Before he became the King of Jordan, Abdullah II was a lifelong science fiction fan who especially loved Star Trek. In 1999, just months before he ascended the throne, he made a quiet cameo on the set of Star Trek Voyager during a private visit to the show. Because he was not a member of the Screen Actors Guild, he was not allowed to speak any lines, so the production team placed him in the background as a Starfleet science officer. The moment lasted only a few seconds on screen, but it instantly became one of the most unusual royal appearances in television history. At the time, Abdullah was serving in the Jordanian armed forces and was known inside military circles for his interest in technology and futuristic storytelling. His cameo happened shortly before the death of his father, King Hussein, which unexpectedly placed Abdullah on the path to ruling the kingdom. The brief scene has since become a small but beloved piece of Star Trek trivia. Added fact King Abdullah later launched Jordan’s first sci fi convention in 2014, helping grow the region’s modern film and comic culture.
