Why can't you stand Neil Gaiman? I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm not going to defend him, just curious
I don’t think I have very sophisticated reasons for it, I just don’t like his writing and find it hacky and overrated (it really grates on me that you see him everywhere quoted as an authority on How to Write). I think of him as someone who is very talented at self-promotion, but his ideas are really just a sort of hodge-podge of stuff culled from mythology and better fantasy writers.
I’m also deathly allergic to whimsy, so that doesn’t help.
I mean if other people like him and take pleasure from his work, great. But to me he’s the writing equivalent of that one song that makes you jump up and turn off the radio.
