LOVE this painting by Aaron Douglas, who is one of my favourite artists. It’s full of mystery and metaphor.
Douglas was a painter active during the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural uprising amongst the African-American literati.
On the one hand, you see a man staring out of the window. Why? What can he see?
But then there’s the whole dimension of America during Aaron Douglas’ time, when African-Americans faced a great deal of discrimination. So the painting becomes metaphorical in a sense. The man in the painting is shut in a dark room, staring through the blinds at the propserity outside.
Great painting!

Aaron Douglas is often considered the leading artist of the Harlem Renaissance, also known as the “New Negro Movement,” a time in the early 20th century when literature, theater, music, and the visual arts were seen as a means to define a new African American identity. Instead of imitating European artistic standards, many Black American artists were interested in finding a distinctive cultural identity and were encouraged to study African art, which offered a different aesthetic source. Douglas was the first black artist to define a unique, modernist style that linked modern African Americans with their African heritage. The Prodigal Son is based on the biblical parable about a father and his two sons. The younger son asks his father for his inheritance and after wasting his fortune becomes destitute. He shamefully returns home, expecting his relationship with his father to be severed, but instead, his father welcomes him with open arms. The story is about redemption and forgiveness. Instead of depicting the story in conventional, biblical times, Douglas creates the look and feel of a contemporary Harlem nightclub. In this painting, the artist has portrayed his distinctive silhouetted figures - reflecting elements of Art Deco and Egyptian wall painting – set against a simple, yet bold, background. Our prodigal son is a slit-eyed modern man, dancing with two elongated female figures. Shooting out from every corner of the canvas are cubistically rendered signs of Jazz Age vice. Sounds and smells emanate from this dynamic image, pulling us into the scene. #VMFA #arteducation #AaronDouglas #AmericanArt #AfricanAmericanArt #ProdigalSon #Painting #Harlem The Prodigal Son, 1927 Aaron Douglas, American (1899 – 1979) Oil on canvas J.
