I had the weirdest epiphany the other day.
I wasn’t born evil. I wasn’t born bad
So freakin weird to realize that.

Do you ever notice something really mundane like the washing machine completing its cycle or the fridge humming in the background or the person you live with or your pet make a noise or you're just lying in bed and realise there's no yelling or anger threatening your safe place and you're hit with that "that's MY washing machine doing MY washing that I put on and this is MY home with the person/animal I love and care for, I made it, I got out, I'm alive and safe and out of the abusive environment that almost ended my life" realisation that everyone else seems to take for granted?? Bc same
Am I ever going to stop focusing on the past?
It happens every time I get especially hormonal, specifically during PMS and ovulation. Not even just the yelling, or the emotional neglect, or the physical intimidation. The entire experience of being treated like a dumb little kid even as an adult by people who just expected me to know how to get by in the world. It impacted my mental state to the point that most of the lasting friendships I had as a child and younger adult were with people who treated me the same way. Never having any way out of it because I never made enough money, I ended up with very few local friends and none I could crash with long-term, and was terrified of ending up homeless and probably dead.
Please...just let me forget. I don't want to remember anymore...
One of the first realizations I made when I first learned that I was actually abused was that, no, not everyone considered my life "normal".
Some events that I thought were just regular family things actually horrified people. It made them angry on my behalf.
I was shocked, because I could feel no such feeling towards the events. I had become numb.
It felt like all my life I've been told that oranges are sour and other people just tolerate it better because they don't wince when they eat it.
.. Only to find out that I was actually holding a lemon. I was so confused. It was hard to wrap my mind around it. My orange was a lemon? But...why? How? Is the sky purple now too?
Any other abused kids have trouble watching movies/consuming media abt the Power of Familial Love, and just want everything to be romantic all the time bc that form of love is so much more achievable and idealized bc you've convinced yourself familial love is out of your reach
This started as a comment on a Pinterest post, but it's too long...
How about neglecting a TBI on top of (your parents neglecting your mental health)? I was 20 and had sustained the TBI from being hit by a car and hitting my head on the road. I was in a coma for a couple of weeks and in rehab for a couple more, and my dad gave me grief because I kept forgetting to do my speech therapy exercises (yes, bc a head injury will make your memory worse). He thought I just wasn't trying. I felt like I had to keep making it seem like I was okay when I wasn't. I did school and worked a crappy job I hated for nine years...it took me 8 years to graduate. I had no direction, no purpose...I just made it seem like I was okay bc my parents needed me to be.
This is a meme I made about my parents, and honestly, it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever made.
