BIOGRAPHY --
Aaron Pierce was always labeled the problem child - as an infant, he was colicky; as a toddler, he was the type who just couldn’t stay still and always got into where he didn’t belong; and by the time he was an adolescent, it had become a self-fulfilling prophesy: any childish, boyhood antics were bemoaned as the casualties of Hurricane Aaron. And sure, maybe it was said with an affectionate sigh from his parents, but those kinds of things stick. His parents decided to have a second child when he was 9. They’d hoped a sibling might calm him down and teach him responsibility, but Aaron always saw it differently: he was being replaced. His parents were starting over with a new kid, and this one was going to be perfect. Of course, his parents never asked his opinion on the matter, and three months after his 10th birthday, Emily Pierce was born. At first, Aaron hated her. Either she cried too much or she didn’t cry enough and she was clearly just showing him up. She wasn’t even that fun - all she did was sleep and cry and poop all day. But his parents seemed to think that she was the best goddam thing to ever happen to the world. In fact, they were too busy doting over her to even worry about Hurricane Aaron anymore. And after a while, he came to miss even that. He had well and truly been replaced…
That feeling never really left him, even after Emily grew and slowly wormed her way under his skin. Sure, she was annoying, and he was resentful that he’d been forced to forfeit way too many nights to being her stupid babysitter, but she was his sister. And if you really pressed him, he guessed he’d have to say he sort of loved her… Maybe even a lot. By the time Emily was six, they had found a groove. He was the cool, mature 16 year old, and she worshipped the ground he walked on. He’d even found that she had her benefits. Because when he’d take her to the park, all the cute girls would flock around him to coo over her and tell him what a good big brother he was. It was on one such day that the unimaginable happened. He took his eyes off Emily for one second to flirt with Ashley Stewart, the most popular girl in school, and when he turned back, his sister was gone. Vanished without a trace. Hurricane Aaron had hit once again and this time it was really, really bad. His parents were crying on the couch; the police were asking him questions; and all he could think was he should have seen this coming. He never could do anything right.
He wouldn’t necessarily say it was his parents’ fault, but there was something about his early conditioning as ‘the fuck up’ that inspired a strange reaction in him. It was inevitable, almost, and so the guilt over his sister’s disappearance gave way to numbness, and his parents’ persistent tears made him angry in a way that drove him with a single-minded determination. It was all too clear now which child they had always loved more - he had the proof. But he would prove something of his own. He would prove that he could be two times the child Emily ever would have been. He started focusing in school more; he stopped fucking around. He became the picture perfect son - charming, polite, over-achieving. And the combination of his sudden personality shift and his seeming callousness over his sister’s disappearance and assumed murder, suddenly put him at the top of everyone’s list of possible suspects. He was, of course, proved innocent - because he was - but that didn’t stop the seed of doubt from being planted in everyone’s minds, even his parents. If he wasn’t a murderer, then at the very least he was heartless - probably a sociopath. But still he persisted. Even as the social pariah, he graduated high school as valedictorian, and immediately moved to the city to go to college at Colombia.
In the city, he could reinvent himself - become his own person outside of ‘Emily Pierce’s creeper older brother’ or even the eternal perpetrator of ‘Hurricane Aaron.’ He became Aaron Pierce - the charming editor at Penguin Random House. To a whole new world, his past never existed; he could just be who he wanted to be. Well, almost. Because as much as he pretended his sister’s loss didn’t affect him, it absolutely did. In such profound ways, he couldn’t even begin to express them all. Not as himself, anyway…. Starting in high school, he began writing under the pseudonym 'Belamy Rie’ - an anagram of the nickname he’d always called Emily: Emily Bear. And into his stories he would pour all the things he couldn’t say, creating twisting stories that usually involved themes of abduction and missing children. And when he joined Random House, he submitted his own work anonymously on a lark. And miraculously, it got selected. Unbeknownst to everyone, he became his company’s very own best-selling author. All his hard work had paid off. Playing the role of reclusive author, he secured himself the role of sole editor to all Belamy Rie projects, and so became one of the youngest and most successful in the company’s history.
