important, so she did so immediately, swishing coconut oil around her mouth in an attempt to soothe it.
Even so, even after it healed, she would live the rest of her life without forming another word aloud.
