One Day... || Elliot & Lumina

Elliot had a certain dream that he hadn’t gotten to taste in years. The orphanage, when he was growing up there, was sponsored in part by a wealthy elderly woman with far too much money and no children to speak of, and while she hadn’t fostered any children due to her failing health, she made sure that they had a place to come and play once a week, so they could get out of the orphanage, stay socialized, et cetera.

She’d had a beautiful grand piano, one that Elliot had been enchanted by. And he had a certain lust to learn to play it one day - and to own one very similar.

His absent daydreaming drew him to the Musiceum one quiet day when he was fortunately off work. He knew he didn’t have the funds to purchase anything at all at the moment, but he had a craving on his tongue, on the pads of his fingers, on the surface of his eyes, simply to take in the innate beauty and grace of an instrument. And as he made his way inside, he saw the most beautiful grand piano he’d ever beheld.

“There,” he murmured as he drifted toward it, his smile wrinkling the corners of his eyes as he stood and basked in it. He knew enough not to touch - he didn’t want the oils on his fingers to eat away at the ivory - but to stand near it would fulfill him for today. Until I can own it.

He felt a gaze on him, and he looked toward a very young woman standing nearby, who seemed to be dressed as an employee. “Forgive me,” he said, giving her a half-bow to accompany his smile. “It’s simply stunning. I had to take it in.”

Birds of a Feather || Lillie & Lumina

[ ☀ ] — While keeping track of the latest fashions was something Lillie practically had to do as a celebrity in order to stay relevant and in the public eye, it was also one of her favorite personal hobbies. She absolutely loved to get dolled up in cute skirts and dresses, and always used a cut of her paycheck to buy herself a few new outfits at least every other week.

Upon witnessing an Arcadian girl win the recent Fashion Show with her charming vintage style, the weather girl had grown increasingly curious about the neighboring isle’s fashions. To a lot of Leudans, much of the clothes the Arcadians wore were generally considered ‘outdated’, but Lillie liked to think of it as ‘rustic’. Being from the countryside herself, she had a lot of appreciation for the style.

Which is why she finds herself stepping into Sonata Tailoring, Arcadia’s premier (or, only) clothing shop. Upon seeing the dresses on display at the front of the shop, Lillie makes a beeline for them, only to stumble back when she finds herself running into someone who had been heading the same way.

“Oh---” She wrings her hands in front of her chest, expression a mix of panicked and apologetic as she looks at the woman she ran into, “I am so sorry about that! Are you okay?”

15 - afterlife

It was freezing, and she'd left the faucet dripping.

Marlin listened to it - tap, tap, tap - as he slid the lockpick back into his pocket and left the door barely cracked behind him. His heart matched the rhythm of the falling drops.

His footsteps were silent.

He slid the blade from its sheath as he crept through the apartment along memorized floorboards. Instinct made him study every floor he crossed for creaky boards - though he'd walked these floors initially to meet her in the living room for a kiss, or to sneak into her bed after a late heist, or to find the spare toothbrush in the bathroom and clean his mouth of booze and smoke before they went on their date, he'd always memorized them. Always.

He wondered if his younger self had been aware of why he'd need to.

She wasn't in the living room. Wasn't in the bathroom. He checked them with the most cursory glance, looking for any hint of color or movement, before moving to the next, barely even breathing.

She was, however, in the second bedroom - the one she'd repurposed for a study with Marlin's help to build all of her bookcases and her desk - in a chair with her back to him as she read.

His heart pounded, and the sudden ache in his chest still took him by surprise. It had been in there a week - that bullet - and he still wore a bandage over the wound, reluctant to see if the feeble scar tissue could hold up without a dressing.

He froze in the doorframe. Her black hair, with the shock of pink cutting through it. Slouching forward. They'd always had bad posture, both of them. They'd joked about which of them gave it to the other.

The dagger shook in his hands.

She did this to you. Her men gave you that bullet. If you don’t end this now, you'll never be free.

And, just like that, he steeled himself, and he moved forward.

The blade sank cleanly between her ribs, and before she could make a sound he covered her mouth with his other hand, his mouth against her ear. "If I was you," he murmured, "I would hope that there is no afterlife for us to cross paths in."

He drew the blade out. Stabbed it in again. This time her figure collapsed forward, held up only by his hand.

She twitched. He stabbed again. Her blood coated his glove. He stabbed again.

And again. And again and again and again and again--

Headlights easing over her window made him come back to himself - harsh panting and shaking hands and hazy eyes - and he pulled back, letting her collapse there, her back a ruined expanse of blood.

"I'll break the world for us, Marlin."

He turned on his heel, her blood dripping from his glove, and he left.
