the absolutely insane moment when the narrative in the thief switches from “ooh look at Gen being incompetent and petty and deeply relatable” to “so Gen’s been robbing everyone blind and conning everyone since before this story began ;D” is so amazing like. you have no idea how long I spent screaming the first time I read through the story and missed everything and got to the ending and reread and screamed. and now, rereading, I’m sniggering ferally at every hint in the first 140 or so pages that Gen is, in fact, more competent than anyone would believe. Like in retrospect him going “well sounis I’ve slept in your treasure chamber. I have access to all your records. you think you have any idea what is going on” is so insanely obvious but all I noticed the first time around was Gen being petty, which is a huge and important part of his character and honestly good for him
