Cleaning the Dishes

"In the run-up to the opening of the Last Supper in Pompeii exhibition, Ashmolean object conservators engaged in a ground-breaking project to conserve 37 extraordinary objects. The objects have never been exhibited before and remain largely in their excavated state, with corrosion and fragments of ash and pumice from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 still encrusted on their surfaces."

Bone Plaque from York, England dated between 866 - 1000 CE on display at the Yorkshire Museum in York, England

This is thought to be one of the few examples of how the Viking settlers in England saw themselves. If this is so it is an image of a people that has so often been changed through out the centuries due to romanticism or nationalism.

FIFA World Cup

Are you ready for the England v Tunisia #WorldCup game today?

Whilst we don't have any footballs in our collections, we do have these carved stone balls from the Late Neolithic Period in Britain (3000–2500 BC). Hundreds of these were found in the north-east of Scotland, with these samples coming from Marnoch near Aberdeen.

It is not certain what these balls were used for, though there are many existing theories. Some believe they were used as weapons, while others suggest they might have been oracle balls used to interpret messages from the gods. Either way, we're not sure we'd want to play football with one.

The Bible’s Reliability, ANE Cosmology, The Name of God & Jesus
