In which the wedding happens, all is blissful, and JVJ pulls a disappearing trick.
My best guess for the meal seating plan (other than Hugo Being Symbolic), is that JVJ was meant to be at the head of the table, with Cosette and Marius on either side as the VIPs (and probably Aunt G on Marius's other side, while Grandpa is either next to Cosette or seated at the foot of the table in the other 'host' position). Rationale: the vacant seat is referred to as an armchair, and (in English-language sources) the wedding breakfast is hosted by the bride's parents, making JVJ the de facto host. Gillenormand is her other guardian, which accounts for the location, and his possible place at the other end of the table.
Feeling bad for all the subtle slights to Aunt G.
Gillenormand's sermons really remind me of a less gloomy Grantaire. I'm considering a headcanon that a time-travelling R is Marius' grandfather...
Squicked, as usual, by anything Hugo says regarding virgins. But, at least, he has now once actually followed through when he said he wouldn't talk about something.
Gillenormand uses tu with Basque; Cosette calls JVJ vous.
A little after ten, I got an email from Chris asking if we could meet.
“Where does Chris sit?” I asked.
“I’ll take you,” Izzy said. “I got someone on that floor with a monitor issue, anyway.”
Chris’ office was on the second floor and Izzy guided me all the way. As a matter of fact, she was the one who knocked on the door.
“Come in,” a voice said.
Izzy poked her head in. “Your tech writer is here.”
“Well, have ‘em come in,” the voice drawled.
Chris wasn’t very tall (not as short as Kristi or Angie, though) and had a very firm handshake. “I’m glad to finally meet you. The gals down on the desk think very highly of you.”
“Thank you,” I said, taking a seat. “They’re very good at what they do and they’ve been more than helpful. I couldn’t have done any of this without them.”
“I’m sorry I haven’t been down there,” Chris went on. “We’ve been pretty busy up here getting the details on the schedule change hashed out. They wanted it to start at four AM. That’s when the buses roll out, but the call logs didn’t justify it.”
I nodded.
“I know we asked for a bit more than your initial contract stipulated,” Chris said. “And you’ve done a lot more. The SOP looks great and everyone’s happy with that.”
“Thank you.”
“And you’ve really turned that KB around. I think that may have fueled Sam’s decision to leave us.” Chris pulled up the KB and clicked through it. “I’m really impressed with this client-facing material. That should save us a lot of inquiries. Have you seen the numbers on our calls?”
“I’ve seen some of it: the reports I could generate, at least,” I said. “It looked like ‘general inquiry’ was the biggest driver.” I pointed at the KB on screen. “That’s modeled a bit after what you had with the printer page: install, order, incident. If the users were already used to that, then, this should feel natural to them.”
Chris nodded. “Having the related articles pop up based on incident type is a good move. Not that our people are used to reading.”
I laughed a little. “I’ve seen that.”
“But, we do have some savvy folks here.”
“The liaisons,” I said. “This is the first place I’ve seen with that. When did you initiate it?”
Chris smiled. “A couple years ago. One of Moira’s suggestions when we only had four people on the desk. It’s paid off.”
Honestly, I’d thought it had been longer. It worked so well.
“What are your plans next week?” Chris asked. “Or should I ask, after that?”
“You want me for the three days, is that correct?”
“If you can. Up to you. It would help.”
“But on a 1099,” I said. “So, you’d be paying me directly.”
“Your contracting company can’t get you in here until the fourth,” Chris said. “You’d think if we said we wanted it extended, they’d just extended it, but they want to make this complicated. We’ve got the funding for those three days, but they want some waiting period. We can justify the 1099 because it’s less than a week. Personally, I think it’s because they don’t want to pay any kind of holiday pay.”
“I’m not getting holiday pay anyway,” I said. “You’d have to be on contract at least ninety days before that kicks in. No Thanksgiving, no Christmas, no New Year’s.”
Chris looked at me with pursed lips. “Hum. Something not right about that.”
“Just a matter of timing,” I said. “I’m...used to it.”
“Three holidays,” Chris said. “Three days. We might have to adjust your rate for next week.”
Yes, it would mean more taxes I’d have to pay out-of-pocket, but it would be worth it in the long run if Chris was proposing what I thought. The word ‘might’ kept my hopes in check, but I’d be an idiot to not accept it and Chris knew that. They really wanted this done before year-end and were willing to pay for it.
“When did you decide you wanted to extend the contract?” I asked.
“As you know, Sam’s leaving.”
“Yes.” I nodded. “I got the email on Friday. But, you had told Izzy on Wednesday.”
Chris leaned on the desk with tented fingers. “We look out for each other down here. There are folks who work almost their entire adult life here. But, I think that goes with the territory of what we do, of the entire business model. When you find folks who are willing to help, to go above and beyond what the job requires, that should be recognized. Quite frankly, it would be stupid of me to let you go.”
“Oh,” I said. “Thank you.”
“Well, it’s obvious you’d do well here,” Chris said. “And we’d do well to have you. Sam’s old position has just opened and the req will open on the fourth. We’ll have that out for the month; I was just writing it up and I’ll email you a link. I’m arguing we keep you. It won’t be as much as...next week, but I think we can swing what we were paying your people, plus benefits, of course.”
“Of course.” I nodded.
“Did you have any questions for me?” Chris asked.
This is the question we all dread at the end of an interview. Ones I had always used were “What are your expected goals for this project?” or “When would you like me to start?” (that one usually gets a laugh). A friend tells me hers is “Is this a new position or is it filling a recent opening?” I already knew the answers to all these questions and more. I knew the culture, how the organization operated, and who I’d be working with. But I had to ask something.
I looked around the room. It was a small office, but Chris had placed several framed certificates for marksmanship on one wall. An honest-to-god straight shooter.
“How long have you been shooting?” I asked, pointing at one of the certificates.
Chris laughed. “Started in high-school back in Arizona; a cowboy shooting club. Costumes and everything.”
“That sounds like fun,” I said. It actually did.
“Yeah, it was,” Chris said. “Got to use some old black-powder revolvers. What a noise! More of a poof than a crack, though. The rifles make a nice loud boom. But, got some nice tricks down. I can still hit an ace at good distance.”
“Moira knows some good card tricks,” I said.
“She knows a lot of good tricks in general,” Chris said. “Can’t wait to see what she’ll do in the admin spot. Saw the new hair. Heard you had something to do with that.”
I shook my head. “No, not really. We just talked about it.”
Chris stood and I followed suit. Another firm handshake.
“You’re a good influence,” Chris said. “I hope we can hold on to you.”
Back in the NOC, Gabi was walking through a password reset and Kristi was doing a software install. Both seemed unusually complicated, but I think that came from the caller’s end.
One thing I needed to do was work with the admins about machine collections and automatic software installation. This was something I’d seen the plans for, but it had only been implemented for PDF and Office updates. I knew it wouldn’t be completed by year end, but maybe we could get a good start on it for January. And then…
And if I got the job? I didn’t want to make plans just yet. They might actually find someone with more experience and skill in the next month. Did I really deserve a full-time job?
Sam had been there so long and knew all the ins and outs. That was a brain I was going to have to pick before it left. And would Sam even talk to me about it? If what I’d been able to do had been the biggest motivation for leaving… but that didn’t feel right. Why would Sam leave at year-end unless another position elsewhere had already opened?
I sent a quick email asking for a chance to meet so we could discuss how calls and tickets had been measured in the past. I could probably fit some more questions in during that.
Sam hadn’t replied after fifteen minutes, so must have been at lunch. It was about eleven-thirty, and I decided that was a good time for a break.
There’s quite a few sandwich shops downtown that aren’t underground. The weather was warm enough to go walking. I thought about the chain ‘deli’ that’s next-door to the chain pharmacy, but there was a locally-developed shop across the street: one of those places where you get a checklist, mark off what you want, and then wait.
On my walk there, I noticed a bar with a menu posted in the window. They were open for lunch and the selection and prices looked good, so I figured I’d give them a try.
I grabbed a seat at the bar and the bartender handed me a menu. I already knew what I wanted.
“Can I get you anything to drink?” he asked.
“Just a soda,” I said.
He saw my badge. “You folks are so good about that. I can never get any of you to drink.”
“Oh,” I said, and tucked the badge in my breast pocket. “Well, not at lunch. Maybe later.”
I ordered the ‘award winning chili’ and a side salad. It all came with two thick pieces of buttered toast. The chili was good, but I don’t know what kind of award it would have won.
While sitting at the bar, I looked over all the bottles. There were several kinds of tequila, so that must have been the most popular kind of drink served. Only two kinds of rum, though: white and dark.
“See something you like?” the bartender asked.
I shook my head. “No, I was just wondering if they still make that 151 rum.”
He looked back at the row of bottles. “No, they stopped making it. I think too many people got burned doing stupid things. It had a little metal grate on it, but folks would pry it off.”
A woman came in with a large suitcase and the bartender went to take care of her. It turned out she was a representative from one of the local breweries and had brought samples with her. They chatted for a while as I ate my chili. The toast came in handy at the end to help clean the bowl.
The woman left and the bartender came back holding three cans of beer. “Want a free sample?”
“I really can’t,” I said.
He chuckled and started to pour the cans out in the sink. “You guys really are good.”
“Your tax dollars at work,” I said.
“I’d ride more if you ran later,” he said. “Plus, you got a real homeless problem. I came in one night and there was a guy there who cleared the car, he smelled so bad.”
“Have you tried Tiger Balm?” I asked. Then, in response to his look. “Just a dab under the nose. A girl showed me that. Said she learned it from Silence of the Lambs.”
He laughed. “Oh, I remember that. But, I think they used Vick’s.”
I pointed across the street at the pharmacy. “Think they carry it?”
“I think you should get a packet of it free with each ticket,” he said. “Or get turnstiles. Maybe that won’t be a problem after y’all go underground.”
“Oh?”
“The new line,” he said. “It’s supposed to be underground.”
