Steve trying to comfort Robin when (he thought) she was crying is another example of what an amazing person he's become. He's been tortured for hours by Russians, beaten into unconsciousness, and wakes up only for their escape attempt to be foiled almost immediately by their topple, but instead of worrying about himself, he talks to her gently and tries to comfort her. And after they talk for a minute, he tries to reassure her that they won't die down here, even though he's probably pretty sure they are going to die down here and he's probably in so much pain he almost wouldn't mind if they did, but his priority in that moment is her peace of mind. He's not just a good guy now, or the guy with the bat; he's kind, and that's a rare quality in someone who's been through what he has
