"identify with pride and fear and greed and passion" Um those are such terrible things to identify with. And omg did you really try to act like him being a bumbling moronic man in ships isn't sexism? Do you think manchildren in sitcoms aren't still sexist wastes of space draining emotional resources from women? That's not any more progressive. It's not equal or loving. I'm not even touching the mental weakness part, since this character reflects so badly on people with REAL mental problems.

The part where we mentioned ‘toxic quagmire’? 

That would be the sexism part. You know, with the sitcoms and the dramas and the cardboard dialogue. 

Unless you thought I meant a literal toxic quagmire in which case we gotta go somewhere else. Like Nevada. 

And yes, Thorin’s not a perfect representation of people with mental illnesses. No single character is- mental illness  varies widely, far beyond the DSMV which is by itself problematic. I have problems with the Gold Sickness being perceived as a mental illness anyway, because its intended perception as such was all Jackson’s invention. Regardless of how you feel, someone out there identified with that in Thorin, and all your ‘I’m not gonna touch thats’ won’t stop them from that identification. 

I think you’re probably a human who thinks only in absolutes, Anon. All or nothing. Go big or go home. Salt or pepper, never both. 

Which makes this a very unfortunate conversation caus’ I’m just- not. 

Pride, fear, greed and passion are not absolutes. They vary in degrees, and a mediocrum of all in measure makes humans what they are. There’s no shame in identifying with those traits, or altering them within yourself to help fit your life. The problem, as was clearly demonstrated by our good friend Prince Thorin Oakenshield, is when you let one or two dominate.
