Ace kisses your forehead like it’s second nature. It’s his way of saying I’m here, even when he doesn’t have the words.
He’ll lean down without thinking, brushing a soft kiss to your forehead before heading out, before falling asleep, or even mid‑conversation.
It’s gentle, warm, and always makes you melt a little, which he pretends not to notice.
Knuckles
Ace kisses your knuckles when he’s feeling playful… or when he’s trying to charm you.
He’ll take your hand slowly, eyes locked on yours, and bring your knuckles to his lips with a tiny smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
He loves the way you get flustered every single time, even though he does it often.
It’s his favorite way to make you blush.
Neck
Ace only kisses your neck when he’s being soft , never teasing, never dramatic.
Usually it’s when he’s hugging you from behind, half‑asleep, or when he’s just woken up and hasn’t fully opened his eyes yet.
He’ll nuzzle into your shoulder, press a warm, lazy kiss to the side of your neck, and mumble something you can’t quite hear.
It’s quiet affection, the kind he doesn’t show anyone else.
Cheek
Ace kisses you often...very often.
Even if he doesn’t have time to stop and properly kiss you, he’ll still lean over just to press a quick kiss to your cheek before running off again. To him, it’s as natural as holding your hand or pulling you into a hug.
It’s effortless. Instinctive.
A quiet little reminder that he loves you, even in the middle of busy days.
Shoulder
Ace loves leaving quick kisses on your shoulder throughout the day.
If he passes by you on the ship, whether he’s grabbing something, teasing you, or just moving past. He’ll lean down and press a soft kiss against your skin like it’s second nature.
Sometimes it’s so quick you barely notice.
Other times, it leaves you smiling for the rest of the day.
It’s small, but with Ace, those little moments always mean the most.
Belly
Ace falls asleep everywhere.
On deck. In the kitchen. Against the railing. Somewhere he definitely shouldn’t be.
So when you find him half-asleep and gently wake him up, he’ll lazily wrap his arms around your waist, still too sleepy to fully function.
Before letting go, he presses a quick, absentminded kiss against your stomach...soft, warm, and completely casual. Before standing up and acting like he didn’t just make your heart stop.
Meanwhile, you’re left standing there trying to remember how breathing works.
Head
Ace absolutely uses his height to tease you.
He loves sneaking up behind you just to press a kiss to the top of your head before pretending nothing happened.
Sometimes it’s playful, paired with a smug grin when you glare at him.
Other times, it’s softer.
When he’s tired. Quiet. When the world feels too loud.
That’s when he’ll rest his chin on your head, arms wrapping around you from behind, and leave the gentlest kiss there, like you’re his favorite place to be.
Hands
Ace loves teasing you, and he especially loves how easy it is to make you flustered.
He’ll take your hand in his, hold your gaze for far too long, and then slowly press a kiss right into your palm.
Deliberate.
Unfair.
And when your face immediately turns red and you try to look away?
He just grins like he’s won. Because he has.
Nose
When Ace kisses your nose, it’s always playful.
He’ll gently squish your cheeks together with one hand, trapping you in place while he presses repeated little kisses to your nose with the biggest grin on his face.
You’re laughing, trying to pull away, and he’s absolutely refusing to let you.
It’s teasing. Affectionate. Ridiculously cute.
And somehow, those silly little nose kisses always end up being some of your favorites.

Burning Hearts
portgas d. ace x fem!reader
A/N | sorry for the waittttttt, hope you'll like it!!
You hang off the side of the Moby Dick, legs swinging, face tilted to the sun. Warm breeze, blue skies, no marines in sight, so a perfect day. You hum something under your breath, a song you don’t remember the name of.
“You’re gonna fall in if you lean any more.” a voice calls behind you.
“Will not.” you say, turning your head “Hi, Ace.”
Portgas D. Ace, second division commander, walking disaster, and your best friend, grins at you wide and easy. Too easy.
“Hi.” he says, sitting down beside you, a little closer than normal people would. Not that you notice.
You scoot to make space. He scoots too. The gap doesn’t grow.
“Thatch said we might have grilled fish later,” you say “If you don’t burn the grill again.”
“Hey! That was ONE TIME.”
“Twice.”
“Once.” he insists, turning pink.
You laugh “Sure, sure, Pyro.”
He pouts, arms crossed “You’re lucky you’re cute when you tease me.”
You blink “Huh?”
Ace freezes “I said rude. You’re rude when you tease me.”
“Sounded like ‘cute.’”
“Nope. You heard wrong. Sea got in your ears.”
You squint at him “We’re not even swimming.”
“Exactly. That’s how tricky the sea is.”
You shrug “Okay...”
You swing your legs again, and Ace watches, all soft and smiley.
Marco walks by. Stops. Stares at the two of you.
“You confessin’, hothead?” he asks with a smirk.
Ace’s head jerks up “WHAT?! NO. SHUT UP.”
You blink “Confessing what?”
“Nothing!” Ace blurts “He’s just being weird!”
Marco snorts “You’re the one acting like a lovesick seagull.”
“I will set your feathers on fire, Marco, I swear—”
You tilt your head “Ace? Are you okay?”
“I’M GREAT.” His voice cracks “Just. Great. Totally normal.”
You frown “You look sweaty.”
“I’m always sweaty! Fire powers!”
“You’re red too.” You poke his cheek “Are you sick?”
Ace swats your hand away, blushing furiously “NO. STOP TOUCHING ME.”
“But you always make me touch your forehead when you get headaches—”
“That’s DIFFERENT.” he shouts, hiding his face in his hands.
From the corner, Thatch cackles “Oh, he’s doomed.”
“I heard that!” Ace yells.
You blink again, totally lost “Doomed for what? What did you do?”
Ace glares at Thatch “Nothing! He just—he thinks I—”
Thatch grins “That you’re in love with your best friend?”
You laugh “With me? That’s dumb. Right, Ace?”
Ace opens his mouth. Closes it. Groans.
“I’m gonna jump into the sea.”
“Don’t.” you say, pulling him back by the sleeve “That’s no escape.”
Ace just slams his forehead onto your shoulder.
You pat his back gently “You’re so dramatic today.”
“Yeah,” he mumbles into your shirt “It’s your fault.”
“Ace likes you.” Thatch says casually, like he’s talking about the weather.
You choke on your drink “What?”
Ace drops his fork “THATCH!”
“What?” Thatch shrugs “It’s true.”
You look at Ace. He’s frozen, mid-bite, eyes wide “You okay?”
“I’m fine.” he says, voice several pitches higher than normal “Totally fine. Normal. Good.”
“Your face is red again,” you say “Sunburn?”
“YES,” he blurts “Very strong sun today.”
You frown “Should I get aloe?”
“I—no—it’s okay—I’ll just—go die in the kitchen, thanks.” He grabs his tray and leaves at lightning speed.
Thatch winks at you “He’s suffering.”
You’re still confused “From what? Heatstroke?”
Later that day, Ace paces back and forth behind a barrel. You’re nearby, talking to Izo about your favorite snacks. Ace tries to look casual. He absolutely does not look casual.
“I’m gonna tell her...” he mutters “For real this time. I’ll just walk up, say the words. Easy.”
He steps out from behind the barrel. Then steps back. Then out. Then back again.
“Oi,” Marco calls, hovering above “Are you dancing or just losing your mind?”
“I’M THINKING!” Ace snaps.
“Thinking about what?”
Ace glares “None of your business.”
Marco grins “You’re thinking about Y/N. Again.”
“I WILL BURN THIS SHIP DOWN.”
“Please don’t!” Whitebeard yells from the upper deck.
Ace groans “Okay. No more waiting. I’m doing it now.”
You’re sitting alone this time, sharpening a knife you never actually use in fights. Ace walks up, all tense and weird and trying very hard to breathe normally.
“Hey.” he says, way too loudly.
You look up “Hi. You look like you’re going to pass out.”
He sits. Fidgets. Grabs a leaf off the floor and starts tearing it to shreds.
But you sit. The table is decorated with flowers. The food is actually not bad.
You smile “Did you cook this?”
“Some of it.”
You’re impressed “Wow. You didn’t even burn the rice.”
“I had help.” he mumbles.
You laugh “Still counts.”
Ace watches you eat, heart thumping like a drum. You're glowing in the candlelight. Smiling at him.
He can’t breathe. This was a terrible idea.
“You’ve been acting weird lately.” you say, picking at your food.
“No, I haven’t.”
“You made me dinner. You lit candles. You used flowers.”
He opens his mouth. Closes it. Rubs his face “Okay. Maybe I’ve been… a little weird.”
You tilt your head “Is this about that person you like?”
He chokes “W-What?”
“You know. That crush you’ve been avoiding talking about.”
“…What.”
“I’m not dumb, Ace. You’ve been flustered all week. You’re always zoning out and smiling at nothing.”
He stares at you. His whole brain is just a static noise now.
“You like someone,” you say proudly “I knew it.”
He tries to speak. Fails.
“Who is it?” you ask, leaning in with bright, curious eyes “Do I know them? Mmmh, it can't be from the crew, you're always with me... Are they on the crew?”
He swallows “Yeah.”
You gasp “Oh my god. It’s someone on the ship?!”
Ace nods slowly “...Yeah.”
You start thinking “Okay. Not Thatch. Gross. Not Marco—he’s basically your dad. Not Izo... he's too cute for you. Vista? Nah. Is it one of the nurses?”
Ace looks like he’s about to spontaneously combust.
“Oh!” you say, eyes wide “That cute girl who came aboard last week? The timing is perfect with when you started acting weirder.”
His soul leaves his body.
“No.” he says. Quiet. Broken.
You frown “Really? I thought she liked you. She gave you a peach.”
“Y/N.”
“Yeah?”
“You’re thinking too hard.”
You pause “...Wait.” You look at him. Eyes narrowing “Is it someone I know really well?”
He nods again.
You gasp “Oh my god, is it me?!”
Ace’s eyes widen. Hope flickers.
You stare at him “No, wait. That doesn’t make sense.”
The hope dies.
He blinks “…Right.”
Your heart kinda broke at this but you try your best to act normal... because why are you even thinking of your best friend in that way. And why is your own heart acting this weird now...
“Exactly!” you say “It can’t be me. That’d be crazy!”
He stares at you in silence. Just. Stares.
Then, slowly, with the tiniest, most pained smile “Yeah. Crazy.”
You beam “Anyway! I hope they like you back! You’re super cool when you’re not burning everything.”
Ace laughs once. It’s not a joyful laugh. It’s a “my soul has left my body” laugh.
“Thanks.” he says.
He will never emotionally recover from this dinner.
It starts the morning after the dinner.
You wake up and remember his words “Yeah. It’s someone you know really well.”
You said, “It can’t be me.”
He said, “Yeah. Crazy.”
He smiled. A really sad smile.
Your chest does that thing again, just as during his confession. Not pain. Not joy. Something in between. Weird. Annoying. Uncomfortable. Like… pressure.
You shake it off and go find Ace. But Ace isn’t there. And he’s always there.
You try again the next day. You go to the deck where he usually naps. No Ace.
Then the kitchen. No Ace.
Training area. No Ace.
You find Thatch instead “Hey, you seen Ace?”
Thatch raises an eyebrow “Not lately. Why? Missing him?”
You snort “No. I mean—he’s my friend. That’s all.”
“Uh-huh.” He sips his drink and smirks “Totally normal to look that panicked over a friend.”
“I’m not panicking.” You absolutely are.
You start acting weird. You can’t help it.
Your heart keeps doing that tight, twisty thing when you think about him being with someone else. About him smiling at someone else like he smiles at you.
You hate it. But you don’t get it.
He’s your best friend. Why would it bother you?
...Unless it means something.
No. No no no.
Impossible.
You avoid him instead. If he wants space to be with his crush, then fine. You’ll give it to him.
Even if your heart stings every time you think about it.
Meanwhile…
Ace is dying.
You haven’t looked at him in three days. Haven’t sat beside him at meals. Haven’t made any dumb jokes. No hair ruffling. No teasing.
Nothing.
And it hurts.
He walks past you one afternoon. You don’t even say hi. You turn around and start talking to someone else.
He nearly combusts on the spot.
“What did you do?” Izo asks that night, watching him stare into the sea like it insulted his family.
“I don’t know...” Ace mutters “I think I broke her.”
Marco crosses his arms “Or maybe she’s just finally realizing she likes you back.”
Ace throws his head back and groans “No, she doesn’t. She thinks I like someone else. She thinks it’s not her. Now she’s avoiding me and it’s driving me insane.”
“Why didn't you tell her the truth?”
“I tried. She guessed wrong, and I just… gave up. I'm so tired.”
Thatch chuckle “This is what happens when two emotionally stunted people fall for each other.”
“Shut UP. She doesn't like me.”
You’re sitting on the edge of the ship at night. Alone. Arms around your knees. Watching the stars.
You hear footsteps behind you. You don’t look.
Then you hear his voice. Quiet “You hate me now or something?”
Your stomach flips “No. Of course not.”
He sits beside you. Not too close. Not like before. It makes your chest ache again.
“You’ve been avoiding me.” he says.
“I thought you were avoiding me.”
“I was giving you space.”
“Why would I need space. I was giving you space. So you could be with the person you like.”
Silence.
You can feel his eyes on you.
“I don’t want to be with anyone else.” he says softly.
Your heart skips.
Silence... heavy.
“I miss you.” he says. Quiet. Honest.
“Even if you’re just sitting next to me, not talking. I miss that too.”
Your throat tightens “I miss you too.”
He’s so close now. Just inches away. You could reach out. You want to.
But you don’t. You don’t even know why your chest is doing all these weird things. You’re not ready to look too closely.
So instead, you whisper, “Let’s not be weird anymore.”
He laughs soft and tired “Deal.”
After your awkward little emotional spiral under the stars, you and Ace go back to normal.
Well... your version of normal.
You laugh with him again. Sit next to him. Tease him like always. But now you also spend most of your free time watching him from the corner of your eye, waiting.
Waiting to see her. The mystery girl. The one he likes.
You’re subtle (you think).
“Hey, Ace,” you say casually one day, spinning your fork at lunch, “you ever talk to that nurse again? The cute one?”
He blinks “...What?”
“Y’know. The one who gave you a peach.”
He makes a face “Oh. No, not really.”
You nod “Right. Not her, then.”
He squints “Why do you sound like a detective?”
“I... don’t.” You absolutely do.
You try again later.
“Thatch said you’ve been spending time with someone. Is that true?”
Ace snorts “Thatch says a lot of things.”
“So it’s not true?”
He shrugs “Not really.”
You bite your lip “Right.”
But that doesn’t help. You start watching harder. Every person he laughs with, you feel this little sting in your chest. Every smile that isn’t toward you, it hurts. And the worst part is:
You get it now.
You like him. You really like him. Not just the “best friend” way. The kind of like where your heart flips when he laughs, and your hands burn when he touches you. The kind of like that hurts.
And the one thing you know for sure is: he doesn’t feel the same.
Because he already likes someone else.
And it’s not you.
You think you’ve figured it out.
You see him talking to one of the new crew members, laughing, relaxed, standing close. You’ve never seen him look at you like that.
And something in you just… breaks.
You disappear that afternoon.
No big announcement. No drama. You just quietly take a little boat and row out to a quiet rock near the ship. One Ace took you to once, when you needed air. It’s far enough that nobody can hear you cry.
Because you are crying.
You sit there, legs pulled in, arms wrapped around yourself, eyes red and stinging.
And no matter how hard you try, the thought keeps coming back:
Why couldn’t it be me?
Why not the person who’s been by his side all this time?
Why not you?
Back on the ship:
Nobody says it out loud, but the silence says enough.
“Where’s Y/N?”
“Gone for a bit.”
“She looked really off today.”
“Think she's sick?”
“No.”
“…Think it’s about Ace?”
Marco sighs “Should someone check on her?”
“Not me,” Thatch mutters “She looked like she’d bite if anyone came near.”
“I’ll go.” says a voice behind them.
Ace.
You don’t hear him until he’s already climbing onto the rock behind you.
“Hey.”
You stiffen. Don’t look at him.
“Everyone’s freaking out,” he says, voice soft “Are you okay?”
You nod. But your eyes are still full of tears, and your throat hurts, and your chest feels like it’s cracking open.
He sits beside you, close but careful.
You try to wipe your eyes without him noticing, but he sees. Of course he does.
“Hey.” His voice changes in a softer and worried way “You’re crying.”
You press your face into your arm.
He leans in, panicking a little “Did something happen? Did someone say something?”
You shake your head. You’re breathing hard now, chest heaving.
“Y/N,” he says gently, “please tell me what’s wrong.”
Your voice breaks when you finally speak “…Why can’t you like me?”
Ace freezes “…What?”
You still don’t look at him. You just stare at the water, tears falling “Why couldn’t it be me? What’s wrong with me?”
“Wait, wait—what are you talking about?” His voice is shaking.
“You like someone,” you whisper “I get it. You told me. It’s not me. That’s fine. I’m fine. I just… I don’t understand.” You sniff “Why not me?”
Ace is absolutely frozen in place. His brain has completely shut down.
“You think—” He stops “You think I don’t like you?”
You finally glance at him, eyes full of tears “You said it wasn’t me. At dinner. You said it was crazy.”
Ace stares. Then groans “Y/N...”
“What?”
He covers his face with both hands “I said it was crazy because you said it couldn’t be you and I was too tired to argue.”
You blink “So…”
“I like you.” He says it so fast he almost chokes on it “I have this whole time. And no, I don't mean it like e friend as you thought many and maaaany times....”
You stare “What?”
He turns to you, cheeks red, eyes wide “It’s you. It’s always been you. You freaking idiot.”
“…Oh.”
He looks like he might cry now too “You really thought I didn’t want you?”
You nod.
He groans again “We’re so dumb.”
You both laugh, broken laughs between sniffles.
Then, carefully, he touches your hand “I don’t want anyone else, Y/N.”
“…Me neither,” you whisper “I mean... I want you. Not anyone else.”
He squeezes your hand.
“Can I kiss you?” he asks.
You nod.
You’re still crying. Ace is still blushing.
Your hands are still tangled together.
There’s silence now. But the good kind.
Your heart is pounding so loud you can barely hear the waves anymore.
He leans in, slow and unsure, eyes flicking to your lips, then back to your eyes “Still okay?” he asks softly.
You nod.
He waits a second longer. Like he doesn’t believe it’s real. Then he closes the gap.
And he kisses you.
It’s not rough or messy, just soft and full of everything he’s held in for way too long. Like he’s scared he’ll wake up and you’ll be gone. Like he’s trying to tell you everything he never managed to say.
Your hands move instinctively to his shirt, to his neck. You don’t even think. You just feel.
And when you pull away, just a little, Ace exhales like he’s been holding his breath for years. Like he’s finally, finally free.
He rests his forehead against yours and laughs under his breath. It’s shaky “Can’t believe you were so oblivious all this time…”
You laugh too. Still teary, but smiling now “Sorry…”
“You can’t even imagine how many times I tried to confess,” he mutters, almost to himself “I started to give up, even…”
You go quiet again. Then whisper, “I could only realize my feelings once I started picturing you with someone else…”
That makes him flinch “Ouch.”
“I hated it,” you admit “It was like someone shoved a knife in my chest and twisted it around every time I saw you smiling at someone else.”
His face softens. He cups your cheek, thumb brushing your skin “You don’t have to feel that again. Okay?”
You nod.
Then you pause “...Unless you do something really stupid. Like flirt with a nurse again.”
He groans “I didn’t even want the peach... Thatch made me take it!”
You smile into another kiss, this one lighter, more playful.
And just like that, everything’s different. And somehow exactly the same.
But now you know.
You’ve both stopped crying, but your eyes are still a little red.
You and Ace stay on that rock a little longer.
Just sitting. Smiling. Quietly touching hands like it’s some big secret now.
And neither of you says it, but you don’t want to go back to the ship yet.
Because once you do…
They’ll know.
They always know.
Still, eventually, Ace sighs “We should go, they were worried about you.”
“Yeah.” you say. But don’t move.
“…At the same time,” he adds, wincing a little “Otherwise they’ll think something happened.”
You raise an eyebrow “Something did happen.”
“Yeah, but I’d like to keep breathing, thank you. Thatch will explode if he finds out before we even step off the boat.”
You laugh “Okay. Together, then.”
You both climb back in the little rowboat and paddle toward the Moby Dick, pretending not to look at each other too much. You fail miserably.
The moment your feet enters...
SILENCE.
Every eye is on you.
Marco is leaning against the rail with his arms crossed, giving you that smug, all-knowing look.
Izo is peeking from behind a column, vibrating.
Thatch has one brow raised, mid-bite of a sandwich. He doesn’t even blink. Just stares.
Even Whitebeard’s laugh stops echoing.
You and Ace freeze like two kids caught sneaking snacks at midnight.
Thatch is the first to move.
He stands up. Slowly. Grinning.
“Sooooooo…”
His eyes go to Ace. Then to you. Then to your joined hands.
You both look down at the same time and FLING them apart like they’re on fire.
Ace: “It’s—!! I mean—we were just—!!”
You: “It’s not what it looks like!!”
Also you: Why am I lying?! IT’S EXACTLY WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.
There’s a loud gasp. Izo dramatically fans himself.
Marco just sighs, smirking “Finally.”
Thatch HOWLS with laughter “I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN!”
You bury your face in your hands. Ace looks like he might jump off the ship.
“You guys SUCK.” he mutters.
“We literally waited months for this,” Marco says calmly “Don’t deny us the moment.”
You groan.
Whitebeard, from his throne, just chuckles “Yoi yoi… took you long enough, brats.”
And now the whole crew is losing it laughing, teasing, throwing playful jabs.
Someone throws confetti (you're not even going to ask where that came from).
Thatch: “How was the kiss? Was it good? Did he finally stop being awkward?!”
Ace: “SHUT. UP.”
You: melting into the floor
Thatch: “Oh my god. You’re both disasters.”
Marco: “So… are you official now?”
Izo: “Are we going to plan a party??”
Ace: “NO—WAIT—WE HAVEN’T EVEN TALKED ABOUT THAT—”
You: “We haven’t even held hands for a full minute!!”
Later that night, when it’s finally quiet again, you sit beside Ace on the upper deck, watching the stars.
He nudges your shoulder “Already regretting the kiss?”
You smile “Only that I didn’t do it first.”
His ears go red again.
“…You’re still cute when you blush.” you add.
“Don’t tell the crew that.” he grumbles, hiding his face.
You lean closer “Too late. They definitely already know.”
Uh, okay, what about a One Piece Mens (Ace, Law, Crocodile and Sabo) with a Fem! S/o who has a Devil Fruit conected to flowers? Like, she can create flowers and even use them as a weapon or make poison 👀
FLOWERS + ONE PIECE MEN
info: i hope you like this!!! tw mentions of murder and things of that nature || commissions/ko-fi + b-day raffle (open until the 15th)
ace finds your devil fruit simply stunning. whenever you use your powers, his eyes shine so bright and his smile gets so wide—if you look at him, you would almost see a tail wiggling behind him. he often asks you questions about specific flowers that you always use, a soft smile playing on his lips as he hears you ramble. make him a bouquet of your favorite flowers and catch him almost crying out of joy; sharing something like that with him will always make him love you even more.
law considered you his right hand during medical emergencies. he could always count on you to help him with your flowers, law himself often using them to make medicines for the ship. you don't know about it, but he keeps a small diary with all of your flowers and their descriptions; his favorite hobby now is payong attention to you, so he can fill even more pages in the diary. whenever you handle anything by yourself, he smirks with pride—though, he wouldn't admit that to anyone but yourself.
to crocodile, you were just a pawn that he used to poison his enemies easily. slowly, you grew in his heart; your favorite flowers slowly appearing all over his house, you got sent to less and less dangerous missions without a proper explanation as to why. when you two started to have a relationship, you became his most prized thing in the world—he would say that is just because of your devil fruit, but you knew it wasn't just that. the only way that he allows you to use your powers now is to keep the garden, that he built just for you, alive and bright.
sabo finds your devil fruit very amusing. he always loved how you could be the most majestic person alive, but also the most dangerous enemy. his favorite thing is to lay on a field of the flowers you grew, knowing damn well you could use them to kill him at any time. but you wouldn't. his biggest dream became making the world free, so you could give people joy with your flowers, the same way that you gave him joy. during battles, he always makes sure to be close to you, in case you're too focused on making your flowers grow and you don't see a potential attack. he is always ready to have your back, but he would always brush it off as "taking care of the best florist he knows".

Hey, I would like to request Ace and the fem reader with the line "I'll always be waiting for you". It can be that the reader is hopelessly falling in love with Ace, and her family has the sort of things that they can only fall in love once in their lives and is going to spend the rest of her life loving that person only. I hope I'm not troubling you with this request. Thank you.
Absolutely no trouble sweetheart! Enjoy!
Back to you
(Ace D Portgas x Reader)
You met him when you both were as young as seventeen years old. You lived in a small island where it was not a place for pirates to attack so the village you lived in was pretty safe to say. However that changed when a notorious pirates attacked your island near your village and to your luck; you were near that village when they attacked however you managed to get away and run in the forest to hide away from the two pirates as they fought. You heard that there was another pirate ship; the white beard pirates as the villagers called them but you bad no idea who they were.
You kept running deep into the forest looking behind every now and then to make sure no one was following you only to run into someone and falling on them with a yelp. Immediately you started to slam your fist on whoever that was earning few "ouch" "hey" "ouuchh" from that person before he grabbed both your hands and flipped you over. Your fighting senses kicked in and you started to scream at him to not hurt you. "Shhhh, stop it!" He placed on of his hands on your mouth to stop you from screaming, "there are bad pirates here husshh before they find us!" He said and pulled you off the dirty ground hiding both of y'all behind a huge tree. Just then few pirates showed up holding fire torches.
"Are you sure the girl went this way?" One of them asked and your eyes widened. Ace pulled you closer to him. Shieldaig you with his left arm while ready to fight with his right arm shaking in fear; he was new to his powers. You tried to stop yourself from breathing too loud as they men looked around but left a few minutes later. None of you moved as Ace looked around to make sure they were gone letting go of you only to hear you scream because one of the pirates didn't leave. You grabbed Ace's wrist as the pirates tried to pull you to him.
Ace was quick to pull you towards him at the same time he lunched on the pirate with his fire fist, and he didn't stop until the pirate was passed out. You were shaking in fear when Ace turned around his fist burning in flame giving you an opportunity to look at his beautiful features, his expression softening when he saw you scared, "are you okay? Did he hurt you?" He asked you and you hugged him crying. "You're okay?" You nodded and then looked at him, "are you with the good pirates?" Your question made him smile wide, and oh you fell for him then and there, "Yes! We are here to help, come on let's get you somewhere safe, I'm Ace by the way." You followed him holding his hand, "Ace" you whispered his name and you liked it.
It wasn't long before the white beard pirates beat the other pirates and your villagers asked the white beard crew to stay for a while for a feast to which they agreed and you had told your parents how Ace saved your life. Your parents thanked him over and over which made him blush.
The feast was amazing and it lasted for a whole week! In that week you had grown closer to Ace and you followed each other around everywhere; you showed him the island and he told you about his brothers and his adventures making you excited to do the same and find your own adventures but you knew that you had started to like him more and more everyday, and you knew that you were allowed to love just one person and you wanted that to be Ace; he was kind, sweet and gentle towards you, and you knew he liked you too because he won't stop blushing and smiling when he was with you. You had fallen head over heels for the young pirate. You tried to convince yourself that it was just a crush because he "saved you" but you knew it was a lie when it was time for them to set sail and you felt your heart break and eyes filled with tears as you hugged each other, "I don't want you to go Ace, I'm gonna miss you so much" you cried in his chest and you've never cried like this before. He cried with you, "I'm gonna miss you more, sweetie. I wish I could take you with me but I don't want you in harms ways, I promise I will be back." You sniffle as you pulled back from the hug looking at him, he whipped your tears of your puffy cheeks, "Promise?" You whispered to which he smiled wide kissing you on the cheek, "promise on my life," he pulled out one of his handmade bracelets and placed them on your wrist, "so you'll remember me everytime you look at it. And the next time you see me, I'll be stronger for you. You won't forget me won't you?"
You shook your head, "I can't forget you Ace, I'll always be waiting for you, please come back to me? Ace, i lov-" he placed his palm on your lips, and shook his head, "Don't say it now, I might not leave and if I leave after you say those words I'll go crazy without you with me." He whispered looking at you with love poring from his gaze at you.
You smiled to which he nodded taking your hands in his and kissing them over and over, giving you one last (dozens) of kisses on your cheek he said his farewell and kept waving at each other until you couldn't see the ship anymore.
It been six years and everyday you would think about Ace and not a single day goes by with you waiting for him to come back, you never lost hope that he might come back one day; your family and some friends had told you to forget him and that he may never come back because he was a pirate and probably started his own family by now, and that thought made you cry to sleep some nights.
It was a usual morning for you when you woke up and did your everyday routine and headed into the town for your work at the small bookstore with Ace in the back of your mind as you worked and helped few customers to find the book they needed. It was getting later in day when you heard the bell while you were fixing few books on shelf, "Welcome, if you need help please call for me," you said not looking behind at who it was as you placed the books on shelf.
"I need help to find my girl," the voice sounded familiar as you turned around to reply when you gasped at that same familiar hat. That smile, that beautiful smile that you prayed to God to see again. Your eyes widened at his presence, "What? Did you forget me?" He said, then smiled wide. You screamed before running to jump in his arms; he was taller and much muscular whilst you were the same. You cried, hugging him, and he hugged you tight, "I missed you, sweetie!" He whispered, making you cry harder. He placed you on the floor and looked at you, "Look at you, you've become prettier than ever. I missed your pretty face so much you have no idea." He said as he hugged you again.
"Ace, you are here, oh Ace! I thought you forgot about me." He pulled away still holding your arms, "forget about you? I've been thinking about you everyday since I left, I've gone crazy without you and I had enough! I couldn't stay out there without you, you are important to me than being a pirate, I wanna be with you, if you'll have me."
You smiled wide, "Oh my Gosh, Ace! Yes, I wanna be yours in every lifetime, I lo-" you stopped which made his raise a brow, and smiled at you, "Say it please, I've been dying to hear you say it!" You chuckled as you felt your cheeks warm, "fine let's say it together?" He suggested to which you nodded.
He bent lower to become face to face with you and you both said it together, "I love you." You hid you face behind you both hands right after saying it and Ace laughed pulling your hands away, "noooo, let me look at your pretty face, let me! Please." You removed you hands off your face and it was his turn to say it now, "I love you, i love you, I love you, and I will always love you, dearly, madly and deeply, I will love you forever."
You smiled at "Ace, I love you, I love you please don't you ever leave me."
"I won't think of it, I'm here to stay, sweetie. Hmm can I ask you something?" You nodded as he rubbed the back of his head, "Canikhiishhissyou?"
"Huh?" You titled your head at his incoherent words and he blushed hard before saying it again, "can I kiss you?" You beamed and nodded un excitement, you've been waiting for this since he left. He gently kissed you and you felt like you were melting in his sweet kiss, you groaned in annoyance when he pulled away which made him chuckle and kiss you again and again until you both were laughing and blushing. He brushed his fingers over your lips, "you have the softest lips, I love you and your lips." You chuckled and jokingly hit his chest because he won't stop making you blush.
OMGGG I HAD SO MUCH FUN WRITING THIS! LITERALLY KICKING MY FEET AND BLUSHING!!
Okay so it took more than the preferred week, but here’s part 2A. There will be parts 2B and 2C as well. (maybe a 2D). 2A is the Ace ending, 2B will be a Sabo ending. I don’t know when it’ll be out, I want it to be out in a week or less but I’m not going to give any actual dates that it might be out by.
Walking down the street, Ace never expected to come so close to punching his brother, never expected to see so much red, but the moment he saw you and Sabo on that wooden swing, it took everything he had not to go up to the blond and start a fight. It was an old wood and rope swing attached to a tree that he’d fixed up years ago for your birthday after you’d expressed a desire to use it. Now his brother was standing on the wooden plank, with you sitting between his legs, swinging back and forth, the two of you laughing. His earlier talk with Marco and Thatch was still ringing in his head as he pulled out his cellphone. He had to get his brother away from you, he had to talk to you, alone. Ace quickly shot off a text about an emergency at home, hiding in a flower shop until his brother was out of sight before walking up to you. You looked a little bummed, sitting here alone on the swing, holding the ropes, gaze on your lap.
“H-hey, Y/n.” Ace muttered, standing in front of you, trying to seem casual. Your head shot up to look at him.
“Ace? What are you doing here? Sabo told me that you just texted him about an emergency at home!” You exclaimed, looking at the dark haired boy.
“I… I know. There’s… no emergency, I just… I had to get Sabo away and it was my best option.” Ace admitted, looking down as he nudged the dirt with his boot.
“Why? Ace, you’ve been acting weird lately, what’s going on? Why did you need Sabo to leave?” you demanded, brow furrowed. Marco and Thatch had told him that if he didn’t confront it, the feelings would fester until they either destroyed him or drove you away, but what if he drove you away by telling you? At least if he stayed quiet, you would stay, even if you were happy with Sabo, you would still be there, he could still see your beautiful smile, stand in your presence. If he didn’t, he could drive you away, not just into the arms of his brother, but away for good, he could drive you so far away that he’d never see you again. Ace didn’t think he could live with himself if he did that, even still, he wasn’t sure he could keep himself from spiraling out of control.
“B-because I don’t like how much you’re hanging out with him. I… I want you to stop.” Ace muttered, trying and failing to keep his hands from balling into fists. Your head tilted to the side in confusion, he wanted you to stop hanging out with Sabo?
“Ace, I thought you were happy that I was hanging out with Sabo, I thought that’s what you wanted.” you said, getting up from the swing and walking over to him.
“I… I did… originally. I wanted you to be friends but I… I don’t like how close you two are, okay! I just…” Ace trailed off, hoping that he wasn’t shaking as bad as he felt like he was. His breath hitched as he felt your hand on his bicep, looking up at him.
“You just what, Ace? Please, we’re supposed to be best friends, tell me what’s wrong.” you pleaded, sweet, concerned eyes staring into his. Ace didn’t even notice the tears that began to run down his cheeks, his emotions running too high and too wild. He wasn’t sure he could do this much longer, staying like this, not telling you how he felt. The dark haired boy moved like lightning, standing still in front of you one moment, the next he had one hand threaded through your hair and the other wrapped around your waist as he pulled you into the deepest, most passionate kiss he could manage. He poured everything he had into the kiss, weeks of pent up emotions, the dam that kept him in check spilling over. Love, compassion, tenderness, longing, but also fear, jealousy, anger, and insecurity. He had you backed up against the tree in seconds, lips still pressed firmly against his, the hand on your lower back now slamming against the tree, nails digging into the bark, scratching at it, the hand that was threaded through your locks now caressing your cheek. It wasn’t until the need to breath overcame his need to hold you that he pulled away, breathing coming out in heavy pants. Tears still streamed down his freckled cheeks, the young man looking down again, afraid to look at you. Your hand had stayed on his bicep, while the other had moved to rest against his chest, both now moving up to cup his cheeks in your hands, lifting his head to look at you. Thumbs gently wiped at the tears, though more took their place until your fingers were soaked, fear filled eyes staring at you. You’d seen Ace in all sorts of states. Sure, you’d seen him happy and excited, but you’d also seen him enraged, hurt, saddened, hopeless, yet none of these compared to the vulnerability that you currently witnessed. His raw emotions bared to you, leaving not the strong, confident, happy Ace that everyone saw, but a sad, scared, lonely little boy desperate for love. He’d never looked so weak or defeated, never looked so small to you. Gently, slowly, you pulled him back in, treating him almost like a frightened animal who might bolt at the slightest provocation. The kiss wasn’t as deep, wasn’t as forceful or strong, but it was still just as passionate. The kiss was more gentle, soft, loving, and comforting, Ace’s arms slowly wrapping around your waist once more, holding you close, his grip tight but not crushing. He didn’t even realize how much faster the tears fell, desperation and fear morphing into cautious delight and even hope. While the kiss wasn’t as prolonged, it still had Ace internally hopeful, hopeful that maybe you felt the same way. Ace’s forehead rested against yours, his eyes closed as he took a shuddering breath.
“I… do… I mean…” Ace stumbled over his words, trying to figure out what he was trying to say.
“Take a deep breath Ace, it’s alright.” you whispered, taking a deep breath in and out with him, helping him calm his mind slightly.
“Y/n… I don’t want to ruin our friendship, I don’t want to lose you, but I… I can’t sit by and watch you and Sabo be so… close, I… do you think… maybe we could…” Ace’s sentence trailed off, but you didn’t need him to finish it, you knew what he was asking. You smiled, giving him another short peck on the lips.
“I think we should try. Just promise me that if it doesn’t work, we can still be friends, and next time, just tell me how you’re feeling.” you said with a soft smile.
“I promise.” Ace said, “though I guess this means you aren’t my best friend anymore.” Ace teased.
“I’ll always be your best friend, just like you’ll always be my best friend.” you said with a giggle. Ace smiled and laughed, happier than he had been in weeks, all the weight lifted from his shoulders as he picked you up and sat you back on the swing, repeating what you’d been doing with Sabo a short while earlier, but with larger smiles from both of you. Your relationship would be different now, but you’d always and forever be his best friend.
a quiet day with a lost child makes you see ace—and viceversa—not just as pirates, but as something far more dangerous: a future worth protecting.
(before reading, decide your fate: read this as an everyone lives AU, or as a fragile calm before marineford for maximum angst)

“You are not doing this.”
You cross your arms and stare at Ace. Ace grins back, that lazy, stupid grin that always means yes, I am doing this.
“I already am,” he says “Look at him. He likes me.”
The kid in Ace’s arms grabs his necklace and almost chokes him.
“Hey— hey— okay, easy!” Ace laughs, trying to pull back “See? Strong grip. He’s gonna be scary.”
You sigh “I can’t believe this.”
Just this morning, you wake up thinking it’s going to be a normal day. Eat, train, fight someone, maybe annoy Marco. Normal pirate stuff.
Now you’re standing on the deck of Whitebeard’s ship with a random kid between you and Ace.
“For one day.” you repeat slowly “Just one day. That’s what Pops said.”
Ace nods “Yeah, yeah. One day. Easy.”
You look at him “You said that when you stole food from the Marines.”
“That was easy.”
“You were chased for three hours.”
“But I didn’t die.”
The kid laughs loud.
Several heads turn.
Marco is the first one to walk over, hands in his pockets, eyes half closed “So,” he says, smiling “When were you two planning to tell us you have a kid, yoi?”
Ace laughs so hard he bends forward “He’s not ours!”
You almost choke “I’m pretty sure he knows that… idiot!”
Jozu looks at the kid, then at you, then at Ace “He has your hair.” he says, serious.
“And your eyes.” Thatch adds, appearing out of nowhere.
You feel your face burn “STOP SAYING STUPID THINGS.”
The kid suddenly reaches for your hand. His fingers are small and warm. He looks at you with wide eyes and smiles.
Your heart does something weird.
Ace notices. He goes quiet for a second.
Then he clears his throat “Okay, uh… so. Plan.”
You raise an eyebrow “You have a plan?”
“Rude. Yes. First, we don’t break him. Pops will kill us.”
“Good start.”
“Second,” Ace continues, “we keep him busy. Food, games, naps. While the others find the owner.”
“He’s not a dog…” You say and then look at the kid “He looks like trouble.”
Ace grins “Just like us.”
The kid suddenly lets go of you and runs. Straight toward the stairs.
“Oh no!” you say.
“Oh!” Ace replies laughing.
You both run after him at the same time.
“HEY!” you shout “Don’t run!”
“He’s fast!” Ace laughs “I like him!”
Crew members move out of the way, laughing and cheering.
“Bet on the kid!” Thatch yells.
“Don’t encourage him!” you snap.
The kid trips and you freeze.
Ace moves first, grabbing him before he hits the floor. The kid blinks, then laughs again.
Ace exhales “Okay. That scared me.”
You stare at him.
“What?” he asks.
“…Nothing.”
But your head already shows you something stupid. Ace holding a kid. Smiling. Careful.
You shake it away fast.
Nope. No. Bad thoughts.
Ace hands the kid back to you “Your turn.”
The kid clings to you without fear, like he trusts you.
Your chest feels tight.
Ace watches. His smile is soft now. Different.
He thinks, she looks natural.
You think, he would actually be a good dad.
Neither of you says anything.
The crew keeps laughing.
Later on, you walk slowly toward your dad’s place on the ship. The kid is on your hip now, holding your shirt like it’s his job. He’s calm.
Whitebeard looks down at you. Big smile. Sharp eyes.
“…I never thought I’d see you with a kid.” he says.
You laugh fast, too fast “Yeah, well— and you won’t. …I think.”
He raises an eyebrow “…You think?”
You stop. Your brain stops too.
Whitebeard leans back a little, arms crossed “One day with a random kid and you’re already thinking of making me a grandpa?”
Your face goes hot… really hot.
“W–WHAT? No! No, no, no!” you wave one hand while holding the kid with the other “I meant… I never thought of taking care of a random kid… like this—!”
You point at the kid like he’s proof of something.
Whitebeard laughs.
“Gurarara! Relax,” he says “I’m just joking.”
You breathe again.
Footsteps.
“Hey,” Ace says, walking over “Thatch told me you were here.”
He holds up some paper and colored sticks “I found these for the kid. So you can relax a bit.”
You blink “…Thanks.”
You nod, take them, and turn to leave.
But before you go, you look back at your dad.
He’s looking at you and Ace.
He’s smirking.
Your face burns even more.
“Stop that thought!” you say fast, turning away “Don’t look like that!”
You walk away quickly with the kid, almost running.
Behind you “Huh?” Ace says, confused “Stop what thought? What did I do? How did I look at her now?”
Whitebeard laughs again.
Ace scratches his head, then follows you “Hey! Wait!”
You don’t stop.
Your heart is too loud.
And your dad’s laugh follows you down the deck.
You sit on the floor with your back against the wall. The kid sits between you and Ace. Papers are spread everywhere. Colors roll around with the ship’s movement.
The kid holds a blue pencil.
He moves it up.
Down.
Up.
Down.
That’s it.
You draw random things. A sun. A sword. A weird-looking fish. You stop. You stare at the paper.
You look… bored. But also not bored. Just strange.
Ace looks at you from the side. He moves a little closer.
“…Are you mad?” he asks.
You blink and look at him “What? No, I’m not mad. Why are you asking?”
“Oh.” he relaxes a bit “You just look… weird?”
“Weird?”
“Yeah. You’re not even talking.”
“I am talking,” you say “Like right now.”
Ace squints at you, not convinced. He moves closer again, shoulder touching yours “You know what I mean. C’mon. What are you thinking about?”
You open your mouth.
You close it.
You look at the kid. Then back at your paper.
“…I mean,” you say, shrugging, “this kid can’t even talk or draw. He’s boring!”
Ace gasps. Loud. Dramatic.
He quickly covers the kid’s ears with both hands and leans close to you, whispering, “You can’t say that in front of him! You’ll offend him!”
You burst out laughing “Ace, he can’t even understand!”
Ace smirks “Stop! You’re a monster, Y/N…”
You laugh harder. Your shoulders shake.
Ace slowly uncovers the kid’s ears and sits back down, close to you.
“See?” he says softly “It’s better when you laugh.”
You look at him for a second. His face is relaxed. His eyes are warm.
Your heart does a stupid flip, and so, you panic.
“Let me see your drawing.” you say fast, changing the topic.
Ace lights up. No hesitation. He grabs his paper and holds it up proudly “It’s a portrait of you!”
You tilt your head “…That’s supposed to be me?”
“Yeah!” He nods like a proud kid “I got your vibes right.”
You look at the drawing.
It’s… bad. Very bad.
“Ace,” you say slowly, pointing at the kid, who is still moving the blue pencil up and down, “you draw worse than him.”
Ace freezes “…Hey!”
You laugh and try to pull your paper away.
“What about yours?” he asks “Let me see!”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
He suddenly drops his drawing and attacks you.
“HEY!” you laugh as his fingers dig into your sides “ACE— STOP!”
“Show me your drawing!” he laughs.
You try to escape. You fail.
The kid watches you both. Then, for the first time, he laughs too.
And that makes both you and Ace stop to admire him. Then Ace looks at you and suddenly hugs you and kisses you softly.
Later that day, Marco comes back with a woman. She looks tired but nervous. The moment she sees the kid, her eyes go wide.
“Oh!” she says.
She runs toward you.
Ace moves fast and steps in front of you without thinking, flames almost forming around his hand “Hey, stop right there.”
The woman freezes.
Marco puts a hand up “Easy, Ace. She’s here for the kid. She’s his mom.”
Ace doesn’t relax, not even a little.
He looks at Marco, sharp “How can we be sure? What if she’s an impostor?”
Some of the crew comes closer as voices rise and people whisper.
Then Izo speaks, calm as always “Just look at the kid’s reaction.”
Ace turns his head.
The kid is already reaching for the woman, smiling and aughing. No fear at all.
You gently hand him to her.
The kid is happy in his mom’s arms.
You smile at him.
Ace’s shoulders finally drop.
The kid looks back at you with a big smile as he lifts his little hand.
You wave back, soft and cute.
The woman bows a little “Thank you,” she says “All of you.”
She thanks the crew too. No tears. No long goodbyes. Just smiles and waving.
Marco helps her toward the ship’s edge.
Ace turns to you. You’re still watching them.
“…Are you okay?” he asks.
You nod, still looking “Yeah.”
Then your eyes widen “Oh.”
You suddenly run.
Ace blinks “Huh—?!”
You grab the kid’s drawing from earlier and sprint off the ship “WAIT!”
Ace stays where he is, watching.
He can’t hear you, but he sees you stop in front of the woman. He sees you smile softly. He sees you give her the paper.
The woman looks surprised. Then she smiles too and bow at you.
The kid waves at you again, but bigger this time.
You wave back.
Then you turn and walk onto the ship again.
Ace walks toward you “Why?”
You smile, holding your hands behind your back “I think that was the kid’s first drawing. And… I have a feeling that must be something important for… a mom.”
Ace goes quiet for like the first time in all his life.
You walk past him.
The crew gathers around Ace.
“Oi,” someone says “Stop daydreaming.”
Izo smiles a little “Aw. She would be a good mom.”
Ace snaps his head toward him “Yes, she would.”
Sharp. Fast.
Everyone freezes “…Huh?”
Ace doesn’t explain, he just turns and walks in the same direction you went, but his heart is louder than the sea.
Night falls slow on the ship. Lanterns glow warm. The sea is calm. The tables are full.
Food everywhere. Meat. Bread. Bottles. Too many bottles.
Whitebeard’s crew doesn’t need a reason to celebrate. They just do.
You sit between Thatch and Ace. Big mistake.
“Drink!” Thatch says, slamming a bottle in front of you.
“I already am.” you reply, lifting your cup.
Ace is already drunk. You can tell by the way he laughs too loud and leans too close.
“This food is amaaaazing,” he says “I love this crew.”
“You say that every time you’re drunk.” you say.
“But it’s always true!”
Someone starts singing. Someone else falls off a bench.
Normal night.
Then Thatch grins.
“Hey,” he says loudly “Remember the kid from today?”
You freeze.
Ace laughs loudly “Oh yeah!”
Thatch points at you with his bottle “You two were basically his parents for a day.”
You choke on your drink.
Ace pats your back way too hard “You okay?!”
“Yes!” you snap “STOP HITTING ME!”
The crew laughs.
Ace is laughing too, face red, eyes shiny “Did you see her? She was totally in mom mode!”
“I WAS NOT!”
“You were!” he insists “You fed him, protected him, waved at him like— like—”
He makes a soft waving motion with his hand and giggles.
Your face burns.
Someone else joins in “Honestly,” they say, “I think Y/N would surprisingly be a great mom.”
You groan and hide your face in your hands.
“But I don’t know about Ace,” another voice adds “He’s too much of an idiot!”
“HEY!” Ace protests “That’s rude!”
“It’s true!” Thatch laughs “He’d set the kid on fire by accident!”
“ON ACCIDENT?!” Ace yells “I would never— okay maybe…”
More laughter.
Marco takes a sip of his drink and smiles “Ace and Y/N’s kid?” he says calmly “That might be the government’s worst nightmare.”
The table explodes.
“HAH!”
“They’d cry!”
“The Marines would quit!”
“And Whitebeard as a grandpa?!”
You sink lower and lower in your seat.
Ace stops laughing.
You feel it before you see it.
You look up.
Ace is staring at you.
Not joking. Not laughing.
Soft.
Warm.
Like the whole noise around you just… disappears.
Your chest tightens.
You meet his eyes and for a second you really think you might faint.
He smiles. Small. Almost shy.
Your heart goes crazy.
You quickly look away “I— I need air.”
You stand up fast and walk away.
Ace watches you go.
The crew notices.
“…What was that?” Thatch asks.
Ace doesn’t answer. He finishes his drink, stands up, and follows you.
And for once, he’s not laughing.
The night air is cold. The sea moves slow and dark under the moon.
You hear footsteps.
Ace doesn’t wait “I want a baby now.”
You snap your head toward him so fast it almost hurts.
“…Why do you look serious?” you ask, half laughing, half scared.
He walks closer. Then stops just one step away.
“Because,” he says quietly, “for once, I am.”
That makes your heart drop.
“Ace…” you breathe out and turn your back to him. You sit down, knees pulled close, eyes on the sea “We never even thought about this.”
You swallow “We never talked about it. I was sure you never wanted kids. Because of your story. And because of our lives as pirates.”
You wait.
Ace sits next to you close, but not touching. He looks at you, not the sea.
“It’s true,” he says “everything you said is true.”
You feel his shoulder brush yours.
“But I have to admit something,” he continues “seeing you with that kid today… it made me think about it.”
You turn your head a little.
“I surprised myself too,” he says with a small laugh “But the thought of having a family with you? It makes me really happy.”
Your chest tightens.
He adds fast, “If you don’t want to, I’ll accept it. I’m happy with you now. I love you.” then, softer “I just want you to think about it. Only if you want to.”
You don’t think.
You turn and hug him.
Hard.
“But… it scares me.” you whisper.
Ace wraps his arms around you right away. Strong. Warm. Safe.
“I know…” he says, kissing the top of your head.
You stay like that for a moment.
Then you pull back just enough to look at him. Still in his arms.
“…Today made me think about it too,” you admit “and I disagree with the crew when they say you’d be a bad dad.”
Ace pouts dramatically “Hey. No one called me bad!”
You laugh softly but it fades. You look down at your hands “But Ace… it’s true what Marco said. The future we’re dreaming of right now is the government’s worst nightmare.”
You look back at him “You. Son of the Pirate King. Commander of the strongest crew. Brother of the man they’re terrified of right now.”
You swallow again “And me. Whitebeard’s daughter. Another commander of the strongest crew.”
Your voice shakes “They wouldn’t just hunt us. They’d hunt the kid too. Our kid, Ace.”
Your eyes burn “What if I can’t protect that future?”
Ace doesn’t answer right away.
He pulls you closer and for the first time tonight, the sea feels very far away.
He rests his forehead against yours. His voice is low. Serious. No jokes this time.
“Then we protect it together.”
You close your eyes “Ace…”
“I know,” he says quickly “I know it’s dangerous. I know the world is cruel. I know the government would never leave us alone.”
He pulls back just enough to look at you “But I also know this,” he continues “No one messes with what’s mine. And no one messes with what’s yours.”
Your breath shakes.
“And if one day,” he adds softly, “we decide to bring someone into this world… then they won’t just have us.”
You look at him, confused.
“They’d have the strongest crew on the sea,” he says with a small smile “They’d have uncles who’d die laughing for them. They’d have a grandfather who scares the world just by breathing.”
Your eyes start shining as he continues “And they’d have parents who would burn the whole ocean before letting anyone touch them.”
Silence falls.
The kind that feels full, not empty.
“…You really thought about this.” you whisper.
Ace exhales “Yeah. And that’s what scares me.”
You smile sadly “You’re not scared of fights. Or Marines. Or death.”
“Nope.”
“But this?” you gesture between you two “This scares you.”
He nods “Because I don’t want to lose it.”
Your chest hurts.
You lean into him again.
“…I don’t know if I’m ready,” you admit “Not now. Not yet.”
Ace doesn’t flinch.
“But,” you continue, heart pounding, “I don’t hate the idea.”
He smiles.
“That’s enough,” he says “That’s more than enough.”
You rest your head on his shoulder.
The ship creaks. The waves move. Somewhere, the crew is still laughing.
After a while, Ace speaks again.
“…If we ever have a kid,” he says casually, “I’m teaching them how to punch first.”
You pull back “Absolutely not.”
“Hey!”
“They’re learning how to think first.”
“That’s boring!”
You laugh. Fully this time.
Ace laughs too.
And for a moment the future doesn’t feel like a nightmare at all.
It feels warm.
Like something worth protecting.
