These days you spend 110% of your time devoted to your work and training, improving your own strength and agility, brushing up on your weapons, and working with your new mount, trying to get them to settle down. It’s been a struggle, but this date is burned into your memory with no hope of forgetting: 6th dark season, 12th bilunar perigee.

You’ve been assembling this package on and off over the past week, but when you send it, it includes:

One (1) hand-carved pirate ship, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand

One (1) griffon feather, iridescent, from your mount. It’s big and flashy enough to make a nice plume for a certain pirate’s accessories.

You include a note, but all it says is “to karkat” and “from nepeta.” You’ll think of better words to say to him, at some point. Tonight is not that point.

Your second night of training was just as great as the first: which is to say, exhausting, upsetting, strenuous and dirty. You get home, you work on cleaning your uniform, feeling yourself begin to form yet another routine you’ll never break out of...

And then Karkat messages you.

At first you’re thrilled. You’re not sure anything else could bring you that sort of happiness, and just like that every speck of happiness is crushed under the weight of a reality you’ve been avoiding for far too long.

liohart thanks for saying something i guess. you know i i kind of came to that conclusion? on the meteor. i figured it was pointless. i moved on. i thought you'd changed by now. like everyone else. even like me. i've changed, you know that? i've felt stagnant my whole life and even i changed. ... but i understand. thank you.
