Gawd, I was pissed. The phones ordered in June had yet to materialize. Zip, zero, zed. No happy endings are given at Vodaphone, my technological blue balls left seriously unsatisfied. Even in the country’s more biz-savvy north, a sense of fucking urgency is not a core tenant. Grumbling aloud into my mask like one of those batty, entitled chicks captured on someone’s phone and humiliated online for all eternity, I exited the store onto the pedestrian promenade, running smack into a table covered with freshly foraged porcini mushrooms. Found in the nearby mountains that surround a drought-plagued, crispy Piedmonte, the fungi were stacked like faery pedestals next to a Giza-inspired pyramid of summer black truffles, unearthed in the hills of Alta Lange. - Like a Labrador Retriever, my ire quickly dissipated as I contemplated dinner: two of the smaller mushrooms with fewer blemishes will be cleaned and chopped and fried in fatty-rich yellow butter, with a hit of Fino sherry, and translucent rings of shallot. Finished with fistfuls of chopped parsley, sage, thyme, Grana Padano, and yet more butter, the no-doubt ugly, unworthy-of-Insta melange will be tossed with fresh fettuccini (made with hands not my own). - At the flea market last Sunday, held in an ancient walled town under a clock tower, a smooth talking man with a scarf tied in a French knot sold very old bottles of Barbaresco and Barolo for cheap. I nodded politely as he explained how to decant and aerate them. With a weakness for quite mature, even turning-the-corner wines, I chose a couple of bottles with decent fills, my hopes in line with the price tag. - Expectation is my Achilles heel. Expecting that things should be a certain way, that people will act in a manner I think appropriate, that business is conducted efficiently and professionally, and judged against standards arbitrarily set elsewhere will leave me in a constant froth of frustration.
