#911 scene analysis

This moment is endlessly fascinating to me.

It was presented to us as something completely ordinary and commonplace, zero ambiguity, when it's actually a pretty intimate position with a lot of body contact. The simple fact it happened IS ambiguous in itself. But what is more telling and damning to me is Eddie's comfort level.

Because it's one thing for a supposedly heterosexual man not to feel self-conscious in the company of your very close best friend you learned only days ago is actually into men romantically and sexually.

It's another thing entirely, no matter the amount of alcohol you absorbed, to feel completely at ease nearly snuggled into said best friend's arms, and looking more at peace and relaxed there than you have ever been with any of the women you were romantically involved with.

Tommy: "is that why you wanted a tour?..."

Buck thinking: ok you got this, you scripted this, just sound normal about it...

Buck: "I'm happy where I'm at..."

(Turns away walking)

Buck thinking: ok play it cool, don't be suspicious...

Tommy: "c'mon you didn't call me cause you just wanted to see the toys...."

Buck thinking: oh sh*t. come up with something else... think think think... be cool about it...

I love this little bit showing Buck's nervousness.

He is SO smitten with the hot pilot! We all noticed he's all huge smiles & hanging on Tommy's every word at Harbour... but I have never seen anyone talk about this bit, specifically Bucks body language.

- When Tommy asks why Buck called, Buck's head whips around SO fast

- he gives his initial answer with a big smile, which as he turns away immediately disappears into a serious nervous look,

- at the same time he wrings his hands together in a nervous action

- but when he looks back at Tommy, theres a big smile plastered on his face again

He didn't recognize his crush as what it was but he knew he just wanted to be spending time with Tommy and it's so adorable how he was so nervous that Tommy would realize it.

Aaaaah it's the super domestic Buddie scene at Buck's loft !!! 😃😃😃😁😁😁

Excited and admirative Chris after asking Buck a math question: "This is awesome dad. Buck knows everything!"

Eddie, in an utterly unimpressed tone: "Yeah, yeah.." 😑😒

Looool he was TOTALLY jealous there 😄 Either a bit peeved that Chris is fawning so much over Buck's new talent, or because HE still cannot do math to save his life 😆

Oh it's Eddie doing the Internet deep dive this time?

"According to this ppl can get new cognitive abilities after a serious injury to the central nervous system. Oh, but some doctors say it's not real." "What, you think I secretely knew the square root of 162 all these years and I was just holding out? Has to be the lightning." "Fair point."

I can't decide if Buck's expression right after that is stunned awe at realizing, once again, that yes, he HAS gained uber cool new mathematical abilities, or him being...taken aback and awed that Eddie just immediately and completely conceded Buck's point? Ok, realistically it's probably the former but it feels like it COULD be the latter too. Because I don't think many people just...accept that Buck is right about something right away with zero arguing necessary. But in any case, there is definitely something on his face there, a vulnerability. (have some crappy cell photos of my TV screen in my attempt to illustrate my point)

LOOOOOOL Buck immediately trying to influence the lights in his loft as Eddie tells him about another lightning struck guy who developed powers over electricity 😂

Buck listing the cool powers he wished he had gained (ESP. Or the ability to see the future) and going "reading into people's minds" as he stares intently right at Chris with a mischievous grin 😄🥰

(yes awwww but also BUCK TRY READING EDDIE'S MIND INSTEAD HE WAS LOOKING AT YOU SOME KIND OF WAY RIGHT BEFORE THAT

Chris (slightly pontifical tone that is only adorable in children): Maybe this is just the first phase. Maybe you'll get more powers the stronger you get.

Buck (delighted): Yes!! Like an actual superhero.

Eddie (conceding): You did get struck by lightning.

Chris (matter-of-fact): Classic origin story.

Looooooooool 😂😂😂😂😂

But the ending though? That is what cinches the definite and undeniable domestic vibe. Buck chuckling fondly, staring at his friend and his son while Eddie gently chides Chris about trying to weasel math homework answers out of Buck, smiling the whole time? And then the way that after musing out loud that he kind of likes the idea of being the guy with the answers, Buck steals a lightning(ha)-quick glance at Eddie, who doesn't notice, before grabbing some popcorn and chewing contentedly?

What exactly was that look at Eddie for, Buck? What did you want his reaction to be?

And we can't see it here, but the scene went on an extra second after this gif, and somehow it really made a difference for me for the scene's overall tone. Because as he chew, Buck links his hands together and he kind of just...settles down? There's a warmth and a simple happiness in him in that moment, just at being together with Eddie and Chris. I love it so, so much 🥰.
