AAAAAA I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO REPLY TO THIS!! HELLO BUD I HOPE YOU'RE WELL!! 💖💖💖I love forcing my music taste onto people so this is a perfect excuse lmao
1. Radio Protector // 65daysofstatic
YAY my favorite song ever! When that beat hits at 1:05...I could hold up a whole overpass with that level of hype.
2. Let Go // Imogen Heap
Another old favorite 💜
3. If There's a Rocket Tie Me To It // Snow Patrol
There's plenty of overlap to be drawn between my favorite ships, but somehow the real point of synthesis is, "If There's a Rocket Tie Me To It." How do ALL of my ships fit this song—?! "I was always set to self-destruct, though..."
4. Sailor // Hem
My friend Libby showed me this song at a sleepover at her dad's house when we were like eleven lol. We used to trade songs back and forth while drawing Warrior Cats 💖
5. Drag Path // Twenty One Pilots
I was already obsessed with this song and then I watched the music video and FUCK. Tyler Joseph was so struck by Tobias Gundorff's stop-motion student film that like a decade post-debut he reached out like, "Hey Tobias, can you expand on your student film for our 'Drag Path' music video??" and now I'm a lost cause.
My friend Fred pointed out the way the elder rabbits pass on their vices to the little bunny. There's a real emphasis put on the pipe and the wine and the playing cards*. In that way, the wolf works as a metaphor for death as well as addiction. It's like the little bunny inherited the monster that's chasing him down. He watches the wolf kill his elders, and then when the bunny tries to escape, the ensuing chase sequence takes place between artifacts of his elders' legacy.
Then THE HAND** yanks the little bunny out of the wolf's jaws and into the spotlight. But is the bunny really saved from the wolf? Isn't fame just another form of addiction? FUCK EVERYTHING. I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS SHORT FILM, ROSE. The way the original student film affected Tyler Joseph so strongly it lived on a couch in his brain for years and years—the fact the song itself was supposed to be a limited-release bonus track but then resonated with fans so hard it went viral and Twenty One Pilots had to make an official release...This song really tackles "legacy" from every direction. So often the impressions we leave behind aren't the ones we'd expect. Last night my friend told me he always names his Pokémon trainer "Luke" after a kid he knew when he was like six. They didn't even get along that well; they haven't spoken in maybe twenty years! Luke is out there somewhere making coffee and paying bills, completely unaware he's living a double life as a Pokémon trainer on my roommate's Switch. We leave such deep marks on each other all the time and never realize. How many cameos have I made in other families' trip photos? How many people tried something new because of me, to their benefit or detriment? At this point I don't even WANT to keep listening to this song I CAN'T PHYSICALLY PRY MYSELF AWAY
*The cards are framed like a symbol of magic and performance, but I can't shake the gambling association
**MAN there are SO MANY WAYS to interpret the hand, but I'm less given to "the hand of god" than the hand of "the industry" (or more recently "the algorithm")
