Riley, Abigail, and Ben (Figure One Last Puzzle Out)
After the investigation and the giant tsunami of news stories and the beginning of yet more crazy archaeological excavations that make Ben’s parents very happy, Riley gets his Ferrari back.
It’s nice, sure. But it’s not what Riley wants most. It’s not what he’s ever wanted most.
It’s a pale substitute for the intimacy that he wants, that he knows that he's not gonna get-
Except- Ben and Abigail start inviting him over for dinner once a week, because Ben has started moving back in with Abigail and they apparently want Riley over to spend time together. Abigail says something about realizing what they’d been missing, or something of the like- Riley hadn’t paid much attention after the rush of relief swept in that they weren’t just going to go back to him travelling far distances away from them, always too far away.
If there is one thing that the past three years has taught him, it’s that he’s not capable of such a thing. Not when life is dangerous, and full of the possibilities of something going wrong, and Riley is too weak to say no to time with them, even if he knows that any chance at intimacy died the moment that they got back together. The closest he’s ever going to be physically with Ben and Abigail from now on is going to be through layers of clothing, and he has to accept that.
Except- dinners become movie nights and Riley gets it, that they’re all still shaken after they all nearly died. He gets that they want to keep him close because they’re friends, and they went through a near death experience together, and that it is a natural instinct to want to keep him close.
He knows that this is going to end soon. That this is just some sort of trauma response to surviving near fucking death with them. That they’ll remember that he’s just the best friend, the third wheel, and that they want their date nights back, and they don’t need him around.
But for now, he’s going to embrace it with all that he has. He’s going to indulge in the way that Ben smiles at him, the way that Abigail grabs for his hand during horror movies (okay, that one might be more for his benefit than for hers), the way that they always seem to have snacks that Riley likes hanging around the kitchen, the way that they insist on him joining them to watch documentaries and old black and white movies.
And when Ben squeezes Riley’s hand and Abigail kisses his cheek goodbye, that thing inside of Riley’s chest ratchets higher and higher.
Because he wants more. He wants more that he’s never going to get.

Currently a 20 year old, about a year and month younger then the film we all are obsessed with.
Also just a college student who is working towards a degree in communications to be able to encrypt historical documents.
I spend my free-time writing anything from a romance to a supernatural. Or playing video games like roleplaying, shooters, or adventures.
I'm just here to enjoy posting one shots of the characters, my original character x national treasure, or just anything National Treasure related at this point.

Abigail's adopted daughter Audrey was a huge catalyst for Abigail to get away from Ben's Ben-centric tendencies. They are inseperable, even though Audrey gets teased and taunted with conspiracies about her mother's connection to the now-missing-presumed-dead-Ben-Gates and also the two discovered treasures and infamous Declaration Heist. Audrey is now 17 and has lived with Abigail most of their life.
Audrey and Abigail are very close, but it's no secret that her Uncle Riley has always been their favorite person. Even before Ben was out of the picture, Riley was stepping up and filling the role Ben should have. Riley is the fun uncle with a healthy fear of not crossing Abigail *too* far.
I see one of Riley's motivations in the films is to find some place, some people to belong with. He and Abigail are close in the films, and I don't think he had quite realized that he'd found that place yet. Audrey is the bridge that helps him realize it.
Audrey aspires to be a park ranger so she can teach others about history where it happened. They are a nonbinary lesbian (they and the president's daughter would be an item but the White House is understandably wary of anything to do with Audrey's family). Stan (Abigail's old creepy boss from the first movie) has a son about her age who is her biggest bully, but she doesn't let it stand.
