I’m officially going to start working next month
I just finished listening to Cyberwoman, yes, that Cyberwoman. The worst thing Chibnall's ever written.
There are some defenders of the story who say that if you can get over the costume, the story is actually good. I tried watching this episode several times the first runs but I always end up stopping or fast forwarding.
I attempted to watch again several days ago and gave up at the point where the doctor was fondling Lisa's metal boob. Just couldn't get through that, it was terrible all 'round.
Then I thought I would just side step the whole visual thing by ripping the audio only and listening to it on commute.
And it actually kind of works... I mean, as an audio story. It just needed a few audio descriptions. Honestly, I think it'd have been better as an audio.
I could imagine Lisa more of an unfinished Mondasian Cyberman (ala Bill -- and look at that another black character who is a cyberman. stares at Doctor Who writers) than how she was costumed in the show.
So... do I agree it's a good story?
No.
Or, at least I'm just not a fan of Torchwood itself as an organization. I think s2 is where it's at where the show stopped kidding itself about Torchwood being a competent and serious organization.
Also, as a fourth episode in the show, it doesn't work and when I looked at the bts in wiki, I wasn't at all surprised to find that it was meant to be a 7th ep. The team being all Firefly bonded, and then turning into a Ianto focused episode was far too early in its run, and even watching apart from the show, I was still very aware how much they don't know each other.
It does kind of prove though that, to quote a Buffy episode, Ianto Jones was love's bitch.
Guy is so thrown around his head about his love for Lisa it blinded him to everything else. Unfortunately, it's never clear if that was Real Lisa or Cyber programming doing anything it can to proceed with its programming. I honestly don't think it's a good story, and the silver lining here is that compare this with anything in s11 and it's a vast improvement. And actually from s1 to s2 of Torchwood there's a lot I liked better.
Negatives
Dawson has a contender for the Ugly Crying category and it goes to Ianto Jones.
Much as I want to forget it, the stupid sexy Cyberwoman costume does exist, and this is the reason thing: "The producers noted there were a history ofsexy, pneumatic, hydraulic womenin science fiction, and wanted totap into that.To make the cyberwoman costume, the props department wanted to make it assexyas they can. Director James Strong wanted to make the costume lookamazing, but threatening and scary as well."
U G H.
Of course the actress is going to be stoic. It's her job, she's not going to throw a fuss because she knows she'll either get fired or gain a reputation as difficult to work with. FFS.
I wanted Jackie Tyler to come in and slap every single one of them.
So, yep. This is the absolute nadir of Chris Chibnall's writing. May this be Chibnall's Jeremiah Crichton and never ever happen again.
