I am not to speak to you, I am to think of you when I sit alone or wake at night alone, I am to wait, I do not doubt I am to meet you again, I am to see to it that I do not lose you.” ― Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass
A letter to my past lover
You know I miss you, not in a romantic loving star crossed lovers kind of way but the simplistic way where you miss the presence of a person. I don’t know why honestly. You did things I didn’t like, you said things that scared me but all the same I miss you. I miss the surprised smile you use to give me when I said things you didn’t expect. I miss your boyish laugh when you put me in awkward situation. I miss the stroke of your hands when I missed a strand of hair picking it up. I miss your arms and the way they would tighten when you held me in your sleep. I miss the way you teased me when I didn’t want to explain myself and I miss the silence you gave when you tried to make sense of my words. I don’t know every reason why but I know that I miss you. But I’m scared to miss you. Because in admitting in missing you is admitting that I care and caring is not something I do lightly. I miss you but I’m scared to tell you. You made me scared. You made me feel like I couldn’t miss you, you made me feel stupid for missing you each time I found out you’re carelessly smiling. I don’t share my bed but I’m worried you’re sharing yours. I miss your energy, your brightness, your joy, and ambitions. I respected them and saw the passion in your eyes and that made me miss you more even when you were inches away. I guess I miss not only you physically but I miss knowing I had your attention while I put on a show for you. I miss knowing I captivated your mind while culturally exploring yours. I miss you telling me your secrets and views on life while we drank coffee with no one else around. Do you remember that? Do you really remember the mornings we shared? Because I do. Nights I could spend with anyone but I miss our mornings together when I had no makeup on but you still looked at me like I was desired and enjoyable. I never realized what I was in need of until you showed me it. I miss you pulling on my hair when we would share a bed. I miss you marveling my body even when I flinched away. I miss you being able to respect my distance even when your body wanted more. I miss you holding my doors even though I knew you wanted a better view of the things you grabbed at night. I miss you breathing in my scent when you thought I wouldn’t notice and staring at me when you thought I didn’t pay attention. I miss the way you smiled when you looked in the mirror. I miss our first playful encounter with our bodies and still being able to laugh after. I miss making you laugh. I miss all of this but none of this really matter because how can it if I don’t know if you miss me.
Love,
the lover you forgot
