Ronnie’s Story
In the journal article, Standing Alone in Judgement, the death of a 2 year old was caused by his own cousin Ronnie, (who just turned 11 years old). Surprised? I was too when I first read the journal entry. It just goes to show that the abuser can be any age. In this case it is child abuse because a child beat up a younger child. It’s sad to hear stories like this because a child can learn from experience from the household and implicate the same behaviors.
Despite Ronnie’s age, he was still tried as a juvenile or an adult. According to the article, “The Developmental Audit was the key piece of evidence to support the case that Ronnie should be treated as a child rather than as an adult”. Ronnie was left in charge in the household to watch over irritated, hungry, crying babies. Who leaves an 11 year old in a house to babysit other children? Where are the parents? Anyways, the story leads to the state believing this was just a terrible accident that gone wrong. Still, the death of a young 2 year old girl needed justice. Someone needed to pay. Someone needed reformation, instead of punishment. And that was Ronnie.
Furthermore, psychologists traced the etiology of Ronnie’s interview sessions. The article also stated that, “Between the ages of 5 and 10, these experiences were frequent and intense. His development clearly meets the definition of developmental trauma disorder”. Over the past 11 years, without a doubt Ronnie was experiencing impact of the cycles of abuse. Both his parents were abusive. His father physically abused him, meanwhile his mother emotionally abused him with her own problems. He also had PTSD from witnessing his mom being sexually abused by his uncle. There was a ton of neglect and has significantly turned him to become a tormented young person. It hurts to read these type of stories or hear about them. In this story, ONE out of the children in the house, who was so young was taken from this world. The young two year old died in an unsettling disaster that could have never happen if one adult had their act together and held their promise to their duty of being a parent.
Terrier Tips: Make Summer 2016 Proactive!
Happy Summer 2016, Terriers!
You did it! Another finals week conquered, another school year coming to a close.
Although the Student Ambassadors are thrilled to see more sunshine and a break from school work, there’s always a bittersweet feeling to the end of the year. Four of our amazing team members will be graduating (Allie, Bri, Caroline, and Harini), and before we know it, fall will be here! To make the most of your summer, follow these tips to stay on top of your Terrier game, even when sipping lemonade by the pool!
1. Handshake
Replacing our old platform of BU CareerLink, we are so excited to welcome all terriers to Handshake, our new online career database! Handshake will be updated all summer long, with postings from employers around the Boston area (and beyond!) looking for interns for the fall! Didn’t get that summer job you were dreaming of? Never fear! Fall is often a key time for employers, and they’ll be looking for accomplished students who can balance a full course load and a part time position. Make sure to check back throughout the summer months for availabilities and dream positions!
2. Keep that Resume- and LinkedIn Updated!
With all the beach trips, movie marathons, and nights spent under the stars, it can be easy for summer to become a time where you forget to update that Master-Word-doc resume you have (with all your experiences, honors, community service, and hobbies)! Make sure to jot down some key factors of what you’re doing this summer, so when fall rolls around, applying for that position you want will be a million times easier. It can be surprisingly hard to remember the small details of exactly what you did at your internship, so keeping track of your responsibilities (whether they be coffee runs or improving your presentation skills) is important. And don’t forget about LinkedIn! It only takes a few minutes to update your profile, and a recently edited and improved LinkedIn is always a bonus with employers.
3. Keep Updated on Everything BU with our Twitter!
Student Ambassadors Lauren, Harini, and Shine are so excited to be here at BU this summer to speak about the services of the CCD and ERC to the Class of 2020 at orientation! We’ll be keeping our twitter updated with orientation facts, terrier tips, and ideas of how to beat the dog days of summer in Boston! Make sure to follow us to keep up to date with all things CCD and ERC!

And Finally...
From all of us here at the Yawkey Center for Student Services, thank you all so much for our most successful year yet, and we can’t wait to be back for Fall 2016!
