Remembering the 911 Attacks
Two days ago was September 11. At the Morning Volunteer Assembly, Dharma Master Cheng Yen talked about the 911 attacks that occurred in 2001.
The 911 attacks had shocked the world, and everyone was stunned to see it, especially the moment the twin towers collapsed to the ground. Firefighters and police risked their lives to rescue people. Emotions were high for families of those who worked at site of the World Trade Center as they anxiously waited for words on what happened to their loved ones. Parents’ hearts were torn apart when they learned of their son or daughter’s death. Such a horrific and tragic event was the result of ignorance accumulating in people’s minds. When people’s minds accumulate a lot of ignorance and impurities, evil thoughts arise. With a single command, a violent act took place, and many innocent lives were lost.
Seeing the need for more kindness and love in this world, Tzu Chi launched the "Spread the Seeds of Love" campaign. One month after the 911 attacks, Tzu Chi volunteers around the world held prayer ceremonies. Two such ceremonies were broadcasted live to around the world via satellite. On October 13, a prayer ceremony was held in Taipei at the Tzu Chi Guandu Campus in the evening in conjunction with a memorial prayer service held by US Tzu Chi volunteers at the Liberty State Park in New Jersey in the morning. A bell for peace was tolled at the ceremony in Taipei.
The goal of these prayer ceremonies was to bring peace to people’s hearts and also to inspire kindness in people. Fundraisers were also held at the ceremonies. Yet, it was not for money; it was to guide people to set their minds toward kindness. It was also to remind people that impermanence can strike in the world at any time, and that tragic and terrifying events can take place at an instant.
It’s been 21 years since the 911 attacks happened, and people’s memories fade with time. Yet, Master says that we mustn’t let our memories of the 911 attacks fade away. This tragic history serves as a warning for the world and for reminding people to awaken.
