I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.

i think every fantasy lover should read the starless sea or the night circus at least once in their life. or just all people in general should.

erin morgenstern is the best weaver of words that i’ve ever had the honour of reading and i think everyone needs to experience her vivid storytelling at least once. cannot recommend her books enough.

sasukes genuinely so tragic and tortured as a character and almost no one realizes it even though its glaringly obvious. bro is literally a genocide survivor who was made to witness that awful pain on repeat by his brother who literally enacted it. and then he got groomed by a weird grown man and was shamed for ever wanting to leave the place where all his troubles began and for wanting to seek justice for his people. then after he found out that same place had actually planned the annihilation of his people he was still convinced to abandon his ideals and assimilate back into the village that was the origin of all he suffered. hes completely doomed by the narrative and its so miserable if you actually can appreciate him as a character

Aside from that, I'm interested in the syringe.

I mean, we've seen trinkets and/or items and/or artefacts that are paranormal (the Schwartzwald coin, Leitner's books, the homophobic vase, the table etc), but I don't recall encountering ones that seem to protect from the paranormal.

After Neil sold the syringe, paranormal activity skyrocketed. And we know he was very attached to it, and we know it's been historically used to treat illnesses.

He got in touch with Salesa, and got angry at the mosquitos for ruining his project—he was probably aware of the paranormal, at least to an extent.

It looks to me that the syringe is what protected Neil, right?

Then again, if that is true and he knew it, why would he sell it?

In Pageturner, when the statement giver mentioned Gerard buying Ex Altiora back from him, he said something about how "I would've given it away for free, but it felt like that wouldn't count...somehow".

Like, Ex Altiora is worth an x amount of money, and if in giving it away, the transaction isn't properly balanced, you're still going to be affected by its...weird properties.

(Which, unrelated, but Gerard burned that book immediately and no problem. when the guy from Section 31 tried to use a Zippo to do the same to the other Leitner book, he failed (and then killed himself gruesomely). Is that because he didn't actually own the book, and therefore couldn't do what he wanted with it? Since it was confiscated and not bought? Or does it purely have to do with Gerard being a little bit (or a lot) paranormal himself?)

Is that always true when dealing with items like that? Is that why Salesa coughed up so much money for the syringe?

I mean, Pageturner guy bought Ex Altiora for four bucks and he almost went insane. If he had bought it for its actual, deserved price, would he have been fine?

Anyway.

Ultimately, where I'm going with this, is that maybe there's a correlation between an item's history and its interactions with the paranormal.

Like, if I used a coin to make a deal with the devil, maybe that coin would go on to be a very, very negatively charged item.

Or maybe our perception of an item affects our interactions with the paranormal.

Then again, the more of this podcast I listen to, the more I generally get the impression that our perception in general affects our interactions with the paranormal.

Anyhow, I'm just trying to understand what the hell paranormal items are and how they function, but I feel like I've just been writing nonsense for the past half hour

Episode 44, Tightrope, and first of all, Gertrude's final "He must have been something...rather special." gave me the nastiest bout of goosebumps in a hot minute.

I caught the mention of Nikolai Denikin, the grandfather of the statement giver in Strange Music, and while the Calliope Organ made its appearance, nothing like that chest of dolls was mentioned.

Though, I'm assuming that might be why the kids survived the circus??

I'm also assuming that those contorted shapes of bodies in the "freak show" area are what the kids would have looked like if they didn't.

This episode freaked me OUT, I won't lie. It was so bizarre, begining to end. And I don't do well with bizarre.

Apparently Orsinov's circus is a known phenomenon, so mayhaps we will see more statements about it—an exciting prospect.

Now, I do wonder why Gertrude stopped recording statements. There's something in the way she read this one that makes you think she knows something you don't. Particularly in her additional notes.

Also, on who found the Jon's tapes: my money is on Martin, Not!Sasha and Elias, in that order.

Aside from that, were those two men mentioned in the beginning B&H? It was the first thing I thought of, but I dismissed it since this happened in, like, 1952. But then, like, who says there's limit on how old entities can get?

Edit: What are the chances that the Circus' performers are the dolls in that chest? Asking cuz I saw a comment pointing out that the clothes the clown was wearing are the ones the granddaughter found on the clown doll in Strange Music. Which, by the way, how the hell does one even notice this I'm shocked 😭
