There's an interesting theory on why we live in a patriarchy and it's down to idiots and drugs.

So you know how idiots are more likely to be male? It's down to having only one X-chromosome. (Agreed, that's the reason why it's more likely that geniouses are male as well.) So these idiots where important parts of early human societies as it was believed, that they had a direct link to the gods. Their hallucinations and ramblings where believed to be holy. 

Soon some men discovered by accident, that when they were taking different hallocinogenic mushrooms and plants, they could talk to the gods as well. They made it male-only. So they had this drug-gatherings and talked to gods and called it religion. That's when they made everyone believe that they were better than the rest. 

So the reason the world developed mostly into a patriarchy is because male druged idiots believe they can talk to god.
