Marnie's father is Amon Kilgore and the Kilgore name in general has a long and sordid history among the general population. Demons are seen as other and often discriminated against by the other creatures in the universe. This is primarily because of her father and the Cult of Demona, in which he is the leader and founder.
Marnie was an unwanted female demon since males are larger and stronger so she was often ridiculed and abused by her father, who wanted a boy. She learned how to keep her head down and avoid his anger but when she came of age he pushed her into the Cult against her will.
She was forced to murder via goring with her horns a sacrifice to secure her spot in the Cult. She did so under duress of Amon and it's why she keeps her horns either cut down or short because of it.
A few years later he set into motion a marriage match for her, which she almost went through. Instead, she finally got the strength of will to go to The Council and turn him in with ample evidence she had collected over the years.
Marnie was a key witness in the trial and her father is locked up in prison for life vowing to make her pay if he ever is released.

TW: MENTAL HEALTH marnie was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder last year which explains a lot of how she acted over her teenage and early adulthood life. she has anger outburst, she gets incredibly violent at times and has the tendencies to be impulsive and reckless. but she’s now on her medication to help her with her BPD.

angel has been the only person to bring her back into her body, like sex is more than searching to feel good about herself with him. he is genuinely the first person she’s made love with not just fucked.
she is very stand offish and bitchy and afraid to make friends because she has major trust issues but underneath it all marnie is so, so, so soft. like she comes across as this sexually driven whore bitch but she just wants to be loved and wants to feel safe.

she was actually in a fight to the death when she was taken by the nautaloid and is real hush hush about the fact she was raised in a cult she wanted no part of (because she at least knows bhaalists are reviled).
Marnie can't swim. She's pretty scared of open water because of it. Being a demon she has denser bones which means they don't break as often but it make her heavier than she looks.
Marnie actually doesn't mind her tail being touched when she knows the person. She doesn't like it being tugged on in the slightest because it can hurt the base of her spine and her father used to yank on it when she was walking away.
Sometimes it does have a mind of its own though and it isn't uncommon for it to coil against someone if he's close to them.
Another reason Marnie is so bad at/chaotic with her fire magic is because it was a stubborn and subtle way to defy her father. Easy to brush off as 'I'm trying' when she actively wasn't.
She doesn't like her powers because she inherited the fire from her father.

Ninat
Gret for sure. He is the closest and most trusted person that he has around him. He didn't really anticipate getting close to someone, even in a platonic sense, going into his war with the Council.
For awhile he thought that Gret stuck around to help with things because he felt indebted to him for saving his life.
Ninat, despite his vanity and inflated sense of self, has a thread of self loathing in himself. So, if he had the opportunity to save Gret from certain death than he would because he thinks he has more worth living for.
Marnie
It would have to be her childhood best friend, her one and only friend that she had that Amon was quick to get rid of under mysterious circumstances. Lauri was one of the first people to get it through to Marnie that what was happening to her was not normal. Before then she thought it was normal for a demon family to treat her like that.
She's the one that introduced her to books she loves to this day.
During one of the ceremonies her father was performing to strengthen her powers he called on her to sacrifice someone. Long story short, she ended up using her horns to kill Lauri, which is why she tries to keep hers short to this day.
Lark
His brother. It's something his mother and his family has held against him even though it's been two decades since he's passed. It's the main reason he's so isolated away from his family despite still longing to be a part of it. He still sucks up to his mother because, ultimately, she has the last say if he's to be forgiven or not.
Still, he would give his own life to save him because he doesn't feel like he has enough going on in his life to warrant living when his brother could live.
Marnie doesn't sing around people for a reason, but gosh when she's comfy with someone and starts humming and dancing off beat and singing JUST SO AWFUL that means she's finally content.
