I fell down a rabbit hole after that "whole language reading" issues post and have, much to my horror, learned I was wrong. Somehow I was unaware that this was a system that took off like crazy after the late 60's and had been a war raging with educators and politicians alike on which system was best to be taught. Every day I feel so incredibly lucky that my school system in my tiny town, in my deep south state, had their heads screwed on right when it came to education. I feel so incredibly lucky that I had family members who, despite any flaws, valued education and aiding my education before (and after) school.

The Scholastic Book Faire and Accelerated Reader programs were huge in my schools! Learning that many school systems that embraced the whole language reading style of learning wouldn't even assign books to read has left me in a state of shock. Knowing this was going on at the same time I got my starting education in a tiny town in the middle of Tennessee has left me feeling like the luckiest little rat alive.

#Our English classes were so legit good #diagramming sentences was taught so early that I always looked forward to those quizzes down the line because it was basically a free 100 #same with assignments tasked with comprehensive reading assessment #for whatever lucky as hell reason my school system cared a lot about reading comprehension #and it was drilled into us so ridiculously early until the day I graduated HS #Thanks Accelerated Reader program I always loved you and I got so many prizes thanks to you #the plus side to this horrible rabbit hole #I had assumed the uh recent events in the world and covid were the reason for why literacy had dropped so hard #but it turns out to be the opposite!#apparently parents having to sit at home with their kids during reading lessons had a huge wakeup call that their children were #a little more on the Not side of literate #and that seems to be jumpstarting a wake up call that these teaching methods are absolute shit #I will always happily admit when I am wrong and I was very wrong in my assumption #but I'm also happy to see my original assumption may be at least changing some minds on how to teach literacy #Though now that I think back on all of this #I always thought that the other schools in the area calling us 'Gaywood Snobs' was mean #but I thought my classmates being 'Gaywood Snobs' back and calling everyone else stupid was also petty #I noticed the difference when I started HS that a lot of the others seemed behind once the county school joined the city school pool #but I was kind of a sap that didn't want to judge and still believed it all boiled down to football/basketball rivalry #now though with this new knowledge and finding out I'd been in a stupid lucky little bubble...#Uh... thanks Mr Caywood for having high as fuck standards for your K-8 I owe you my life #I guess we really were the Gaywood Snobs...#tho I still think it's mean I just think it's mean in another way #they should have had the same education we had #that's unfair as fuck to kids raised in an area small enough to be zoned for the same HS #to have such a huge disparity in education #absolute ass

with all of the bullshit going on with HBO max and warner bros rn, plus the way the majority of the good animated shows have been canceled or shortened in the past few years, im honestly really worried for the future of animated shows. i grew up with a bunch of good ones like adventure time, regular show and mlp: fim, all of them were amazing shows that had 8+ seasons plus more content (movies, games etc) and i feel like we just aren't getting this quality anymore in animation. i love TOH, but it got seriously shortened and the quality of it could suffer because of this, amphibia was kinda mid imo, infinity train was fucking INCREDIBLE but it literally got HALF OF ITS INTENDED RUN TIME. and now it's getting kicked off of its only streaming service and cn is removing any trace of it ever existing. im so genuinely upset and angry, infinity train and other great shows like it mean so much to people, me included and the shows and their creators are being treated like dirt rn. i just can't think of any understandable reasons for why HBO is doing this. it makes me so goddamn angry
