A classic synoptic meteorology question, to explain how surface cyclones and anticyclones are related to curved flow in the upper atmosphere.

The orientation of the centripetal acceleration affects the strength of Coriolis, which causes the winds to be faster or slower than geostrophic in curved regions.

The result: upper level divergence (= upward motion) and convergence (=downward motion) at the inflection points in between!
