DCAtober Day 1: Bells

It's late, you don't know why you're here so late, you should be at home, in bed. Maybe you thought it'd get you that raise you were gunning for, maybe you were just too focused to notice the time. Maybe you just didn't want to be at home. 

Either way, you're trudging through basement one with bleary eyes, darkened hallways with their red exit lights doing little to guide you. You know the path to the elevator well though, so it's just a matter of moving forward until you get to it.

Your thoughts are still racing with ideas, filled with upcoming deadlines and projects and so on. You don't know how you're going to get to them all, and honestly, you can't be bothered to care at the moment. It's a problem for tomorrow. Or wait, Monday. Tomorrow's a day off. 

You yawn, and thank god for that, you're going to need it to catch up on sleep. And with all the chores you need to do, you hope you'll pass out quick and it'll be an easy task. 

You're about halfway to the elevator when a sound hits your ears. Bells. 

You pause a moment, then shake your head, must be your imagination. Lack of sleep and all that. You keep moving. 

But then you hear it again. Down the hallway behind you, now a bit more aware and a lot more alarmed. There shouldn't be anyone else down here. Janitorial staff went by hours ago. It should just be you. Alone. 

Against your better judgement, you turn around. Nothing but the pitch black. It's just an empty hallway. 

Until it's not. 

With morbidly humorous timing, the light flickers on several yards down the hall. And you jump. 

Standing under it, is the Daycare Attendant. 

It stares at you, posture tilted, neck bent to look down in your direction. Expressionless as always. Unmoving save for the way its fingers and wrists flex at its sides. Soft twinkling sound echoing from the bells tied to red ribbons. 

You breathe in once, a stuttering breath. You don't know why, but you feel unsafe. Incredibly unsafe. It's just an animatronic, a robot. You're an employee, you're fine. And yet, you feel...

Hunted. 

It tilts its faceplate further, a few soft clicks emitting from the bot. Your palms are sweaty, your heart is racing, and every part of you is screaming to run. 

You take one step back. 

It's neck snaps to attention. You swallow. 

Another, then another. 

It just stares at you, watching as you slowly back up further and further in the direction of the elevator. 

You force yourself not to jump when you make it, instead just pressing the button. Thankfully, it's already called to your floor, and you can slip inside. 

Unthankfully, the light goes out. 

The moment it does, you hear it. Running.

And you panic. 

You frantically spam the door close button, as the attendant charges down the hall. Metal footsteps pounding in time with clattering bells, loud and grating and frightening as they get closer, and closer, and closer—

The doors shut. Pounding on the other side can be heard all throughout the car and the elevator shaft. You're trembling as you continue to hold the button, elevator starting to slowly rise. You don't let go until you're well on your way, breathing a sigh of relief. You're trembling, every movement shaky and uncertain, but it begins to wear off as you continue your ascent. 

That is, until the elevator suddenly comes to a screeching stop, just below your floor, lights flickering for a moment, then going out completely. Below, you hear another grating sound, something enters the shaft. 

Shit.

and there we have it! day 1 done. if you havent caught on i uhhh plan to be doing a continous thing with these, to a point that is, we'll see how far we get, anywho, thanks for reading!

Yay! A Fun Thing!

Thank you @world-of-iridensia for your open tag for people who wanted to participate in this game! I love stuff like this. :D

I guess this game is called "This or That: Questionable Choices Edition". It's like a questionnaire for characters who make questionable decisions, lol. I'll be filling it out for my decently-enough-hearted but hard-headed and impulsive boio Kichi Watanabe. Answers are below the cut, and if you have any questions, I would die of happiness after replying to your comment. Happy Memorial Day everyone!

I tag the following people to play the game, too, because I figured they might enjoy playing the game, and they have WIPs that I am interested in reading about. And I'll leave an OPEN TAG for anyone else who wants to participate as well! :D

He probably qualifies more as an antihero, but at least for his first story arc, the rest of the world sees him as a villain for a little while. :)

With a smile, but he's terrible at lying. XD You would know right away that he's not telling the truth.

He would try to talk his way out, and when that didn't work, he'd try to fight his way out.

Morally grey love interest or morally grey best friend?

Morally gray best friend. "I would die for you" is too cliche. Would you kill for me? Would you help me break into a jail and commit felonies with me? If the answer is no, then we are not friends (by his unconscious standards, I guess).

Your protagonist's fatal flaw: too much trust or not enough?

Too much. He doesn't really think about what's going on until it's already over, and then it occurs to him, "Hey, wasn't that like, a bad thing we just did?"

Writing the betrayal scene or writing the aftermath?

Betrayal, mwa hahahahahhahah >:3 And it ends with some stabbing!

Crime of passion or crime of calculation?

Passion. He does not do any calculating whatsoever. He's kind of dumb. :P

Redemption arc or "they were right all along" arc?

Redemption. But it's a long, hard-earned redemption with many seasons of doubt along the way.

The confession scene happens in a courtroom, a rooftop, or a bed?

Hospital bed! Nothing says "I regret what I did" like life support and a body cast. 😌

Your character keeps one honest thing about themselves, is it their name, their past, or their feelings for one person?

His feelings for one person. It's easy to give a random name, and not too hard to be vague about where you're from, but it's pretty hard to pretend like you don't hate the guy who wants to kill your dad, particularly when you're in the same room with him. Just sayin.

So... it's been a while since I made this post about the gender identity of my lovely non-selectable non-binary characters.

Here's the follow up to that post with some information about Matt, Eve and Jordan and their relationship with their gender.

Matt has the most 'basic' relationship to gender, owing to his pretty traditional upbringing (and a privileged one at that). That being said, his parents split up household chores pretty evenly. He's never questioned his gender and never felt that he needed to. Before university he'd never met anyone that was anything other than cisgender (as far as he knew), and even after that he's never felt the need to review his own perception of his gender. However, because of this, it does mean that he's actually quite secure in his masculinity. This means that in a relationship he doesn't feel the need to act up to traditional gender roles, no matter on his partner. The notable exception to this would be his temper, which is explosive, and probably could have been tempered somewhat when he was younger. Unfortunately the environment around the team sports he enjoyed was not always the most positive with regards to emotions and he was encouraged to suppress a lot of his feelings for a long time.

Eve presents in a way that is usally considered to be very feminine, but it wasn't before going through phases of outright rejecting feminity before reaching a compromise which feels true to her. She doesn't enjoy gender roles or the roles that women are expected to fulfil at all, but she does feel most herself by being soft. She did query her gender briefly when she met Alex, as being non-binary was definitely never presented as being an option in her household, but she quickly realised that she is cisgender and using she/her pronouns fit her even though she dislikes gendered terms overall. Once she realised that it was quite easy for her to meld her interests and passions together, she realised she could happily grow into being herself. She's someone who is so often happily self-sufficient that it's difficult to pin down her role in a relationship to anything like gender.

Jordan's family is a matriarchal one. The strongest members of their family are their grandmother, mother and older sister, as they're the glue that holds their family together. Their family structure before their generation has been quite traditional, with men going to work and women staying at home but thankfully for Jordan, Ronnie (their older sister) has already broken that expectation for them in advance. No matter which gender you select for Jordan, they are quite androgynous in their appearance, dressing in clothes that aren’t masculine or feminine. They dress in close jeans and oversized shirts and hoodies most of the time, and feel the most comfortable in oversized clothes without really showing a lot of their body. They’re quite chill about their gender presentation, and don’t really mind gendered terms, as they’ve been quite engrained into them as being ‘polite’ from church.

hey here’s a fun thing: i work with a set of identical twins and for the first several months of me working at my current establishment, i *didn’t know they were twins*. i thought they were one person. now. i know they are, in fact, two people. i still don’t know their names and i cannot tell them apart when i see them in the same room :)

“Come on, angel, it’s a gorgeous day,” said Crowley expansively, propping his legs up on the window ledge and gesturing through the slightly-grotty window at the Soho passersby. “Look at that sun. Look at those trees. Let’s go outside. Do something fun.”

“Mmm,” said Aziraphale, sat primly at his desk, spectacles at the end of his nose, peering over his taxes.

Crowley drummed his ankles on the window sill, waiting for more. When it didn’t come, he swung around on his stool and pointed an accusatory finger. “You’re getting boring as hell.”

Aziraphale looked at him over his lenses. “Is hell boring?”

Crowley shrugged with his mouth. “Can be. Can be. Depends what’s called for, look, the actual issue here is that you need to go do something fun with me.”

“During tax season?” said Aziraphale. “Really? I suppose ‌I’ll simply drop all my responsibilities, then.”

“That’s it, yeah,” said Crowley, nodding encouragingly.

“No, Crowley.”

“Wha- why not?”

“Because who will do my taxes otherwise?”

“Wha - I - an accountant, Aziraphale, or maybe, think about this, don’t do them because you are a sodding angel.”

“Angels do their taxes,” said Aziraphale, carrying a one.

“Aaaaugh,” said Crowley, and pulled at his hair. “All right. All right. Look, okay, maybe that’s the problem. In fact, yeah, that’s definitely the problem.” He sat up straight, winding his ankles through the legs of the stool. “You aren’t an angel anymore.”

Aziraphale lifted one eyebrow as he tapped at his calculator.

“You aren’t. No more than I’m a demon.”

Now Aziraphale looked up. He pointed a finger over Crowley’s head. For a moment, a broken halo glowed there redly like an EXIT sign.

Crowley batted at the halo irritably; it dissipated into smoke and vanished. “Yeah. Fine. But that’s just supernatural. It’s not ‘demon,’ any more than your portable night-light there makes you particularly an-gel-ick.”

Aziraphale paused, sighed, put the accoutrements of taxes down on his desk and swung in his chair to face Crowley. “I do think there is something to be said for one being as one does.”

Crowley frowned, parsing that statement, and then shrugged. “Sure. Okay. But you don’t have to do boring things to be on the side of Good, you know. I absolutely don’t do boring things any more. I don’t have to. You remember that last time I‌ arranged a real, proper litterbug campaign?‌”

Aziraphale nodded. “You were unbearable.”

“I was, and now look at me. Cheerful as can be.”

Aziraphale sighed and leaned forwards, putting his elbows on his knees. “I suppose I‌ just worry. I mean, what if… you know, what if…”

“What if they want you back?” said Crowley, rather more perceptively than Aziraphale might have liked.

“Yes,” said Aziraphale, irritated. “Yes. I might have to go back to my duties. And I simply feel I’d better be prepared.”

He turned back to his desk and armed himself once again with his pencil. Crowley watched him, swinging slowly back and forth on his stool, sucking his teeth noisily.

“You know Gabriel doesn’t give a damn if you do your taxes.”

Aziraphale ignored him.

“In fact, there are quite a few bits in the Bible that are a bit explicit about how taxes aren’t actually required to be Good.”

“Been reading up, have you?” said Aziraphale icily.

Crowley tipped his head to one side. “Gotta be able to quote Scripture to serve my purposes, don’t I.” And he slid off the stool, grabbed Aziraphale’s chin in one bony hand, and turned him to face the shop window. “This is the day that the Lord hath made, angel. Let us rejoice and be glad in it, eh?”

Aziraphale winced as he freed himself from Crowley’s grip. “Stop quoting, I’ll get my tinnitus again.” He stared at the window and sighed. “It does look rather lovely.”

“That’s the spirit,” said Crowley, encouraged. “Let’s go have fun. Feed the ducks. Whatever you’d like to do.”

Aziraphale looked rather as if he wanted to wring his hands. “Oh, I don’t know… I’m quite certain I should actually finish my taxes, and then I’m sure I can find some miracles that need tending to, not to mention the campaign for the church roof–”

“Church roof,” said Crowley explosively, “look, Aziraphale, the sun will set without thine assistance–”

“You have been reading up,” said Aziraphale archly.

“Shut up. Get up. Come with me. No, don’t talk. You are going to come with me,” as Crowley pulled Aziraphale’s overcoat off the hook, “and you are going to have fun,” as he tossed it over Aziraphale’s head, “and we are going to do every little thing you’d like,” as Aziraphale shrugged resentfully into it, “or else I am going to make your life a living misery.”

“You aren’t doing that already?” said Aziraphale.

“Look,” said Crowley. “Ad campaign. All right?‌ No. No, better:‌ Facebook. Old books - why not use ‘em to decorate? Something from the 1800s would look fantastic on the up-to-date bookshelf, right next to the latest in vegan cookery and detoxifying. Pose with Wilde for the ‘gram. It could be a trend.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“I would, and have done, and you’d better watch yourself,” said Crowley, waggling a finger as he tugged the door open and waved Aziraphale through. “Every little thing that makes you happy today, angel. Everything. Or else.”

“But what if it’s - I mean, I‌ wouldn’t want to subject you to every dull–”

“Everything!”
