Matthew
I feel my head pounding as I lift it off the cold hard surface it’s been on all night. The room is barely visible with the shades of the bay window shut. I feel around with my hands and knock into a glass on the counter in front of me. Have I sat at the bar all night?
My eyes droop down as I step off the stool. Stumbling, I realize I am completely naked. Instinctively, I move to cover myself only to be reminded I am alone in the dark.
It’s arrival day.
I go back to the bar and hit the button that illuminates the room in different rainbow neon hues. The stools glows bright red and the lava lights embedded into the walls allow me to see my watch. It reads it’s around 5 o clock in the morning which will allow me to sneak back into my room without embarrassment.
How much will change after today? How many new students will come to ruin the perfection we have here. I grunt at the thought my spot on the representative committee being taken by a newcomer.
Next to my glass I see my identification card. It reads:
ID Number: 9432
Dimensional Identification: SG
Dimensional Risk Scale: 1
Academy of Study: 15
Country of Origin: United States of America
Race: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Although it’s informative, It doesn’t actually say much about my life. I used to live in Indiana with my four sisters, dad and step mom. It was an absolute miracle I was picked to be in the WWDP.
The day the doorbell rang with the news of my acceptance, I was home alone. The man waited with me in my living room until my parents and sisters returned. It was quite awkward in fact. When everyone did come home and heard the news, it wasn’t like all the newspaper articles where the family hugged and cried. Event though they were happy they were confused why I was picked since I had little interests outside of school. Once the surprise wore off though, they did hug me and my sisters started to inform their friends. The man looked at me and told me I could now run and tell all my friends, little did her know I had none. Instead I went to my room and sat there all alone.
The next day I went to school. On the bus I saw a girl use her phone camera to take a picture of me with her. I figured maybe she was the only one that knew because of my sisters. When we did arrive and I walked though the hallways a bunch of football players slapped me on the back and started screaming, “Matthews is our bro now! He is gonna be part of our crew!”
I was shocked and turned away then I realized this was actually happening. People started to notice me for the first time. Girls started to smile at me when I walked down the hall with my new “friends” and I felt kind of okay looking. Teachers applauded me and I finally sat with people at lunch. The football players invited me to parties; I guess they don’t remember how they pushed my books out of my arms the week before my secret was revealed.
Despite the stereotype, I have been insecure since I was a little kid. I knew I hated myself. I had extremely pale skin that burned too easily. My legs and arms seemed out of proportion and too long. I also had dull brown hair that matched the hair covering my white skin. Although it wasn’t a huge problem, when I did get acne I tried to hide my face even more than usual. When I was younger, I was fat, and now even though I evened out I felt oddly big and small in some places.
Arrival day came far too quickly for my liking, feeling good about myself for once was nice. I acted like it was no big deal even though I was relatively scared of being transferred. The process was so long ago now that I barely remember anything except being strapped into a mold of my body with wires attached to all my muscles. The people in the transfer center were so kind to me, and knew I was nervous.
The transfer itself was completely indescribable. I kept my eyes shut like I was told but I felt as if I was falling into nothing. You could feel the sense of reality slipping away. Then suddenly there was no more gravity. No more sense of time and space. It was like being surrounded by emptiness. And as quickly as that feeling came, it left and you felt yourself racing in the other direction to a new reality. And you felt yourself hit reality as if it was a piece of pavement.
I still remember all of us opening our eyes and moving our limbs for the first time once we arrived at the transfer center at Academy 61. I chuckle as I remember the girl who touched my cheek to make sure I was real. It’s funny how much has changed since then.
I stand up and stretch out my muscles. I feel less hangover now. Glancing at my watch I realize it’s almost six. Only one more hour until the first wake up call.
Running briskly across the room, I grab a pillow and cover my front half. I push open the doors and climb up a few flights of stairs to get to the main corridors. The white marble torches in the wall only dimly lit since it’s still early morning. I can see the sun peaking over the horizon through the silk draped windows.
The academy is gigantic. Well, maybe not compared to the upper academies but I’ve never seen any others. It sits on the top of a very large hill surrounded by a forest to the north, and a lake to the south. Far west you can see the tops of the snow covered mountains where Academy 30 is located. To the east is just open land with roads that lead to the main city our academy is connected to. The scientists weren’t creative when naming our linked city, naming it only Academy City.
When we aren’t preoccupied with our academy, we visit our linked city. Every Academy has a city that it is linked with. Some academies are located in the city. Such as Academy 101 located in its corresponding city named Cirilium. God I wonder how amazing it is there.
The actual academy to me is shaped sort of like the Pantheon in Greece. The front is designed tall and majestic with marble speckled with gold. It has seven large columns that are six feet wide each and are who knows how high. At the top are fifteen Roman figures, each holding a star. There are two flights of thin stairs leading up to the entrance behind the columns. The sides of the academy jut out in different parts Most of the outside of the academy is made of the marble gold but the backside facing the lake and low land is covered in grass with grass landings floating in mid air. Some parts of the academy are buildings with connections to the main section.
I actually am sort of looking forward to seeing the newest members faces when they look at it all.
I got lost inside though at least twelve times before I realized there were maps on our portable housing featurette.
Once you open the doors there’s a main lobby with stain glass above your head. You can take the right corridor to access other parts of the academy, such as where the classrooms are, or you can take the left corridor where a lot of the activity rooms are.
The real amazement is if you just walk straight.
If you enter the main atrium, you will be startled at how bright the white lights are. It has six levels surrounding you on all sides. You will find large white marble tables with cushioned seats for us to sit at and discuss. Couches and lounges with fire pits that burn icy blue fires. At the head of the room there are six seats, with two larger seats in the middle for our representatives and two smaller ones for their appointed helpers. For this room can be transferred into a grand ballroom. Above your head are small barely noticeable staircases that look as if they’re floating in mid air between the different levels; connecting the different floors to each other. Everything is mainly in gold and white. Members are housed in their own dorms all around the main atrium or in other housing areas around the academy.
I enter the doorway to the main atrium and the white lights are starting to brighten with the 7AM coming closer. The sun is glistening gently through the glass roof. I take steps quietly up the stair cases until I’m on the third floor. I turn around the corner to my room and quietly unlock my door and shuffle in.
“About time you got here,”
I turn around so fast the pillow goes flying around and hits a lamp in the corner. Sanz is standing in front of me. Not flinching at the fact I’m completely naked.
“Sanz! The hell is wrong with you!” I try covering myself and run over to the dresser putting on underwear and jeans as fast as I can.
“You said you’d be up early to help me prep for my date with Bloo,” he says calmly still not breaking from his constant stare at me, “You’re ass is pretty flat by the way.”
I roll my eyes at him and put my head in my lap. I’m going to have to kill myself now.
“This never happened,” I say lifting a finger to him. He nods.
“What do you need my help with anyway?” I pull on my shoes as I wait for him to respond.
“I don’t know, where should we go today?” He hops on my bed and starts spraying his black hair with a small crystal bottle.
I go to push him off my bed, “Don’t spray that stuff on my bed. What is it anyway?” I ask curiously.
“Hair spray, gives me that sexy Asian look,” he growls at me. I just turn away and shake my head.
“Okay so now that you’ve made me really uncomfortable, just, I don’t know, be yourself, take her to the milkshake place and just talk about like drawing and anime and stuff like you normally do.”
“That’s so gay.”
“And staring at me completely naked and watching me getting dressed isn’t?” I pointed out.
He laughs and throws a shirt at me, “This is why I have a girlfriend and you don’t,” he smiles
Before I say anything, we hear loud knocking on the door. It annoys me how little silence there is early in the morning. I walk slowly to open it until I hear Bloo’s voice calls out, “SG! Come quick! There’s been a terrorist attack at the United Nations!”
Sanz and I look at each other and we quickly run out the door and he goes to hug Bloo.
“What happened?” he asks as we start walking into the atrium and then left towards the news room. On the way we see more and more members, still in their night clothes flocking to the center of it all. Once we arrive in the room all the screens are on. We see the smoke slowly rising from the entrance on a UN building. We all look on carefully as they report the first fatalities. Soon the room is packed to past capacity and there are gasps as we see bodies of future WWDP students being pulled from the wreckage.
ACADEMY - Chapter One
Omniscient
At the South Pole, near the barren ice plateaus in Antarctica, there is a man carrying a metal suitcase. Dressed in full winter gear, he approaches a large hanger. He wipes his snow goggles with the dry part of his gloves. His breathing is getting heavy, from trekking miles across a dry cold plain. His helicopter dropped him off about an hour ago.
Suddenly loud popping sounds are heard from behind him. Gunshots. He runs forward and trips and falls on the snow-covered ground. The shots are getting louder. He stumbles forward and reaches the door to the hanger. He presses numbers into the code lock and quickly closes it behind him.
It’s dark inside the hanger. No lights or noises. He walks forward and searches the wall for a switch. The lights turn on one by one and he is greeted by the sight of a line of scientists in white coats staring at him. On the walls are bodies, male and female bodies. Each of them is covered in a thick, white, frozen foam. In the center of the room past the scientists is a great screen. The screen is black and around him are hundreds of computers and glowing pods open. He hears a dull groaning noise. It seems to be all around him and he covers his ears.
“Welcome, Professor” a woman dressed in uniform steps forward out of the line and reaches to take the suitcase. The man pulls it back hesitantly.
She smiles, “Was there any trouble delivering to us the package?”
He pauses and decides to take off his goggles. “Not any trouble, some winds that knocked me off my feet,” his words fade out as he glances at the walls of frozen bodies, his face looks troubled.
“Oh you know,” the woman moves closer “We were worried about you, being a new professor sent down here from, Harvard isn’t it?”
He doesn’t respond. He just walks forwards and hands a man in the line of scientists the suitcase.
“Thank you for complying professor,” He hears the woman still talking from behind him, “But I’m afraid you’ve lied to us, for on our security monitors-“
She walks over to the nearest computer and clicks a few keys and on the gigantic screen appears the man running through the snow, gunshots are heard on the tape and the man trips and continues running.
“-show that you indeed have had some encounter with someone,”
He opens his heavy snow coat. He looks around, his face looking for some sort of understanding.
“I didn’t know who was making those gunshots, I-I just wanted to deliver you the suitcase. I was not informed what my mission was. I was summoned from my office one day you see. I remember because I was just finishing my paper on crossing sound barriers and the risks of dimensional experimentation. They told me I was going on an expedition. And before I knew it I was on a plane, in a suit and with people just as emotionless as you all!” He points around the room, his eyes are droopy and his face trembling slightly.
“I didn’t think you would lie to us Professor,” the woman states in a monotone voice so lacking in emotion that the professor twitches. He turns around to face her. She pulls out a gun from underneath her lab coat. He instinctively tosses his hands above his head and he starts to cry. He looks deeply into her eyes and she just stares back at him.
“Please! I didn’t think you’d see the people chasing me!” he kneels on the ground as she comes toward him with the gun.
“We see everything,” she says as she approaches him. The gun is fired and the man slumps to the ground.
