Okay this post includes spoilers of the newest MOTM update below cut, so thereās your warning lads
LETS TALK ABOUT ORTENSIA IN THE MUGMAN DREAM SEQUENCE AND HOW PEOPLE REACTED TO THAT
As a quick recap, in the newest myth update weāve gotten, there were several dream sequences from Bendy, Boris, Cuphead and Mugman, these being surreal sequences showcasing the current mental state of each character in a more metaphorical sense or possible situations theyāve been through on their lives.
Now, I will be talking about specifically about the Mugman dream sequence, since this was a highlight due to it seeming much more like a memory related dream rather than being droopy and metaphorical, and also the fact that Ortensia was in it.
In the dream, we see young Cupbros(who mind you during this time they were known criminals and were defined as dangerous due to the soul debtors theyāve murder due to their deal with the devil), running into a very young Oona who got lost and was crying for her mom(oww poor thing T-T).
The cup bros attempt to cheer her up so that sheās no longer upset, which to their credit it did work.
The issue comes when young Oona attempts to grab a bottle of DIP(which as we know is a VERY dangerous and lethal chemical) that Cuphead was carrying on him.
Luckily Cuphead grabs her and makes her stay away from the DIP, but this is when things get complicated.
Ortensia walks into the scene, sweeping Oona away from Cupheadās grip and pushes him away, since yk, theyāre known as dangerous criminals that relentlessly murder others, so yeah, not the type of people youād want your kid to be around with.
Unfortunately, the situation in the dream escalates very quickly, Cuphead getting injured REALLY bad, that shit was brutal, poor kid :(
But also Ortensia called over some cops that pinned down Mugman, which yeah, itās really fucked up considering these kids are like twelve or something and werenāt really going to do anything malicious.
Now with our recap of the events in this dream sequence, let me talk a bit about how commenters and rebloggers reacted to this scene.
I have seen a concerning amount of people treating Ortensia very horribly due to this, blaming her for this situation and even accusing her of using Oona as bait to catch the cupbros, which I would agree that itās really fucked up and a horrible thing to put your own daughter and some kids through.. IF IT WASNT FOR THE FACT THAT THIS IS A FUCKING DREAM.
Now donāt get me wrong, this situation has definitely happened in the cupbrosās lives, considering how much more aligned with the reality of their world it is compared to the other dreams that are much more abstract and subjective, but this is still a dream nonetheless.
Dreams in media are often times used to depict the characterās mental state or be a metaphor for what theyāre goin through at the moment, an in the case of those in which are pulled from possible traumatic memories, they depict what the character whoās our POV felt at that moment, rather than what actually happened.
In this dream we can tell that this has the effects of not being fully realistic, given how quickly the situation escalates and how the cops literally show up out of thin air, not to mention some background details such as a poster of Bendy and Dandy with their faces switched, for example(I canāt put the image cause I reached the limitš).
Not to mention the very important fact about this that I see none of the people going against Ortensia is the fact that this is told from Mugmanās POV from when he was a child, who as far as we know, is a complete stranger to her.
The main focus of this dream was how Mugman felt at the time and the thing that stayed with him is being tricked into helping a little girl so that the cops could get him and his brother, who again, GOT HIS SHIT ROCKED IN FRONT OF HIM(also tbh Iām doubting if that injury actually happened, given that Cuphead looks so similar to BROTHER in here and Mugmanās current state wouldāve most likely influenced his dreams).
In Mugmanās eyes, he was baited into kindness, which would explain why a lot of people had the impression of Ortensia being actually terrible, but thatās the thing. We are trusting the dream of a possible memory from when our character was a child on how a woman, who he did not know AT ALL, acted when she was still in her normal toon flesh(In order to not say when she was alive cause she clearly still is, just that now sheās a giant searcher).
So judging Ortensiaās parenting and overall behavior before our current day based on this very unreliable depiction of her is just foolish, especially when thereās people out there who see her doing one bad call and are now claiming that theyāre glad sheās dead or that they want to beat her up because of that.
It reads to me that the reason why so many people lashed out at how Ortensia acted here is because sheās been curated to be this perfect saint who only did good deeds and never hurt a fly before she died tragically when in reality, thatās simply not possible.
Thereās no such thing as a dead person being perfect before they passed away, everyone has bad behaviors, did bad decisions or read a situation incorrectly and thatās no different for deceased people. Thatās no different for dead women. Thatās no different for Ortensia.
It truly disgusts me how much misogyny and puritan behavior has leaked into this community and how people react to a character making a bad decision, even when they didnāt intend to be malicious or even in this case where thereās a chance this didnāt even happen in the first place and thereās a possibility this memory went down differently.
Just because Ortensia isnāt a saint doesnāt suddenly make her the devil incarnate and I find it very concerning how quickly people are jumping into making comments about being relieved at their death and calling her a bitch, just because she made a bad decision on someoneās DREAM.
Even if this did happen, think about it, these two brothers are known criminals that have murdered countless people, Ortensia only knows that information. She then loses sight of her daughter in the street and the moment she sees her little girl again, one of those killer kids is holding her up in the air with a bottle of a chemical in his hand that could melt her skin off just by splashing her with it.
Your child is being grabbed by a known murderer who has a fatal weapon in their hands. What would you do in that situation?
Thatās all I could conjure up as of now, excuse me if some stuff is structured kind of weird I did this very quickly because I was genuinely concerned at just how quickly so many people switched up on Ortensia just because of this scene alone.
Also Iām tagging @nortsauce and @flygutzz since I know you two like to see analysis of your comic, this is mainly directed as the audience, this is not on neither of you at all, this update was absolutely beautiful I loved everything about it and Iām very disappointed at the response that Mugmanās dreams sequence had, keep making dope shit!!
