Ann had meant to mention her familiarity with the uneven and Hellish ground that the artist had just survived in order to reassure him, to let him know that he wasn’t alone despite how isolated he must have felt. To see him thinking he had hurt her by bringing his feelings up... it made a lump rise uncomfortably into her throat. She hated--truly hated!--seeing him like that, thinking that he had done something wrong when he hadn’t. Was the topic a painful one? Yes, but that didn’t mean that she had to shy away from it when the possibility was there for it to help someone else.
