A Closer Look
Asus’s TUF Gaming X3 RX 5700XT comes in a relatively small box with a picture of the card on the front and specs and features on the back. The card itself is almost shrink-wrapped into an origami-folded carrier. Follow the instructions inside on how to extricate the card safely.
Besides the card, you get a thank you note from Asus and a speed setup manual.
The face of the TUF Gaming RX 5700XT has three fans, the center one being just a touch smaller. The main shell is matte black with much of the face having a grey pattern at an angle.
The rear has the same pattern across the backplate. There is an opening right over the GPU die but the plate covers everything else.
A trickle-down of more recent Strix family cards, each PCIe power connection has two LEDs on it to indicate good or bad status. An 8-pin and a 6-pin provide the main power to the TUF card.
The outer edge has the TUF Gaming logo towards the rear of the card, with a low-key milky strip next to it bearing a gentle touch of RGB. You can see from this angle how massive the 2.7-slot cooler really is.
The flip side has your typical PCIe x16 slot, with a rubber cover to protect it during shipping.
On the business end, you have 4 video ports, a single HDMI 2.0b, and a trio of Display Port 1.4. Each is covered with a rubber plug.

In both of our 3D Mark tests, the TUF version of the 5700XT holds a notable lead over the AMD branded 5700XT.
Futuremark VRMark
The performance requirements for VR games are much higher than for typical PC games. So if you’re thinking about buying an HTC Vive or an Oculus Rift, wouldn’t you like to know that your PC is ready for VR?
VRMark includes three VR benchmark tests that run on your monitor, no headset required, or on a connected HMD. At the end of each test, you’ll see whether your PC is VR ready, and if not, how far it falls short.
Orange Room Test – The Orange Room benchmark shows the impressive level of detail that can be achieved on a PC that meets the recommended hardware requirements for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. If your PC passes this test, it’s ready for the two most popular VR systems available today.
Cyan Room Test – Cyan Room is a DirectX 12 benchmark. It features a large, complex scene and many eye-catching effects. Cyan Room shows how using an API with less overhead can help developers deliver impressive VR experiences even on modest PC systems.
Blue Room Test – The Blue Room is a much more demanding test. It’s ideal for benchmarking the latest graphics cards. With its massive 5K rendering resolution and spectacular volumetric lighting effects, the Blue Room sets the bar for future hardware generations.
ASUS’s TUF treatment gives the 5700XT a noticeable performance boost over AMD’s stock design.

A lone professor performs dangerous experiments in an abandoned classroom, day in and day out. Obsessed with inventions and discoveries beyond the wildest dreams, he strives to prove his ideas.
Once you come to this place in the early morning, you would not meet him there. The eerie thing is a loud bang from the laboratory heard a few moments ago. What was that? You have the only chance to cast some light upon this incident by going deeply into the matter of quantum theory: thorough visual inspection of professor’s records and instruments will help to lift the veil on the mystery.
Again, we see ASUS’s TUF Gaming X3 card hold a noticeable lead over the AMD reference model card, and it easily competes with Nvidia’s RTX 2070 cards.
Game Testing & Performance
Ashes of the Singularity
Planet by planet, a war is raging across the galaxy. The technological singularity has given humanity the power to expand further than they ever have before. Now, they compete with each other and their sentient artificial intelligence adversaries for control of newfound worlds.
In Ashes of the Singularity, The TUF Gaming X3 card does nearly as well at 1440p as it does at 1080p.
Far Cry 5
Anything can happen. Everything will.
Welcome to Hope County, Montana, land of the free and the brave, but also home to a fanatical doomsday cult—known as The Project at Eden’s Gate—that is threatening the community’s freedom. Stand up to the cult’s leaders, Joseph Seed, and the Heralds, as you spark the fires of resistance that will liberate the besieged community.
Far Cry 5 is fairly recent and pretty demanding yet the TUF Gaming X3 can pretty much swing 4K and just kills it at 1440p and 1080p.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider Experience Lara Croft’s defining moment as she becomes the Tomb Raider. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will ultimately be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be.
The TUF Gaming X3 does a killer job on the latest Tomb Raider but this is one of the few titles that the 5700 XT Evo falls a few frames behind the AMD reference model.
Metro Exodus Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first-person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created.
Metro Exodus is an incredibly demanding title when cranked up but the TUF Gaming X3 card manages a very playable 40 FPS average at 1080p at maximum settings.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands is the very first military shooter in a massive open world that you can play entirely solo or in four-player co-op.

In Ghost Recon Wildlands we again see that the TUF Gaming X3 5700 XT does nearly as well in 1440p as it does 1080p and provides playable frame rates even at maximum settings.
Overclocking
Starting in the default “gaming mode” we see the TUF Gaming X3 RX 5700XT EVO settle in around 2058MHz with core temps hovering in the mid 60C range, and a supposed power draw of about 175W.
We’ll do our overclocking section with the card shifted into OC mode, which gives us the above steady-state readings from GPUz.
OC mode gives a small but noticeable jump over the stock score of 9456.
One of the next things we like to do is crank the fan up and max out the power target to fully unleash the GPU to do what it thinks it needs to do. ASUS allows a +50% increase to the power limit on the TUF Gaming X3 5700XT.
After running Time Spy again, we see that the card was indeed power limited, and raising the power limit nets a great jump in score to 9882.
We slowly raise the memory in +50Mhz increments to check stability, but quickly run out of slider at +300MHz in GPU Tweak II. This nets us an effective clock speed of 15.2GHz, a decent jump over the stock 14GHz.
Combined with a higher power limit, increasing the memory speed again gets us a noticeable jump in Time Spy score.
The final thing we can do is go after the GPU Core Clock, and we do it in the same fashion as memory, going up in small 10MHz increments, but we again max out the slider before running into instability.
Even though the slider says +50MHz or 2150MHz overall speed, the TUF Gaming X3 settles in at 2105MHz, or about 30MHz higher.
For little more effort than just maxing out all the sliders in GPU Tweak II, we get a cumulative score increase of 672 points or 7.1%. Not too shabby for about 5 seconds worth of work.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
ASUS’s TUF Gaming X3 Radeon RX 5700XT EVO provides great performance with the benefits of an aftermarket design without the more premium cost of the ROG Strix family. At the time of this writing, you can get the TUF Gaming X3 5700XT Evo for as little as $390 online in comparison to the Strix at around $440. This puts it even cheaper than most Nvidia RTX 2070 models, and the 5700XT EVO usually beats it in most of our testing.
The new cooler appears to be effective, even while overclocked to the maximum. The Core temps stayed under 70C, though the VRAM does creep up into the warm but much more acceptable upper 70C range after a period of heavy use. The memory on this EVO model is cooled by the main cooler via thermal pads as well as passively via thick thermal pads to the rear backplate. The original iteration of this card (without the EVO designation) only passively cooled the VRAM, leading to a lot of criticism from the community. ASUS took this feedback and reworked the cooler into the much more capable version we see here.
The Radeon RX 5700XT is a great product from AMD and ASUS has gone the extra mile with the TUF Gaming X3 EVO to make it even better. Great job ASUS!
