Today is the festival of St.Rose de Lima better known as the La Rose Festival. La Rose is a folk tradition in St.Lucia which started off as a traditional friendly society in a post colonized St.Lucia. Traces of friendly societies can be found in Great Britain in the 1800s which is more than likely the model from which this expression emerged. Although the exact date of origin is unknown, in past times La Rose groups offered community support to members in the form of financial assistance for funeral expenses, unemployment and other areas of need. While La Rose aimed to be a resource to community members, present day it is a cultural celebration of St.Lucian Identity. La Rose groups are organized in a Pageant style parade of a Royal Family. Members of the group include a Queen, King, Prince, Princess, Governor, Judge, President etc. Each member plays a unique role in putting on a performance filled with satire, musicality and the ethos of " St.Lucianess" The emphasis of La Rose is placed on circling around a table complemented with a bouquet of Roses in the middle while singing, dancing and expressing the joy for the festival. Live folk instruments such as the shak shak and tanbou (drums) maintain the pulse of the festival. More so a singer known as the Chantwel, sings the song of La Rose expressing joy, sadness, lament and pride in the festival.
