Honestly I always loved ace byler ever since I started shipping them (I’m ace to I tend to project that onto every character in existence). However I genuinely believe that some things that will and mike both do in the show signs and are ace coded. (“To make out?” “To date?”) (a lot of things Mike does can pass as “oh that’s just because he’s gay” but how do we know it’s not both?? 🤨) The whole reason I started posting and trying to get people on the ace byler train was mainly because post finale almost ALL the byler content being allo implied or suggestive. I wanted an increase in content that wasn’t either of those things. Especially fanfics, i was struggling looking for fics for a couple months.

But hey, because of this, I never read supersoaker. So #AceBylerStaysWinning😛😋

i personally headcannon byler as being ace4ace. it is stated in the show that mike has never felt the way he does for el for anyone else, which can point to him being demi. he never seems to understand lucas and dustin gushing about women and girls being hot and just looks exhausted and confused whenever it comes up.

i think he's also experiencing comphet and, while he may have had feelings for el when they were younger, I think they were misconstrued/misinterpreted or mayhap due to el looking like a boy at the time.

both lucas and nancy questioned or teased mike about liking el in s1 so it's very possible he internalized it and applied it to feelings he was having that weren't truly romantic in the way he thought. it's a pretty common teenage experience to confuse platonic and romantic love, after all.

while it isn't stated that mike feels exactly the same for will, it is very explicitly demonstrated that their friendship is noticeably different from the other friendships the boys have with each other.

mike is the only one that notices when will is acting different or weird. will is the only person mike is able to apologize to regarding fights without needing prompting from someone else. will is the only person whose absence meant that hawkins didn't feel like home.

in the first mileven scene of s3, they're making out and mike is immediately moving el's hands off of him, then stops kissing her to sing along to the song that's playing, which she doesn't enjoy. but of course, that could all mean nothing /s.

s4 mike is trying to be 'as normal as possible'. he's still a loser at school though, so the only thing finn could've meant by that is his relationship with el. trying to be normal, hmm? well there's a couple things that could be alluding to.

there isn't as much proof of the same for will, seeing as he's been missing or possessed half the time, but using my expertise as an aroace person, i think i've sussed him out.

firstly, we've never seen him look at any other boy the way he looks at mike. he was in cali for 6 months and very well could've found a boy to have a fling with, but he literally only has eyes for mike.

there shouldn't be anything suspicious about him having posters of superheroes, for example, in his room (like mike does), yet he only has artsy nature and city photographs and band posters on his walls (at least in cali; i don't remember if we ever see inside his room in hawkins aside from the teddy bear in his closet at the end of s3).

it's been discussed to hell and back that will's not wanting to 'grow up' and thinking the boys will play games together in mike's basement forever alludes to his feelings for mike and not wanting to have to grow out of them. why can't they still be those little kids that didn't have girlfriends and just hung out with each other all the time?

while i definitely agree with this interpretation (that i may have butchered slightly, apologies) as being gay, i think it's doing double duty.

will's reputation of being a late bloomer can be read, not just as gay, but (aro)ace as well. while I don't have will's experience, i can recognize subtext, and just wanting to play games with your friends and thinking they'll never get girlfriends (and likely not even considering it) is barely even subtext from how loud it is.

it seems like such a thing where you aren't seen as having matured if you aren't in a relationship and care more about things that are 'silly' like reading books, watching tv shows, playing games with friends. (tying back to 'normal' mike a bit as well)

while i doubt that the show is going to discuss ace identities, nor do i necessarily think byler are meant to be ace coded, you can pry this headcanon from my cold, dead hands.

tldr; mike is a demiromantic homosexual, will is a gay demiromantic demisexual, they are in love, and i need to go to bed.
