could you make a fic about dazai meeting odasaku's sibling? platonic or romantic its up to u!! i love how u write <3 🍓
Can I just say hell yes this is an amazing idea also them for the compliment mwamwah ur so cute bro || DAZAI X READER, the slowest burn I have EVER written.
CONTAINS GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS OF BURNS; VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED
Also, I made reader an ability user with an ability that contradicts odas. Basically, their ability is to find any solution to any situation (esp if they're in danger) by looking into the past for a fix. (Kinda like the last seven minutes of a person's life. oh also the ability works for only seven minutes) the best advantage of this ability is the fact that the user may view their solution from ANY life, whether it be the case of a prey escaping it's predator or a whole another person doing whatever, theyy can see the solution. Heavily inspired by one of @chuulyssa's works.
🍓Sypnosis :: a new addition to the agency, seemingly normal at first, turns out to have been tied with a senior agent's past. Shared nostalgia and reminiscence over the deceased draws two forces towards one another, as a string of eventually forming mutual interest ties them together. Slight hints bring ideas together to reveal not one, but two identities related to one person, someone who had changed the fated of many through his own. (Dazai x reader, platonic/romantic)
Above the bustling uzumaki cafe, the detective agency had been buzzing with news of a new member joining soon. It wasn't too often nowadays that the new additions had already planned to join, so this was quite a breath of fresh air compared to the usual split moment decisions.
According to the early morning regulars downstairs, the most excited was likely a young boy, with a sort of country accent, and a girl who sounded a bit older, but not enough to be over 20 or so. If you had asked the owner—or the waitress for that matter, they would have likely said it was the young farm boy, Kenji, and a the junior agent's younger sister, Naomi. It really wasn't quite the big shocker, as they were rather enthusiastic as compared to their peers. It must have been that touch of youthful joy that remained within them, the type of thing that made being young enjoyable, or at the very least—tolerable.
At around 10:00am, an hour after the earliest employees (and the tanizakis) had came in, a slight creak could be heard at the agency door. It was likely the new detective—or a client. Both of them were fine. A head peeked into the main entrance with a small "excuse me?", in query of whether they should enter or not. A somewhat energetic, polite voice realized the entry of the brand new co-worker and acknowledged it through the words: "oh, you must be the new addition to the office, welcome in!" Said the boy with a smile. The person standing in the doorway reciprocated, following the instruction and entering with a somewhat nervous bow and a greeting. Upon hearing a new voice, a blonde man with a scarily serious expression emerged from behind a wall seperating the work area from the entrance and one upped the agent standing in front of him. While doing so he had began to speak.
"Oh, good, You're here. I recommend being a bit earlier next time, but since you're new I'll let you pass for now. Don't expect to get past with tardiness again however."
A nod, geez this man was real strict. He was definitely the annoying type. At least he was clear with his needs and instructions, that made stuff easier to deal with. He started to hand out the tasks and show them around within the span of around 46 seconds, rather fast if you were to ask. By the time they had gotten into the rhythm of a task, came a voice high pitched in the teasing way. Dancing and spinning around, entered a man wearing a beige coat, one that felt oddly familiar. He made his way over to the blondie, who's name they learned to be ‘Kunikida’. On his way, his rather empty brown eyes, which looked as if someone had dipped the abyss in honey, darted over to the new addition. For some reason it felt that even if for a split second—something had shifted within his eyes.
After what had sounded like the strange man annoying Mr. Kunikida and a bunch of noises that sounded like someone getting beaten, he walked up and approached the one who was finishing up their first task and tried to start a bit of small talk.
"Well it certainly is the fairest of mornings today, isn't it! You must certainly be the new agent everyone's been talking about—I'm Osamu Dazai, what's your name?"
Glancing up, a short reply from the subject in the conversation
"...—Oda." (Pretty sure this is odas last name and sakunosuke is his first but idk.)
He hadn't heard the first part.
Oda sakunosuke, the man who had changed Dazai, the one who was now dead—could this have been a relative of his? Or maybe it was just a coincidence—oda is still a common surname, right? Yet there was something in the features, the way their personality seemed to feel like odas—but different, it was also within the features—the very same eye shape, it was all tied together, yes. This new agent had to be related to odasaku in some way, most probably a younger sibling, it seemed.
Dazai took a breath, this wouldn't be much. Just a sibling of a friend. All he had to do was treat them like any other member and he would be fine—no matter how smart one was, they could never get past Dazai.
They could never crack his masks.
Your first mission was on the 26th.
Often you had entered the office at nine to nine thirty am so you'd (somewhat) keep up with Kunikida, however, today was different.
It was your brother's birthday.
You had only found out of his death two years ago, when you had to contact of all people, the government to find his whereabouts. For all those years you thought he was missing, he could have been dead. He was dead now.
You remember the orphanage where the two of you grew up. Your parents—they had died, leaving you both to fend for yourselves. He was around maybe ten when he dissapeared, and for all those years you thought he was just missing.
You remember the orphanage attendant who would take care of you. She was the most caring person you knew at the time, and every year, she would call the local police (whom she was rather close with) to ask them for a favour; tell Sakunosuke Oda “happy birthday”, as a ray of hope to hold onto. It had become a tradition, even after you had left the place.
Picking up a boquet from a local florist, you wondered how she was doing now. The flowers were white and orange in colour, with a singular blue rose in the middle (ADO ME TIONED?!! ;?! RAHHHHHH!?!!!!!!!!!!! ;:;:;! ;!). You never knew why it was there, but it looked rather nice — something he would like. Once, you had read that blue roses symbolised the impossible. Sometimes it would be a passing thought in your mind, did Sakunosuke have any dreams that were said to be impossible? It was almost always then, that you would realise one thing; you didn't know your brother well.
You had always wanted to, after all he was your only surviving family member, but you didn't have enough time to. Yet, if you did have the time, would you still be able to be closer to him? You remember him being a fan of novels, often the meaningful kind. It was the reason why you had always picked up a novel for him, as you were doing now.
A boquet of orange and blue with a novel consisting of a grey cover, that was your gift this year. While walking to the cemetery, you peeked at your watch. 8:39am, you had a forty minutes before being late. Each step took you closer to the place your brothers corpse lay, it was bittersweet. While you were at the white gates of the area, a faint figure could be seen where your brother's grave was, for some reason it had looked oddly familiar—too much so. Pushing the entrance open and walking closer, you understood why the figure had looked familiar.
It was the very man who had looked at you strangely, it was—
What had you felt, at the time?
Was it shock, or provocation?
You had seen Dazai, perched on the ground with his back resting against the gravestone and his head tilted up. He had seemed as if having a deep conversation with an old friend, whom he hadn't met in so long.
Yet—why your brother's? On his birthday too.
Did he know him before? No, that's a silly question— of course he knew him, only the ones who knew the boy you had spent your childhood with knew where he rested. Yet, dazai could have just picked a grave at random, couldn't he?
You snapped out your thoughts when you realized that dazai was staring at you, his eyes had gone darker than they were the last time you saw him. The honey glaze had dried and lost its shine, now resembling a dark piece of amber.
This was certainly an awkward moment for you both. (Please get the deco*27 reference)
It was the silence that made it terribly unbearable, yet thanks to his kind act, dazai broke it. Closing his eyes shut and sighing, before reopening them, he spoke.
"I won't bother acting surprised, I was able to figure out that you were related to Oda in some way when you had first joined."
You stood there, in a rather surprised silence for about three to four seconds, before turning your gaze to dazai's eyes and asking him a question which was bound to be answered later on.
"If you don't mind, how did you meet my brother? "
That confirmed Dazai's suspicions.
He cracked a small smile, the kind that he would flash a hundred times to almost the entirety of Yokohama's population.
"Fate threw me at his doorstep."
It must have been one of his weird metaphors again, maybe.
Rather embarrassingly, you had forgotten to drop off your brother's birthday gift. This resulted in you walking back to his tombstone, placing the presents, and uttering your respects. Thankfully, dazai was nowhere to be found in this situation.
The whole scene had caused you to be later than usual, which resulted in a scolding from Kunikida centered around punctuality and responsibility.
You of course, didn't hear a single word of it.
Your thoughts were too occupied with Dazai's presence at the graveyard.
His answer left you questioning whether he had been spouting poetry in his day to day speech, or had he been dead serious with his statement. Either way, it was tough to trust him as it was crystal clear that his very being was built of lies; a facade of perfection, one which drew in others like moth to flame. Yet you had to swear to yourself, to not emerge as a moth, but rather as their widely loved cousins, a butterfly.
While you were rousing through your thoughts, Kunikida's voice reminded you of your mission today. From what he had said, it would be with Dazai. Saying that it shocked you would be an understatement, as you had expected Dazai to stay absent for the rest of the day. It was likely by now you believed that your day couldn't get any more embarrassing. Hearing a slight yawn behind you, you instinctively turned back to see Dazai walking over to you and Kunikida, with one of his arms stretching upwards and his other supporting it. His head tilted slightly towards the right, completing the tired look that threw on mask of disinterest.
Kunikida rambled on a bit about the mission's details, complete with yelling directed to the man standing next to you, who distracted the taller man in front.
Your task was clear and simple, disable a bomb in the nearby school and figure out the culprit, something you wouldn't have too much trouble doing. Shoving your small bottle of water in your pant pocket, you headed put with Dazai. (Whom you practically had to drag out)
The train ride was far from silent.
Dazai stood near the door, leaning on the pole made for people to hold onto. You on the other hand, stood two seats away, holding onto the hanging straps made to help keep balance on a train. Obviously Dazai still nagged you ever so often, but standing there, a memory resurfaced from your early teen years.
You were on the train, standing near the same spot. Out of the blue, you had gotten the idea that if you stood without holding onto anything, it would make you look cooler.
You did just that, and it didn't go well.
With the trains constant wobbling, which didn't even make the older people on the train budge, you fell on your butt. You should have known, if you were to be on such a train with your build, you would fall down. (Pretend reader is a bit weaker and shorter).
It was probably the most embarrassing day of your life, with people glancing at you but pretending to ignore given their pity upon your humiliation.
It was the kind of memory that sent shivers down your spine, in fear of reoccurring again. There were many such instances you could recall, but with the train stopping at your station, you had to zone back in.
The two of you took a cab to the school, which despite it's blaring speed, left much time for Dazai to continue speaking to you. It should be mentioned that you, on the other hand, were far from the speaking mood as nausea hovered over your senses due to the sharp turns the driver was taking. You resorted to simply nodding along with Dazai's chitchat, until he would finally shut up. That of course, didn't happen. By the time you exited the vehicle and went into the school, you were ready to throw up. Thankfully, the air was rather fresh, calming down your body and convincing it to not purge out yesterday's instant ramen.
You both ran into the school, being led by faculty staff guiding you to the explosive. It seemed that most students were out in the field, which was good as the impact would likely be lower there since the bomb was near the opposite end of the school, right?
But there was one problem. Of all students ranging from grades five to nine, you couldn't see a single student of eight. It was practically impossible that all of them would remain absent on one day, so you began working on the bomb with one request to Dazai:
"Dazai, no matter what, find those eighth graders and get them out of the building"
It was what had to be done, even if it put yours and Dazai's lives at risk, you had to save those kids, or else you wouldn't be able to live with yourself. With a small, yet deep breath, you activated your ability. Images flashed before your eyes, you were seeing through the eyes of someone whom you had or hadn't known, watching their every step before carefully repeating them to avoid any accidents. One slip of a finger, and it would all be over.
Dazai got to it quickly, faster than you had ever seen him do something. Yet it wasn't time to ponder on the kind of person he was. You had to disable the bomb before anything else to prevent as many injuries and deaths as possible. With the lives of the children in mind, you got to work.
Dazai had never seen you so serious.
It was that expression of pure determinationon paired with your goal to save the children that had him running as if he were attempting to save the people who mattered the most to him, even if that really wasn't the case. The eighth graders were likely in their classroom, as 11:52 wasn't a common break time. Remembering the classroom charts from the wall near the first few lockers which were found upon entry, Dazai headed up to the fifth floor. Rooms 8-A and 8-C, he could see the sign in the right hand hallway, going over to the rooms, he slowed down a bit. Bursting in would scare the students, so it was better to knock on the classroom door before opening it.
Raising his knuckles and knocking twice, he used his other hand to slide the door open. The classroom had about 23 students, all of which who looked surprised. Well, except for the three who were sleeping. A young boy, with dark waves for hair, was the first to realize that this wasn't anyone they knew, but before the panic could set in, Dazai flashed his signature simple smile, before beginning to talk to the kids.
"Don't worry, I'm not here to harm you kids. I just need to talk to you guys for a bit."
Glancing over to the back row of the classroom, he spoke "Could any of you tell me if there was a teacher in your class in this period?"
A girl with short shoulder length hair from the row his eyes were on, began to speak.
"Uh, not really. We—we think the teacher's absent today."
She had a slight stutter in her words, despite a voice that sounded brave and courageous. It was only natural for the kid to be at least a bit scared, considering a random man just showed up to their classroom and started asking questions. The students were less likely to listen to him if they were suspicious, so it would be best to introduce himself to the kids first.
"It seems you're all a bit dazed, I apologize for not introducing myself earlier. I'm Dazai Osamu, and I'm here to help out the school with some stuff. You guys are going to leave a bit early today after a small assembly outside right now, so I recommend packing your bags quickly now, okay?"
The students, despite being a bit skeptical, followed Dazai's instructions. His whole plan relied on his partners ability to disable, or at the very least postpone the bomb. As the students packed their bags, Dazai went over into the other room, following not the same, but a similar pattern. He knocked first, introduced himself, and told the students of the situation and how they had to leave early. A female student with ginger hair reminiscent of a dried orange peel whispered something into her friends ear, which Dazai caught.
"You remember that one bomb threat that this one fifth grader got, right? I think the guy might've been serious. "
Yet it was best to not confirm their suspicions as it would just cause panic. The students were almost done packing up, it would be a waste to send them into a frenzy and possibly get them injured.
The head of a tan student with sharp eyes (hyuna alnst basically) peeked out of 8-A's room, to see Dazai standing in front of 8-C's room. With a deep, yet soft voice she called out:
"Mr.Dazai, we're done packing our school bags."
Dazai spun around with a gleeful smile. The students of 8-C weren't fast packers, so most of the time of 8-A's packing was likely from a bit of small discussion, paired with voting who would tell Dazai that they completed the task.
"Well then, if you have everything you need then let's head down! I'll get you guys some soda from the vending machines if you're all fast enough!"
Ah, how naive these children were. At the mention of soda almost all the students grabbed their bags and ran out the classroom, they looked as if they were having so much fun— completely ignoring the fact that there's a bomb on the first floor being disabled at the very moment. It was risky to depend on the workings of one person which could either save or kill the students, but Dazai had faith in you.
After all, you weren't too different from Odasaku.
The red timer indicating three minutes left till deployment went black.
You had done it, you had disabled the bomb successfully.
Words couldn't describe the relief which washed over you upon confirmation that the bomb was disabled successfully, and wouldn't take the lives of these students. You had seen Dazai directing the students of grade eight out into the courtyard where everyone else was, he glanced at you for a split second, and you smiled at him with confirmation that everyone would be safe.
After checking for any other hazards, you went out to where the teachers and students were. The teachers stayed rather silent, but you could feel the relief on their faces seeing you exit with a smile, indicating that your efforts had ended in success. The students on the other hand, were a (thankfully) living display of confusion laced with comedy. Kids stood cracking jokes and knuckles with their friends, stretching, discussing and daydreaming. While they didn't seem to be the typical lot of students, they still had a sort of charm to them which really did make them stand out. It was almost nostalgic, as of you'd seen those types before, somewhere..
Upon noticing your arrival, the teachers immediately greeted you with their thanks. It was a bit overwhelming, considering how they practically swarmed you, but it did feel somewhat sweet nonetheless.
From within the crowds of teachers, the vice principal came up to you, and shook your hand, after which she went over to Dazai and shook his. This was while meticulously thanking you both for your service, and stating how without you two the future of yokohama would miss out great opportunities.
Some students glared at her with distaste, seems she was likely more of the angrier or stricter type for them to be looking at her that way. You hadn't went to a proper school as a child, in fact— your only source of education was the one offered by the orphanage. It was still as clear as day in your head, how aggressive the head teachers would be compared to the subject teachers. Their yelling, those insults, the punishments. Your brother would often help you to avoid them, or at the very least, make them feel milder or reduce the pain. It was a type of solace within the darkness, his care was the ray of light that you followed.
It was the care he had for you that made you want to be like him.
After finishing up with listening to her speak, you and Dazai both quickly excused yourselves and took your leave.
Walking to the station under blaring autumn heat had never been the best experience, but for some reason, it felt relieving today. Maybe it was because you had helped people, even if it be in the slightest, or maybe it was because you were able to survive through a school authority figures speech (those things really hadn't been anyone's strong suits, had they?). It honestly didn't matter, now you both got to take the train back to the agency, after which you would work on some reports, help with some documentation, maybe talk with Yosano or the clerks, and then leave.
It was simple, routine and comforting, the kind of thing that always helped out.
The platform wasn't too far, only a turn or two away. You and dazai both had your tickets, so there wasnt really a chance of being late unless something else popped up. Overall, this was in, in short, practically perfect. Unrealistic, but you'd take it.
There was a bit of crowding, but it really was unsurprising considering that well—the trains really were the main transportation system for people, regardless of time.
There were various kinds of people around you when you looked around, and at your side walked dazai. There were eight minutes left till the train would arrive, sadly you had known from prior experience that those eight minutes would seem to be rather long. Standing around the sitting areas of the station, as the seats themselves were full, you watched people push past one another and apologize. Five minutes.
Three kids, two boys and one girl walked past. Something about their shared joy made you heart squeeze. The tallest boy had similar features to the girl, maybe they were siblings? The other boy was friends with both of them so it didn't quite matter.
You spared a glance at dazai, only to find him peering right at you with a smile. This was uncomfortable to say the least. You looked back at where the kids were, but they had left. The train would be here anytime now.
The train ride itself was calm, or at least you wish you it was. At your side, dazai kept blabbering on about suicide and how he would just love to jump into a river with a pretty lady and meet his end. In an attempt to be mature however, you payed him no mind.
A curious looking, owlish girl stood at the corner of the train car, attempting to keep balance without a support. It was a sweet sight to see, really. Her little stumbling was endearingng and something on you just wanted to smoosh her right against yourself.
You noticed a peculiar pendant adorning her neck just when more people got onto the train from the stop. It didn't really seem like that big of a deal, until you smelled something which you shouldn't be smelling upon a train. Other people smelled it too, and despite not paying mind to at first, they began to start panicking. You glanced over again at the girl, and for some reason her necklace seemed to be burning up.
It looked as if the pendant was igniting. Dazai must've noticed it too, as he was quick to press the emergency stop button near the gates. After a short amount of time, the train did in fact stop, but it seemed late. You yelled out a warning;
"Everyone get as far from this corner as possible!" The people in their panic were quick to act as you grabbed the little girl with the pendant which was now revealed to be an explosive. You attempted to remove it, but your efforts were to no avail. Your best move now was to use your body as a shield.
You looked at Dazai, your expression determined which told him all he didn't want to hear.
"Dazai San, please get away for your own safety. I'll be fine!"
He didn't want to leave. He didn't want your fate to end up the same as your brother's—he didn't want to lose someone again. He didn't want to lose you.
Before he could protest, there was a deafening sound.
The sound of gunshots filled his ears, Dazai was too late. He went inside, and saw it. Odasaku had fallen.
Rushing over to him couldn't bring his friend back. He was on the verge of death already. His friend would leave him for good.
He pleaded, yet oda's death was unavoidable. Dazai was changed for the better, yet good deeds wouldn't bring Odasaku back.
He had failed his friend, twice now.
Your body, despite being in horrible condition, was still alive. He could still save you.
After quickly making sure that nobody else was in grave danger, Dazai took your body upon his shoulder and quickly got on a cab. He rang Yosano as fast as he could, if she picked up, you could be saved. The first call had no response, Dazai called again.
By some miracle, the phone was picked up. Dazai briefed the situation to Yosano, who listened attentively. The cab was fast, but you seemed to be going out faster. Cutting the call with Yosano, Dazai tried his best to console you—if you could even hear him, that is. Your outfit was burnt through, the explosion had left blotches of your skin peeling off, white puss forming near them. You were unresponsive, but still had a pulse.
Tha can had arrived, and Yosano was waiting there. As soon as the vehicle stopped, you were brought out and "thou shalt not die" was activated.
You didn't remember much other than Dazai.
His voice echoed in your mind, you don't recall ever having heard him with that sort of tone. He sounded so worried, thinking back on it, it even felt kind of cute. Actually—no, scrape that, you were starting to sound like him.
You managed to open your eyes. Moving your body was hard, but maybe you could do it? You tried, but there were no results. You felt a weight near your side at the edge of the bed. From what you could see, you must've been in the agency's infirmary.
After a good amount of eye contact with the ceiling, you finally managed to move your head. You immediately looked over to where the weight was, and to your surprise you found Dazai.
He seemed to be asleep, his elbows were pressed into the mattress and his forehead was resting atop his wrists making his face hard to see, or rather, shadowing it. You hadn't quite expected him to be there to be honest, but it's not as if you minded it.
Reaching out your hand slowly, you brushed your fingers against the area in between his ear lobe and the hinge of his jaw. Your palm relaxed into his cheek. It felt Instinctive, youd didn't know why you were doing it, but you just did it. The sudden contact had woken up Dazai and caused you to pull back. His eyes were baggy and surrounded by dark circles, but he still put on that signature smile.
"Oh Belladonna! You're up already!"
Wow, since when had he decided to use such a fancy Nick name for you?
It didn't quite matter however. His eyes were uncharacteristically soft, with them boring into you. It felt off, but in a good way. You felt a slight tingling in your cheeks and stomach, speaking of which, hadn't the bomb affected your skin? Your thoughts however, were disrupted as you felt dazais fingers upon your hands. They were long, thin, and beautiful. Slightly cold to the touch, yet could still melt you. He traced patterns upon the veins near your knuckles before giving your hands a squeeze. His touch was relaxing and comforting, just as his presence in the moment.
Things had seemed to go wrong, but maybe—just maybe they happened for the greater good.
"Ah right—be prepared to deal with Kunikida kun's nagging. You passed the test."
By the way guys the little girl died anyways love y'all mwamwa
