Absolute Green Arrow #1
Absolute Green Arrow
Let's talk about it, because for me this has been my most anticipated comic of the month if not the year, and considering that this issue outsold Absolute Batman #1 it seems it's a lot of other peoples too.
be warned for any spoliers and more explicit media.
I would also like to note that just like many other Green Arrow books and even other titles in the Absolute Universe this boolk is politcal, so do with that info what you will
Now for those of you who don't know back during Absolute Evil, we learn that Oliver has started to become the "Green Arrow" due to wanting to kill or deal with a certain Island owning Pedo, which then leads to Hawkman killing him.
Now currently he seems to be a mix of both the Green Arrow and the Spectre from dc, with a dash of Michael Myers.
First thing we see the Green Arrow or in this world the Longbow Killer (Which I believe is a ref to a prev Oliver Queen story where he is written to be a lot darker, kills a lot more, and more specifically kills a lot of rapist) is taking out Jubal Slade aka the Island owning Pedo. He then destroys or mutilate's every part of his body that he used or couldn't keep away from minors/the people he assulted
We follow Dinah Lance and we learn a couple of things about her. She used to be a MMA fighter known as Black Canary. Now she acts as a bodyguard for the rich and famous as a way to get money in order to what she needs to help get the meds that her father needs. It just also happens to be that she lothes her job and the people that she works for, because at the end of the day. Rich people often don't care about anyone other then themselves.
and this underlying story broke my heart a little I'm going to be honest. To watch her struggle to get the money for his meds and to see it be made even worse but a fucken richman and to watch her father blame himself for having these issues.
From a story view I thought this was all very interesting, how she is tuck between a rock and a hard place. She doesn't want to work for these awful and sick people, but she doesn't have a choice. I think seeing how this effects her job and how she works in later issues will be interesting as they have already shown that they are will to mess with her life and hold her fathers issues and their finacial struggles over her so she does what they want.
We get to a list of three possible people they think could be the green arrow, who have pretty big ties to green arrow
Roy Harper aka Olivers first sidekick aka speedy and later known as Red Arrow or Arsenal
Mia Dearden aka the second speedy (I will say I'm excited to see her in comics as I feel we haven't seen her in proper stories or any major appearances in a while and I hope this will be a good step to see more of her)
Tom Hallaway aka the Spider
I feel like any of these could be increadbly interesting. I've seen some people wonder if it will be undead Oliver or even someone like Connor Hawke.
I loved getting to watch as the Rich corrept Billionaries who get away with any and everything are now being forced to deal with the extreme reprecutions to their actions and the fight scenes are truly spectacular with overall beautiful art and colors
And I’m obsessed with the overall mystery that can be seen through the story so far.
I’m very rarely as excited for a next issue as I am now
Absolute Green Arrow #6 by Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque. Variant covers by (1) Leirix and (2) Nimit Malavia. Out in October.
"Green Arrow. Black Canary. Solomon Grundy. Hector Hammond. Their paths violently converge in a bloody finale one of them won't walk away from as the identity of the Green Arrow Killer is finally revealed. But it's only the first of many surprising revelations as the stage is set for the next audacious chapter in the saga of the newly extended Absolute Green Arrow."
I feel like some people are misinterpreting Absolute Dinah. I don't really see her as a bland neutral party or reader stand-in at all, and I feel like you have to ignore the majority of her dialogue to interpret her as such?
Dinah spends much of #1 referencing studies showing how much rich people suck. She hates billionaires with a burning passion. She's upset and hates herself so much for resorting to protecting them because she needs to pay for her dad's medication. She doesn't think that the lower classes can do anything about it. She's also against murder. She's also scared that she's happy to see billionaires suffer.
These things can and do coexist. There are so many people who are just like this. You probably know someone like this! Maybe you're like this! So many people are fully aware of how shitty the world is, who hate the assholes with all the power, but don't think we can do anything about it. And yes, are still against murder even if it's the worst people on the planet. She can be against murder and anti-capitalist.
Being against murder doesn't erase everything else she's thought in the last 3 issues. It sure as hell doesn't make her liberal as I've somehow seen people complain. Come on, liberals are NOT that aware. Maybe she was a liberal cop once upon a time, but you think she's one NOW??? Now, she's the pinnacle of disillusionment and working class fatigue!
Maybe by the end of this comic, she will have come around and agreed that murdering billionaires and rapists is good. Maybe she'll remain too afraid of her own bloodlust towards them to go through with it, or stick to her guns in seeing murder as purely bad no matter who does it. Neither makes her political opinions 'lesser' than the (likely male) Green Arrow.
Dinah is an ex-cop who was likely radicalized by something her cop mom did that shook her and her dad. She's a lower class woman who had to quit a job she loved and suck up to rich people to pay for her dad's meds. She dated what seemed to be a fellow socialist who wanted to make the world a better place and they broke up because he cheated on her, and then he became rich. She scrolls on Tiktok to see people's reaction to Slade's death. She consumes online studies about psychology, and theories about her exes' death. She tries so hard to suck it all up and bear it, to hide her true feelings when she's on the job. The first time we see her talk much on the job is in her fight with Mia.
Her and Mia are foils. Mia quotes studies she read online, just like Dinah. She feels the same way as her. She just doesn't hide it the way she does. In fact, she's extremely vocal about it, in real life and online. She even has the same sort of job Dinah used to have and liked. They go off the topic of Oliver's death pretty quickly, because they both know what's really going on here. They don't ignore it. And this conversation instantly leaves Dinah's partner extremely uncomfortable, because he either hasn't realized it or just wants to ignore it. (Genuinely, this moment is my favourite in the series so far)
She's not a generic plot device whose only point is to get radicalized by Green Arrow, tell you that you should be against murder, ease you into the radical message of the story, convince dc to publish the comic, or whatever other excuses people have come up with. She is a full fledged character! Just because the story centers around political messages doesn't mean that the characters in the story aren't written like real people with their own lives and opinions.
And isn't one of the biggest compliments about Abs GA that it portrays the way working class Americans feel about our economic situation really well? Please explain to me why we can't extend this opinion to the female protagonist who is spearheading it.
Maybe, just maybe, you're supposed to pay attention to the protagonists thoughts that are being actively shown to you!
mia ilysm
This is fucking tasty. I love women.
Just read Absolute Flash 18 (and B-man 23 + GA 4)
OH MY FUCKING GOD???
WHY CANT WE HAVE NICE THINGS?!?! LEAVE THIS CHILDREN ALONE PLEASE 😭
Spoilers and ranting below
It's these parts that make me really like Absolute Green Arrow. How normal people feel about the state of the world with all the shit going on. That's good. But I'm really struggling to get invested in the actual main story of Dinah hunting the Longbow Killer
