Myoin, a priest who became the chief priest at Jomyo-in浄名院Temple in 1876 decided to erect 1,000 stone carvings of Jizo (Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) . After his goal was reached, he set another goal of erecting 84,000 of them. 84,000 is an auspicious number and it is supposed to mean a “great number”. And it is said that the Buddha wrote 84,000 teachings. In the end, Myoin didn’t reach his goal of 84,000 but at this temple they have 24,000. Jizo or what we say “Ojizo sama” お地蔵様 can also be found along travel routes and just all over Japan if you notice. Jizo Bosatsu is the protector of children, expectant mothers, firemen, and travelers. #Ueno #ugusuisudani #Jomyoin #お地蔵様 #jizo #84000 #Tokyo #yanaka #uenotemples #ksitigarbhabodhisattvavihara #stonecarvings https://www.instagram.com/p/B04iYAEnMp8/?igshid=12famvue6qiie
