As promised earlier today, here are the mosaics from the Second Avenue Subway 72nd St Station that all feature the red balloon. Starting with the father giving one to his kid, and ending with the cool dude looking - longingly - up to the same balloon high up in the sky. Well beyond his reach. Another four characters from the mosaics on the 72nd St station on the Q line. Two musicians (well, people with instruments) and an intellectual looking couple (not necessarily). The beauty of what Vik Muniz made is partly in the - often seemingly completely random - combination of characters. Like these for instance. So beautiful! I think the Q 72nd St Station is one of the most sympathetic subway stations in the city. The project is called ‘Perfect Strangers’. Muniz's artwork comprises 36 mosaic-cast portraits of real people who look like they are waiting for a train. These portraits, based on photographs of his acquaintances, are scattered along the exits and mezzanine. Muniz himself is also among the mosaics. Yes, you sometimes meet some strange-looking people on the train. But they are usually very nice.
