Annotating 80 "Bag"s for the 8t Bags book project required a sufficient number of 6 pt figures. What luck! A good supply of 6 pt Century Oldstyle figures were already on hand, and there just so happened to be a fresh font for sale on Ebay...and who the heck else on Earth wants a fresh font of 6 pt Century Oldstyle figures? Nobody. $15. They're so cute I can hardly believe it, but no matter how carefully I handle them, it's impossible to transfer them to the job stick for distribution into the case without pieing them.
If you're still reading, you may or may not be familiar with the term "pie," unless, of course, you too are a hand compositor. If you're not, I'll have to tell you, because I just checked the internet for the spelling of pieing, and found no mention of a definition related to typesetting in Miriam-Webster or Oxford online dictionaries. In the olden days, when people used to set type like this, the term "pie" simply meant to spill type...to make a mess of it...to dump it. Coincidentally, I recently started reading the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin before bed, and a few nights ago he talked about how he pied an entire newspaper page, which he set in one day (daily), then picked it up, redistributed it in the case, and reset the entire page before calling it a day at 11 pm.
