🏝- Could your muse survive on an uninhabited island all by themselves?

Ahahaha, definitely not. Racetrack is an urban creature. He can survive on his own perfectly well in a city, but he’d be totally hopeless on an uninhabited island. Nature? What the hell is that?

Yellow - what makes them happy? 

Money is almost always a good thing. A full stomach. Laughing with his friends. Sitting around with his friends after a big meal, everyone full and having a good time, and they have some money left over, and they’re going to sleep somewhere warm and comfortable tonight. Give him a good cigar on top of that and that’s basically his idea of heaven.

Purple - what is their favorite animal? 

Ferrets. They’re cute, smart, fuzzy--basically they’re cats but they’re stretched out and silly, and super playful. Race would totally like a pet ferret.

Chartreuse - Do they have any bad habits? 

More like does he have any good habits. He smokes, gambles, drinks. He mouths off at the drop of a hat. He’s not above lying or improving the truth to get what he wants. You could say he’s frivolous--he spends the little money he does have on things that most people would not consider a priority. He tends toward the cynical. He uses humor as a defense mechanism. There are probably more, but I think that’s enough to be going on with.

So at one point when I was answering questions for the Character Solidifying Meme, I answered the wrong number. I saved the draft in case someone else sent in an ask for it, but what the hell. Have it anyway, just for fun.

30. Are they holding on to something in the past? Can he or she forgive?

Race is predominantly a creature of the present. I suppose in a situation where a wrong goes unrecognized, un-rectified, and/or without apology he might hold a grudge about it. Generally, though, the present has enough going on in it that he doesn’t spend a lot of time focused on the past, especially things he can do nothing about.

NICKNAME: well, his name is technically a nickname. He doesn’t have a canon real name and I haven’t made one up yet.

2. Their mother? How do they think of her? What do they hate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have?

Okay, so I know that by now you know that I hc Racetrack as an orphan. Unlike the tenuous father figures in his life, I don’t think Race has any mother figure at all. So this is just a big, gaping hole, but he’s not always aware that it’s there because...he doesn’t have anything to compare it to. And since most of his friends are in the same boat, they don’t really make him feel the lack of a mother figure.

8. How does your character feel about religion?

Religion is for suckers. At best it’s a pleasant fiction, at worst it’s an actual scam.

12. How does their education and intelligence – or lack thereof - reflect in their speech pattern, vocabulary, and pronunciations?

Race has a pretty typical New York accent. His grammar isn’t the greatest. He says “ain’t” pretty often. He can probably fake his way through sounding more educated than he is if he really wanted to.

44. How badly do they want to obtain their life objectives? How do they pursue them?

Race’s life objectives are basically to be comfortable and do what he wants. Would he like more money to do more of that? Sure. Does he want it badly enough to seriously put himself out? Ehh, he’s pretty okay with how things are. He works hard when he needs to, and he’s not above pulling scams and cons, but as much as he wants a permanent box at the racetrack, he doesn’t want it at any cost. Particularly if that cost means sacrificing the freedom he enjoys at present.

50. What are the prevailing facial expressions? Sour? Cheerful? Dominating?

A wryly amused smile with a tiny calculating glint in his eyes.

Little Monsters Squad - Racetrack’s Bio

name: Racetrack (Race) Higgins

age: 15

species: mortal human

abilities/talents/skills: fast talking smartassery, calculates odds/risk assessment, good with people, can find the humor in almost anything

personality: Racetrack is a gambler, always playing the odds to get maximum reward for minimal effort. As a newsie, he sells all the papers he buys in the morning, but he doesn’t push himself to sell as many as he can the way some of the others do. He’s always chewing or smoking a cigar, and he can make one last for quite a while. He’s friendly, not exactly charming but somehow people find it hard to dislike him. Under his fast-talking and his attitude, he’s surprisingly responsible, especially where friends and family are concerned. He’s not a true leader, but he’s a good lieutenant, the kind of person who keeps an eye on things when the true leader steps away. His sense of humor carries him through almost any situation, except betrayal by someone he trusts. Race has no particular ambitions. He wants the freedom to do as he likes, provided that he also has enough to eat and, ideally, a comfortable place to sleep.

history: Race lost his parents as a toddler and ended up in a Catholic orphanage, which is where he learned to read, write, and do basic math. One of the caretakers took a shine to Race’s quick mind and, even then, smart mouth, and would take him on outings to the racetrack and occasional boxing match, which is where Racetrack learned to apply his mathematical skills to odds. Race soon became enamored of gambling in its many forms. He also acquired a taste for cigars, and developed a certain swagger. Eventually, he ran away from the orphanage and has been on his own ever since. He doesn’t particularly guard his history, but sees no reason to advertise it, either. He rarely thinks about it.
