Catch-22:

"a despicable, insidious, infuriating person that made me desperately wish to reach through the pages and strangle him. in the ww2 bomber they work in, the protagonist, yossarian, is repeatedly trapped, terrified and fearing for his life while surrounded by enemy fire, and every fucking time aarfy will block his only access to the parachutes and emergency exit,

and when yossarian panicks and tells him to move, he pretends not to hear him. even when yossarian becomes so scared that he screams at him and hits him to try and make him go away, aarfy just stands there smugly saying ""i can't hear you, can you speak up?"" like after half a book of wanting yossarian to beat this guy up, he finally snaps and starts hitting him, and aarfy just KEEPS IGNORING HIM until he crumples in despair. this culminates in yossarian being hit by flak and bleeding so much he thinks he's dying, begging for aarfy to help him, while aarfy just keeps smugly pretending he can't hear him until he passes out

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

(trigger warning for rape) aarfy also has a deeply disgusting mindset about women. he shares a story about him and his friends gangraping a girl as if it's a funny story about a harmless prank, and near the end of the book he rapes and murders an italian woman. the worst thing is that as usual, aarfy is completely untouchable, and when the military police arrive while yossarian is confronting him, they arrest yossarian for being AWOL and don't give a shit about aarfy's crimes, letting him get away scot-free, and smiling smugly at yossarian as he's dragged away

'I have a better idea,' boasted Aarfy. 'Why don't we keep the three of them here until after the curfew and then threaten to push them out into the street to be arrested unless they give us all their money? We can even threaten to push them out the window.'

'Aarfy!' Nately was aghast.

'I was only trying to help,' said Aarfy sheepishly. Aarfy was always trying to help Nately because Nately's father was rich and prominent and in an excellent position to help Aarfy after the war. 'Gee whiz,' he defended himself querulously. 'Back in school we were always doing things like that. I remember one day we tricked these two dumb high-school girls from town into the fraternity house and made them put out for all the fellows there who wanted them by threatening to call up their parents and say they were putting out for us. We kept them trapped in bed there for more than ten hours. We even smacked their faces a little when they started to complain. Then we took away their nickels and dimes and chewing gum and threw them out. Boy, we used to have fun in that fraternity house,' he recalled peacefully, his corpulent cheeks aglow with the jovial, rubicund warmth of nostalgic recollection. 'We used to ostracize everyone, even each other.'

Aarfy is the scariest character in Catch-22 by far.
