Song Meaning: BE THERE FOR SUMMER
I wrote “Be There For Summer” in roughly 10 minutes at my kitchen table while my wife was upstairs getting ready for a family holiday party in January of 2014. I realized as I sat write that I was continuously referring to the upcoming holiday party as a “family reunion”. What bothered me immediately was that the family I was “reuniting” with lived only a short 45 minutes away, in the same state as I do. When I wrote the first line “Pennsylvania, how’s it going?” it was intended to be an inside joke for my personal enjoyment. The intention was to play with the fact that I live in PA and that I felt like I wasn’t really home due to the fact: I hadn’t seen my father’s side of the family in nearly a year. This created a deep sadness and sense of guilt in my soul. It no longer was an inside joke. It was a reflection.
The song then began to take shape and I began to target a number of elements in my life that I felt I may have been pushing aside or that I haven’t been “good to” for quite some time. Lost love, past romantic destinations, etc.
As I hit the first chorus I thought of how I personally deal with various “moods” as the seasons cycle through a year. Those who know me understand that I live to be outside, surrounded with friends, campfires, music, and good drinks. During the winter months I feel like my “flowers have been stolen”. So I pledged in the chorus of the song to not only gear up through the remainder of winter moving into spring, but to be there for the people I love as Summer was growing closer.
I hope “Be There For Summer” inspires you in the way that it has challenged and reminded me to be a better family member and a closer friend. Don’t let anything become your “winter”…
…just be there for everyone…. everyday.
