Okay so...

Esme would definitely have an ability imo and it's taken me a hot minute to figure out what exactly it would be, but I've just realised.

She would be able to withstand manipulation/mind control powers because of her experience with Charles and the mental and emotional abuse he put her through.

She's lived an entire life being gaslit and lied to that when she becomes a vampire, she gains the ability to evade psychic influences. With characters such as Jane, she is still able to do this, but after a prolonged amount of time she will eventually succumb to Jane's ability. It just happens that she is able to stave off such attacks much longer and efficiently than her counterparts.

Tell me your James and Frank headcanons uwu

OH THEYRE BAD LOL

Well not all bad but I really don't think they had the greatest relationship (I sorta wrote ab it once but didn't get too much into it)

I think overall, it's not exactly strained but

they arent close. They only really had eachother while James was growing up so they do have some jokes between them and can work together and have a few things in commone (music mainly tho james hates the fucking beatles even if he doesnt say it) its not just beacuse James is super passive either. They've had some nice times cleaning out apartments or drinking. Frank likes to call him nicknames he hates but its..meant to be joking. Hell Frank gave him his coat, and whatever James will say he won't get rid of it beacuse it does mean something to him.

That said Frank is, distant. And not the nicest person, he finds it funny to be mean and sometimes it is kinda funny but often it boarders on cruel bc he goes too far, and James especially doesn't stick up for himself. Frank is also what one might call brutally honest, in the sense that hes very willing to tell anyone and especially James that he doesn't approve or is downright is ashamed of him bc James isn't anyones idea of masculine. Frank doesnt like to take responsibility for things he knows hes done wrong and occasionally just doesn't want to deal with things so he has been known to lie, pretend not to know what James is talking about, tell him hes making things up or exagerating. All of these things are made worse by Frank's unfourtunate alcoholism, and the fact that he was even more distant and even downright neglectful when James was growing up. It was kind of an open secret that Frank didnt like his son and wasnt inclined to be all that nice, he mellowed some with age or rather when James was bigger than him but still. (Not even getting into all the...umbilical cord stuff...and yes..james knows what it is, he just prefered not to think about it.)

I think mostly, Frank was kind of draining for James to be around, he still made the effort out of something like obligation, but he wasnt exactly enthusiastic. And once Mary got sick, well, there was some time that Frank was more present (Mary didnt like Frank, so he only went to visit her once) but after that he was just as distant an unavailable as ever. And the last time they spoke, James and him got into a fight beacuse of how insensitive he was to the situation, james saying he didnt want to talk to.him again and storming out, and Frank never bothering to make amends. Frank never saw him again after that night.

Headcanon;

I like to think that in Fantine’s modern verse, Félix didn’t physically abandon Fantine and Cosette, but emotionally. She met an older man as barely an adult herself, was smitten with him, got pregnant (which, okay, that wasn’t planned, but this could work out), except when she eventually moves in with him she starts to see his true colours.

He enjoys drink and drugs a little too much; he has an unpredictable temper which after Cosette’s arrival just gets worse.

Fantine’s stuck in this house which he reminds her regularly is his, a crying baby and an abusive partner. They eventually get out, but they end up homeless and in refuge. It’s no place for a child. So the two of them struggle for a while as Fantine looks for a job and a more permanent place for them to stay. 

She doesn’t press charges against Félix, she doesn’t think she can, but she makes sure he can’t find either herself or Cosette.

Cosette has nightmares as a toddler, but soon enough she becomes a happy child. Fantine doesn’t let Cosette have social media nor a phone, it’s too much risk; she knows how charming Félix is, she doesn’t want Cosette falling for her father’s charm when she could get hurt and manipulated. Besides, he was never a father to her.

Do u ever see a character who like...doesnt have and kind of canonical family/backstory but based on their personality or their habits or characterization you can just Tell they had abusive parents

Wishlist;

Charles leaves for w.ar, and E.sme finally gets to do everything she's ever wanted; live in peace, earn a living (maybe not as a teacher, but hey, making w.artime propaganda isn't too bad when it pays).

And in the time that Charles isn't there, E.sme meets, befriends and falls in love with someone else who actually treats her right!

It starts off small, she finds it easy to hide— she has to hide it; her husband is fighting a w.ar, after all! But how Charles treats her is hardly left to the imagination to the town's population.

Soon, she's having a full blown affair and they're planning their future. She's saving enough money to leave with them and settle elsewhere, but before she can do that, she's informed that Charles is coming home.

She tries to break things off, but even with him home, her lover manages to catch her in the in-betweens. When he's at work, or out with friends. She finds safety and healing in her lover's arms.

And then she gets pregnant and she doesn't know who the father is. If she had a choice, it wouldn't be Charles, but he doesn't let her say no. (If her lover is a woman, she's begging Esme to leave with them and they can raise this child together.)

And then, one day, Charles catches them together and they have to flee with nothing but the clothes on their back.

Headcanon;

When J.asper arrived, E.sme couldn't quite put her finger on just what it was about him that made her feel so uncomfortable. It wasn't just his posture or his background, it was something else that had disturbed her subconscious, but she couldn't grasp exactly what that was.

Until she heard him walking.

She had become accustomed to the footsteps of the other members of her coven, but J.asper's had taken her off guard. His steps were unevenly rhythmic— stomach droppingly familiar.

And then it clicked.

When C.harles returned home from the W.estern F.ront, he returned with a cane and a limp. Part of her felt happy that he had sustained such an injury, but she soon found out that it did little to slow him down when he didn't want it to.

The click of the cane against the floor struck the forefront of her mind as urgently as the cane itself had struck her. And suddenly Esme understood the fear that accompanied J.asper.

Obviously she didn't hold that against J.asper, but it took a few years to become comfortable with it all. Now it doesn't bother her at all, but the first few months and couple of years after he joined them, Esme struggled more than she would care to admit.

What we don't talk about regarding Meg in L.ND is how her mother becomes the villain, even beyond E.rik himself.

Mme G.iry is an incredibly smart woman and it's established in P.OTO how smart she truly is. Except in L.ND, her intelligence becomes cruel. She knows enough to suggest what Meg should do to get the gears turning regarding the establishment of P.hantasma. Have Meg curry favour with the press, with the investors; use her charm to appease them, but never telling her when to stop.

Encouraging her daughter to lose every single boundary she has and act surprised to learn that she's ended up in these men's beds.

It's almost an unspoken truth between them, but something too painful to truly acknowledge— particularly when Mme G.iry has all but encouraged this reality.

So they skirt around it.

And then when C.hristine comes to P.hantasma, Mme G.iry seems to already know E.rik's plan. She is cruel about that, too. An excited Meg ready to greet a long lost friend instead had seeds of doubt placed in her mind by her mother; not just seeds of doubt, but outright malicious remarks meant to pit the two against each other.

And yet Meg remains optimistic, so thrilled to see her friend after so many years apart.

I just don't think this dynamic is ever acknowledged enough. Sure, E.rik's outright ignorance of Meg is an issue in itself, but the years of n.arcissistic a.buse by her mother is what has truly eroded the Meg we all knew and loved in P.OTO.
